FYC: Keke Palmer as Oscar Host

by Murtada Elfadl

Hear me out. I’m on record on the podcast liking last year’s hostless ceremony and wanting that to continue. However that was before I saw Hustlers. Now is a different time.

The Academy recently announced that the 2020 ceremony will be produced by Stephanie Allain (Hustle & Flow, Beyond the Lights) and Lynette Howell Taylor (A Star is Born) and of course the media started speculating about whether or not they’ll bring back a host. They haven’t divulged any of their plans yet but the usual lists of who should host have started appearing everywhere. And it’s the usual suspects (Ellen, Kimmel, The Rock). Sorry to these suggestions, we can do better than that...

My suggestion is Palmer for a myriad of very good reasons:

  • She’s a gifted physical comedian, watch her running away at the hospital entrance after a mishap with a mark in Hustlers and you’ll know this to be true. Let’s make this the Oscar ceremony that has a couple of pratfalls

  • If she can be funny and unadorned in a meme, imagine what she can do with more time on our TVs

  • She hosts the 3rd hour of Good Morning America so she has the experience for the job

  • She has released 2 studio albums so we can imagine a fantastic and well sung opening number

Who do you think should host the Oscars? Or should they remain hostless?

Yes yes yes, this is all I want. The gag is, she's been bringing it for years!

but only if she reenacts her 'Sorry to this man' meme with the Kombucha girl.

I'd rather they stayed hostless, but I'm all in for Keke if they don't!

Sounds good to me. Til it happens, though, I'm sticking with Queen Latifah (why never her?), Sandra Bullock or both.

I hate to say it. I hope I don't sound ridiculous. I don't know who this woman is. I mean, she could be walking down the street, I wouldn't...I wouldn't know a thing. Sorry to this woman.

I still haven’t watched Hustlers yet and I hate myself for it.

Keep hostless, Oscars!

YAS PLEASE.

KEKE [sits next to Joaquin after he loses Best Actor]: Sorry to this man.

Lmao Volvagia, you win this thread!

She’d be a GREAT choice!

If not her: Cher, Lisa Kudrow, Wanda Sykes, Bianca del Río.

Or just bring Whoopi back!

Of the former hosts you mention, I do think that Ellen was excellent both times she did it - she was warm, very witty, an industry insider and someone who could make the TV audience feel included - and it has baffled me why she hasn't done it more often. Have the Academy not asked her again or has she turned it down?

But yes, Keke Palmer could get the gig!

Maya Rudolph and Martin Short together.

November 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRami

I want Ellen DeGeneres to host and George W. Bush to present Best Picture. God Bless!

November 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDaya

Ellen DeGeneres to host, George W. Bush to present Best Picture and Colin Powell to present Best Directing. Perfect!

November 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPollyanna

and I want Meryl to present Best Picture dressed with the American flag that she wore to the Hillary Charade.

Hosting Oscar night comes with unfair industry and audience critique. Palmer deserves better than to have her entire personhood questioned for a still very white and self-important institution like the Academy Awards.

McDormand should host since the opportunity to announce O-livi-a Col-man again with the same you have cancer candor can transpire again.

No thank you.

Seriously, no thank you.

Someone who is actually funny.

Tweet this to ABC! I wanted no host, but this is actually a good choice.

I'm with thefilmjunkie...hostless is fine for me. But Keke would be amazing and I'd love it. Truly a meme-tastic time

November 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

My dream would be for the host to know oscar & film history, find joy in the industry, while also knowing their audience - but above all, having wit & be a master emcee. They don't have to be a comedian, in my opinion. No disrespect to Keke, but someone like Emma Thompson would be perfect. I could care less about what she could do with a meme. Just celebrate the film year and not make it about ego!

November 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEllsworth

Ellsworth making sense.

November 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

The 'sorry to this man' meme just made me sad and I now fully support Katey Rich's "no performance by a child good enough to justify child actors" stance . How does a 26 year old not know who Dick Cheney is?

Want to see The Muppets host the Oscars at least once in my lifetime. I think the musical numbers would be amazing/hilarious. And because there's so many of them, even if you hate one, there's bound to be at least one you look forward to (I'd mostly look forward to Statler and Waldorf) ... as opposed to one host - if you hate them, you're stuck. Other than that... Rami's suggestion of Maya Rudolph and Martin Short appeals to me in ways I never thought it would! That'd be my 2nd choice.
