P.S. I'm off to read "The Brick Foxhole"

by Nathaniel R

We hope you loved listening to the Smackdown Podcast and discussing various 1947 movies this month. It means a lot when you watch, vote, listen, and share these events. Another round of applause to our returning guests Dana Delany (she previously guest-starred on "1973"), Angelica Jade Bastién (she previously guest-starred on "1941"), and the newbies, actor Patrick Vaill (Netflix's upcoming Dash & Lily) and lyricist Tom Mizer (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel S3). Dana wanted to send a note to listeners that she was sorry for accrediting the direction of To Kill a Mockingbird to Richard Brooks rather than Robert Mulligan... the names just got jumbled because it was Richard Brooks who wrote "The Brick Foxhole" which she was also discussing.

I was so into this conversation that now I have ordered a copy of "The Brick Foxhole" to understand Crossfire in a fully homosexual way. I didn't know until the panel educated me that the movie changed the issue from Homophobia to Anti-Semitism!

Up next in our supersized Smackdown summer: "2002" on Wednesday June 17th  -- Chicago, The Hours, Adaptation, About Schmidt -- and "1957" on July 6th, so queue up Peyton Place, Witness for the Prosecution, Sayonara, and The Bachelor Party.

I'm intrigued by the book as well. It's going to have to wait a while though. I've sworn off buying new books, with eight 6 ft. bookcases packed to bursting with books I just can't bring myself to part with there just is no more room!

I can't stand to read on Kindle either, I like to hold the book, feel it's weight in my hands and stick a bookmark in it to be returned to when I'm ready. I know I'm in the minority on this but it's a personal idiosyncrasy.

So I normally rely on the library, a fantastic resource that I think people don't appreciate enough. Mine's great they can get me pretty much anything. But of course it's closed right now. Thank heavens for Goodreads so I can make it To Read and pick it up when it reopens.

The characters in the movie are vivid and distinctive it will be interesting to see how close they stayed to the ones in the book.

I couldn’t find that book anywhere! Except for a few super expensive copies on eBay.

Bradley - yeah, had to buy on kindle. I prefer paperbacks but what can you do.

Nathaniel - As usual, you're a genius. You're all geniuses! I'm in the middle of it now! I don't love Kindle reading either. But it was the easiest way to get it stat.

The Brick Foxhole does sound like a fun bar to get drinks at after the world calms down a bit lol

I've found kindle e-books have been quite handy in the past for finding the big old noir novels when in a pinch.

i treasured my vhs version of 'foxhole' in the early 1990s; such a stirring tale of male camaraderie in stressful times...

Thanks for the podcast. I knew about The Brick Foxhole in college when I became friends with the founder of a local book club. Then I decided to write about this book and dreamed of directing a play based on it. The work took me a long time, and my original version was not what I wanted. So I decided to proofread my essay with https://edubirdie.com/proofreading-services to improve it with the help of professionals. My first performance in front of friends in a book club turned out to be successful, and in the future, I will write more than once about my favorite books. Unfortunately, I have been unable yet to translate my works into a script for a film or a play, but I hope everything is still ahead.
