I didn't realize until recently that she was Brenda on 227. Time really is flying.
Ignore SAG. She's winning the Oscar.
I'm not a religious person but she feels like a blessing in my screen (big or small).
A King born to be Queen
I'm glad you all love her now, but where were you when American Crime needed you?
@Nathaniel R
You continue to insist the central love story of Beale Street didn't work for you. But you never mention your response to the lovebirds' performances. Was their acting a problem in convincing you they loved each other? Kiki Layne and Dave Franco gave the weakest performances of the cast. And since she's our lead it was difficult to not to cringe at her initial line readings for the voice over.
I realize you didn’t ask me, 3rtful, but I enjoyed thinking about my answer to the question you posed to Nathaniel. Stephan James’ acting really killed the central story for me in IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK. (His performance also weakened HOMECOMING’s impact for me.) I find him very handsome and interesting looking, and his career is exploding, but he has this very actorly way about him that makes me feel like I’m watching a scene study in drama school, especially when his characters recall memories, which occurs in both BEALE and HOMECOMING. His performance did not rise to the material for me.
@Ryan Crowe
I didn't have a problem with James' performance. He was right on material but didn't transcend nor transform which is perfectly suitable for a movie that lives and dies off what the director is doing.
Regal Regina should already have an Oscar for not laughing at Janet Jackson when Janet confronted her character about her drinking problem in POETIC JUSTICE. (I say this as the biggest, most rabid Janet stan I know!)
I *just* realized that Regina = queen, so the fact that her name is Queen King is so apt, it blows my mind.
Nathaniel- where is your Mary Poppins Returns review?
I want Regina to win an Oscar someday. She is fantastic as always! I'm a film lover & I'm not in the industry (I'm a doctor) - my parents are Academy members and their friends are too. It's a weird insular group. That said, I know a lot of them, famous and not, and i don't think Beal Street will resonate. But I obviously could be wrong :)
** let me know if you need an LA correspondent .. would be interested in writing for you!
The fact that she missed at SAG makes me feel she's gonna have to take a backseat to Amy Adam's overdue win, whether it's fair or not. But bless Regina King for being incredible.
There are a lot of people who really hate Vice. And almost everyone likes Beale Street. Will the liberal Academy voters reward Amy for playing this character? I still think Regina is the front runner.
Ellsworth -- please email me at filmexperience (at) gmail (dot) com
brookesboy -- i do too
jamie -i'm slow. i've seen it twice though so i need to get on that.
mareko -isn't that crazy. I knew that Regina meant Queen but I never made the Queen King connection until now either. haha
Ellsworth, is a couple of months someday enough for you? :)
