Parasite's loot and other Palme d'Or winner returns

Let's marvel again at the success of Parasite in US release, but this time in the context of Palme d'Or winners. Parasite is just one notch away from being the 10 highest grossing Cannes winner of all time (at least as far as contemporary box office reporting goes). It's already the most successful Palme d'Or winner of all time among the non-English language winners.

Box office figures aren't readily available before the 1970s so we started in 1970 -- there are a few winners since then with no US box office results which means they either weren't ever released in the US or were somehow not reported. It's also worth noting that these numbers are not adjusted for inflation so we're assuming that either MASH or Apocalypse Now which bookended the 1970s would actually top the list as the highest grossing Palme d'Or winner ever. Figures are only domestic (USA) totals.

I'm excited for "Parasite" doing so well; it's something anyone can watch and become completely engrossed in, it's just hard to recommend to people b/c really I don't want to tell them anything about it. All I knew when I went it was 1. Bong Joon-Ho, 2. commentary on class - and it was such a delight to watch it unfold. I need to go see it again.

Thanks for the comparison chart of films that won the Palme d'Or and the Oscar.

"2000 Dander in the Dark >>> Gladiator"

I know it's just a typo, but can someone PLEASE film "Dander in the Dark" soon?

I'm picturing a feline horror movie in which a mangy over-sized cat with serious dermatological condition crosses paths with a lovely swan, played by Bjork. The swan suffers from a degenerative eye condition and mistakenly believes that the avalanche of dander that emanates from the cat is snow, reminding her of the carefree life she led as an ugly duckling in Iceland before she was exiled for being a capitalist sympathizer. The cat and the swan dance a pas de deux in a blizzard of white flakes, during which the cat inadvertently crushes the swan. The cat mistakenly believes that the swan's caterwauling is a love ballad and fails to recognize the death rants. The cat is then arrested and sent to the gallows. Eight sequels follow, but none of them ever manages to top the succès d'estime of the original (although the 6th installment, Catville, did manage to win the Oscar for best picture).

It's still astonishing to me that a non-concert documentary made over $100 million at the box office.

I Daniel Blake (2016) $260k

Poor Ken Loach. His movies r such a masterpieces, Ppl should see more of them. But in a world of Trump, Brexit, I should aim my expectations down.
