Finally, some options at the movie theater!

What did you see over the weekend? I saw four movies - a fun weekend. FINALLY. It's always better when multiple options of quality arrive instead of every distributor clearing the way for some preordained lame Disney blockbuster.

The charts and a few notes are after the jump...

numbers on that chart are pulled from boxofficemojo.

NEW WIDE RELEASES Godzilla King of Monsters was the champ this weekend, coming in at $47.7 million but that number comes with a bummer of a caveat. The fantastic 2014 monster movie opened at $93 and its sorta sequel Kong Skull Island opened at $61 and now this one at $47? It doesn't bode well for Godzilla vs Kong next spring given the depreciating returns unless that big monster match up reignites audience enthusiam.

Ma had a great weekend given its very low budget so it'll be profitable in no time (horror remains the safest genre always for turning a profit).

It's too soon to tell how successful Rocketman will be. It opened at about half the size of Bohemian Rhapsody, domestically speaking, so whether or not it is a big hit will depend on whether or not it has legs throughout the summer.

NEW LIMITED RELEASES Pretty quiet weekend for the arthouses with no significant openings, though Biggest Little Farm and Souvenir continue to expand. Next weekend should be big at the arthouses, though: Late Night, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, the Matt Bomer comedy Papi Chulo, 2 documentaries, and 2 South Korean movies are all opening in select cities. When it rains it pours.

Loved "Rocketman". Colorful, splashy, chock full of hits. and much more Gay Positive than BoRhap. Taran nails it. Hopefully he too will shine with Oscar.

"Brightburn" has some gross ways to die, and Daddy Bear David Denham keeps way too many clothes on. The kid has one look for the entire film. Save it for a rainy Saturday night.

Saw Godzilla and LOVED IT!

Saw ALADDIN and didn't hate it - diverting and fun, if not great. Looking forward to ROCKETMAN.

After a long post-Oscars break, I was also ready to catch up with some late-year films I missed while prioritising nominees: SUSPIRIA (a head trip), FREE SOLO (amazing) and A SIMPLE FAVOUR (twisty actressexual fun).

The Sydney Film Festival starts this week and I am looking forward to seeing a bunch of films including: PAIN AND GLORY, BACURAU, PARASITE, LES MISERABLES and THE DEAD DON'T DIE, all from Cannes; plus THE SOUVENIR, APOLLO 11, NEVER LOOK AWAY, BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHON and some Australian films, PALM BEACH and DANGER CLOSE. Plus whatever else I can fit in!

Saw Ma this weekend disappointed it wasn't better.

Saw MA with an amazingly receptive and raucous crowd. Definitely added to the experience! I also saw ROCKETMAN which was simply exquisite. Hope it has a long life in theaters so people can discover it.

Pleased that ALADDIN held well in its 2nd wknd as most MD openers don't. Disney now has the top 3 highest grossing movies of the year.

I saw "Gozdilla King of the Monsters" which is good when the monsters are center stage but drags when ever the broken family melodrama takes over
