Red Carpet: Matchy-Matchy, Swans & Sweet Revenge

Previously: SAG live blog and SAG screen shots.

Final SAG Post!
Aren't you relieved? When people say the verb "sag" do you think automatically think of unionized actors? Glam Overload especially after that Vanity Fair cover. But we can't wrap up SAG discussions without a quick fashion run-through, can we? It wouldn't be right. I'm dying to talk about actual movies again. Funny how movie awards season shoves the movies into the background. Must watch some actual movies that don't have awards on their mind this week so that we can better appreciate all the sleek beauties and shiny gowns again by BAFTA & Oscar time.

Amber Riley, Paz de la Huerta, Angie Harmon, Throwback Goddess

Too Matchy-Matchy
Let's start with the TV girls because we never do and this was their last chance in the season to shine. This group is way too frustrating. I didn't know that Amber Riley (Glee) was rooming with Julia Stiles. How else to explain this saloon girl in mourning gown that we just saw at the Globes. Angie Harmon is wearing something that's very suspiciously Penélope Cruzesque and if you're not Penélope... Christina Hendricks remains a goddess but I don't know what to make of this.

Paz de la Huerta from Boardwalk Empire... matching lips with dress? Must she? Is that ever a good idea outside of maybe classic reds and even then. A little bit of red goes a long way. Aren't you glad other actresses didn't do this?

BEST DRESSED (TV Division)
Cara Buono (Mad Men), Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Edie Falco (Edie Falco!), Juliana Margulies (The Good Wife), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)

The Pretty. The Unexpected. The Vivid. The Classy. The Va Va VoomLove that Bowen managed to pull off pants at a glam event; risky means big pay off if it works. When Modern Family first started I worried that Julie Bowen would have the boring "straight man" role among comediennes but...

(more after the jump including Best Dressed and the Black Swan girls)

she gets funnier and funnier, doesn't she? That show is bliss. Anyway... though this wasn't exactly a banner year for gowns don't you think they all look yummy?

BLACK SWANS
Appropriately doppelgangerish trivia about Noni, Mila & Natalie -- they're all 5'3". The casting on that movie was too superb.

Beth, Erica, Lily, Nina

Breaking News: Natalie and Benjamin will be placing Winona Ryder on the top of their wedding cake as decor. She's ready to go!

I actually l-o-v-e Barbara Hershey's dress. Anyone with me?

MORE LADIES. STAY WITH US..

Adams, Danes, Swank, Sarandon, MaraI just realized that I placed Claire Danes with the movie people instead of the TV people. Perhaps post-Temple Grandin and considering her all-time classic debut in My So Called Life I should shift my head to the small screen division. Amy Adams, Hilary Swank, Susan Sarandon all looked nice but "safe" but I have no comments. Do you?

Regarding Kate Mara: I always forget she exists until I see her. It's not purposeful. Any fans out there? I understand she can sing. That's a sure way to win us* over. Bring it, Kate.

*I'm pretending all of you share my singing actor obsession. Just go with it.

Lawrence, Kidman, HBC, Best Supporting Actress

I heard some of the red carpet talking heads complaining about Jennifer Lawrence's black belt but that hot pink sure is eye-catching. It probably needed the black so as not to temporarily blow out your retinal rods and cones (pssst. the winged eyeshadow was really cool, right?). Nicole Kidman usually makes best dressed lists but the top of that dress is just too busy. As is the back which is not shown here. Why can't jpegs be 3D and 360˚?  James Cameron, get on that, won't you?!?

Melissa Leo. Tell me how to feel. I'm not sure.

P.S. Did you read this great piece on Melissa Leo by Sheila O'Malley?

FINALLY.... BEST DRESSED

Mila, The Bening, Julia Stiles, Robin Wright, Hailee Steinfeld

This is the best Mila Kunis has ever looked. It's like her revenge on the Academy's Acting Branch for the snub. She's on fire (figuratively and visually). The Bening reminds everyone that she's a shimmering angel sent to us by Our Heavenly Auteur. Julia Stiles gown looked like it had its own spotlight. Hypnotic so I felt generous. But I guess she should be in the TV grouping, too. I'm tired. Leave me be. Robin Wright, looking sensational, is also getting sweet revenge. Isn't looking great after a breakup supposed to be the best revenge? Did you see her huge smiles on the runway, too... what's going on? I'm suddenly interested in The Conspirator all over again even though she won't be looking like this in that Lincoln assassination drama. (Unless Robert Redford has suddenly gone avant garde and anachronistic as a director.) Finally, Hailee Steinfeld does it again. Only a kid could pull of this dress but it's so perfect for her and for SAG. She's a child prodigy at dressing for awards shows. Only one big test left. If she wows at the Oscars, she wins Most Consisently Best But Also Varied For the Season doesn't she? How is this even possible?

Whew. Aren't you glad SAG is over?  NEXT

Who was your best and worst dressed?

Mila Kunis was great, but I've got to go with Claire Danes.

I was like "You tell 'em, Mila!" with that outfit, even though I didn't mind the snub.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

I love Danes, Kunis, and Vergara. Margulies, Stiles, Adams, and (I'm afraid to admit it on this blog) Swank get honorable mention.

I am not digging Steinfeld's attire at this awards show-- girly is okay if you're young, but ugly is not. And orange and pink together = ugly.

Jennifer Lawrence is blinding me with that color, as is Falco, and I have no idea what Buono or Mara are going for (too many frills and mermaid-like, respectively). Worst, of course, is Paz de la Huerta. I imagine that's something Lily Munster might have worn.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

I had to keep reminding myself that she's used to look lively and real and her name is Paz de la Huerta, because that girl with brown lips didn't look like either of the three.

And Natalie looks huge for someone who's due in summer.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJenn

I'm obsessed with the Jennifer Lawrence gown-I think she looks amazing. Kunis is better, but Lawrence is a close second.

But where are the men?!?

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

On that "I have someone else in mind" I choose Dominic West (of Best Show Ever The Wire) as "in need of ascension." Even if it's not on the air, NO ONE thought he'd make a good lead in one of their movies once the show ended? Not even, oh, I don't know, Martin Scorsese, who should be ingesting anything like The Wire? (Dominic West's Chuck Aule v. Leo DiCaprio's Chuck Aule. Which sounds better?)

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

John T -- i was going to do one but curiously there were far fewer photos avialable of men then there usually are. It's like for this one event all photographers decided to only shoot the men from the chest or stomach up. And I like a consistency in visual approach so I had to boycott the penguins this time 'round. Sad face.

Marsha -- exactly.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel Rogers

I think Mila and Hailee have been the most consistently well-dressed.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

Bening.

That is all.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCagatay

I went with Jennifer Lawrence and Mila Kunis. Mila looked pitch-perfect and i have no idea why Jennifer's dress didn't go over as well as i thought i did. When i saw it on TV, i was like 'damn! A+ to her.' I also didn't mind Christina Hendricks. I don't know. I guess i'm on another wavelength then most people. Hell, i'm still on the fence with Nicole Kidman. There's a sort of disasterness to it, but it kind of works. Odd hair, but it works. What the heck is that necklace doing there, but it works.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDerreck

Naya Rivera had be on my knees.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJonathon

tina fey was easily the best of the tv women

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterpar3182

LOL Barbara's dress was horrendous, poor thing. It looked like globs of dirt (or something else...).

Just...no.

Best dressed for me were Mila Kunis, Hailee Steinfeld, January Jones, and Nicole Kidman (that back is STUNNING).

Robin Wright also looked amazing. That body is insane.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKD

Does Steinfeld have a stylist? Or is she truly—seemingly—a fashion savant?

And Robin Wright looked ah-mazing! Ditching that sourpuss ex or hers (who didn't even fucking *thank her* when he won his Oscar) has done wonders for her.

But for me Best Dressed was Bening, who looked so regal.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMark B.

I don't understand anything about fashion, but Steinfeld is A+. It's unusual, fresh, eye-catching but defintely not prematurely sexy. She understands what's elegant for her age without being conservative or overcooked. Perfect.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Hands down Mila takes this in her sexy, off-the-runway look. January Jones was a close one, too. In the case of Mariska Hargitay and Natalie Portman - both have done so much better, don't you think? A little disappointing for such beautiful ladies. And Amy Adams' dress should have been red or blue or something else bold but she looked beautiful regardless. (And Amy was signing autographs for fans in the bleachers - so cute!) Worst dressed is Paz de la Huerta...

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

I wish the seam that attached that bottom fabric to Hailee's calf-length dress weren't orange -- it calls too much attention to the engineering, and makes the shape look a little weirder. But yeah, she's totally nailing this.

Tina Fey looked terrific. I liked Nicole's willingness to be off-center, even though I feel her exuberance and risk-taking is making me a touch too kind to the dress. I really didn't mind it, but I would have on a lot of other people. Liked Danes's dress, but she lost me with that lipstick. I think Robin Wright has frequently looked this good, with less sense of overloading on tanning and on that which shall not me named (B***x). That's not what her brows usually do.

Whoever did that to Kate Mara, or let her do that to herself, needs reprimanding. Noni's rocking at least twice as much fabric as she should be. I haven't seen one second of Mad Men, and I'm sure Hendricks is great, but boy is she an albatross on the red carpet, every time. Not feeling the charisma. And we get it; put them away. I mean, at least occasionally.

Was Stiles my favorite? That's weird. Bowen runner-up. Competition was pretty weak.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNick Davis

(Okay, Robin's tan is not as pronounced as it was in a clearly bad picture that I saw first; her complexion looks great in all the others. But this is what makes me feel like not every part of her face is moving the way it usually does.)

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNick Davis

I didn't like Naya Rivera's look at first, but the more I look at it the more I like it. Heather Morris' look was perfect, too.

Paz de la Huerta, gah, that was awful.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSC

Mila Kunis and Hailee Steinfeld get my vote.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Where is January Jones? She was absolutely sensational in that Carolina Herrera black and gold gown.

February 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHardy

LOVE B.Hershey's dress. JUST LOVE IT! but here how it goes for me:

#1: Mila Kunis
#2 Annette Bening
#3 Barbara Hershey
#4 Julie Bowen
#5 Julia Stiles (and I don't even think she a good actress...but the dress is AWESOME!)

February 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

Im sorry (and I love her, I think she's an amazing actress) but Robin Wright look a little tight around the eyes ((& the mouth & the face in general...)I didn't even reconnized her...) it's sad when they feel the need to do THAT!...

February 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

oh! 1 last thing: Christina Hendricks looked GREAT! she as the kind of figure that look good in a Garbage Bag...& this is NO garbage bag: it's Classy, Simple, Clean...GREAT! (she as the class to let the other lady (try?) to look as sexy as she ALWAYS does on the red carpet!

February 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

Faves were Mila, Claire and Hailee. The others put me to sleep.

February 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Oh I also loved Jennifer Lawrence. And that was it.

February 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda
