First & Last 023

Can you guess the movie from its first and last shot?

The answer is after the jump...

The answer is right in the first shot as Renfield (2023) is wearing a name tag! The framing device and recurring gag is that Renfield, servant of Dracula,  is attending a support group for co-dependents. Though this comedy wasn't particularly well received with a 58% critics and 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, I had a great time with my best friend watching this. Yes, it's silly/dumb but on purpose. Clever dumb with some standout elements like inspired makeup and costume work. And Nicolas Cage was goofy fun as Dracula. Finally we never feel annoyed when we're asked to stare at Nicholas Hoult for 90 minutes. Who does? It's currently streaming on Peacock but if you want to recreate our fun experience in the theater, perhaps knock back a drink or two first before hitting play. No judgments.

Hoult was great, but as much as I adore Awkwafina, she (and her whole dad plot thing) really wasn't needed. And Cage wasn't nearly in much of the movie--which some would say is a perfect amount of Cage--but I think we needed more Hoult/Cage interaction AND more camp.
