'Lady Bird' Picked Up by A24
By Spencer Coile
After stellar performances in Greenberg, Frances Ha, Mistress America, 20th Century Women, and countless indies in the past decade, it was only a matter of time before Greta Gerwig got behind the directorial seat. Her debut film, Lady Bird, the story of a Sacramento teenager (Saoirse Ronan) who prepares to go to college in New York City has officially been picked up by A24 and is looking at a fall release. Co-written with frequent collaborator Noah Baumbach, Lady Bird also features Laurie Metcalf, Lucas Hedges, and Tracy Letts.
With any luck, Gerwig's debut will begin generating Oscar buzz already -- A24 has seen some great success in the past few years (one notable example being 20th Century Women and recent Best Picture winner, Moonlight). And although it is too soon to call the film's Oscar chances, one thought remains abdundantly clear: Greta Gerwig's career is at a steady trajectory, and we are just lucky enough to be witnessing it firsthand.

It could be said a24 fucked up 20th Cent chances once Moonlight became a thing. It was obv they could only handle one movie a year for awards. And this year they already have The Florida Project.
I really wanted her to win Supporting Actress for 20THCW,the role was a quirk but she layered it.
Thank God How I met Your Mother with a female protagonist got pluged!
She was robbed of an Oscar nomination for 20th Century Women
Wonder what extent Metcalf's role will showcase her. She's been brilliant for long on both tv and stage (her Tony was TOTALLY deserved, I don't care what anyone says) but other than her pre-Roseanne bit in Desperately Seeking Susan, I don't think she's ever been in a movie for anything other than a cameo.
Laurie Metcalf was the madcap neighbor in Uncle Buck and co-starred in one of those disposable mid-'90s "thrillers" (Blink, with Madeline Stowe).
I don't see how anyone could call 20th Century Women a "great success" for A24; A24 fucked up 20th Century Women's release royally by unceremoniously dumping it into only a handful of theaters at the very last minute last year vs. platforming it immediately after its NYFF premiere. 20th Century Women *should've* (and could've) been a "great success" had it had a better distributor with more TLC to spare. Hope that ignominious fate doesn't befall Lady Bird, too.
Laurie Metcalf had a huge role in Scream 2 lol.
Her film Saoirse Roan made a big impression on me. I saw myself in many ways, although I left New York for college in California in San Diego.
She has really amazing roles in films, with roles ranging from student comedies to drama films and action films. I'm currently in art college and hope to create effects for films like this in the future. I was writing my student essay, click to read, about the comparison of filming documentaries and feature films versus plot preparation, actors, script complexity. I hope that more documentaries will win academy awards, because many students start their work with such films and this is important for their development.
