Podcast: Meek's Cutoff, Early Cinephilia
In an effort to bring you more podcasts, I'm going to be switching up the guest lists, for a hopefully rotating panel. So for this week's podcast we have three first time guests: Kurt (Your Movie Buddy), Michael (Serious Film and Unsung Heroes) and Robert ("Distant Relatives") and yours truly, Nathaniel.
Topics include:
- Kelly Reichardt's invisible storytelling and Meek's Cutoff
- Is Michelle Williams America's Tilda Swinton?
- Robert Pattison and Water for Elephants
- Cinephilia: When did it begin for our guests? How do their significant others deal with their movie obsessiveness?
As always the conversation can include more voices. Join us in the comments.

I'm still with you on Water for Elephants, Nathaniel! I think it worked at what it was trying to be, a crowd-pleasing period romance on a budget. Ok, 40 mil isn't exactly indie, but I still remember being surprised how low it was after seeing it. It's a like not a love for me, but I can see how WFE is extremely easy to pick apart. It's one of those weird movies for me that comes along from time to time where I never actually meet or know anyone personally who dislikes it, yet find almost nothing but vitriol for it online.
I'm seeing "Meek's Cutoff" on Wednesday so I shall listen then.
Drew -- thank you. exactly. there are certain "targets" on the web and it's definitely one of them. i get exactly what Kurt and Michael are saying but i would be lying if i didn't say that it was a pleasant couple of hours for me despite the flaws. Maybe i just like elephants and horses and period art direction too much?
As much as I enjoy Katie, Glenn and Nick, I enjoyed hearing some new voices, Nat; nice to "mix things up" a bit.
Not to be cruel, bu when Michael talked about his S.O's enthusiasm and wondered if she didn't exagerrate it sometimes for his benefit, I couldn't help but think of the "orgasm" scene in "When Harry Met Sally". (Or more than a few far-less-funny moments in my own relationship.)
So much fun, this was. (Sorry to poo-poo on your "pleasant couple of hours"). Do I really say "Like" that much? I'm going to have to eradicate that usage before next time -- exorcise the Cher Horowitz out of me. :)
Kurtis -- This is the distressing thing about being on a podcast. you notice all the verbal tics. I still find it hard to deal with myself on "tape" ;)
Fun podcast!
Janice, I've never been on one of Nathaniel's podcasts :(
I can´t find these new podcasts on Itunes, the last one is from March 2010. Could you upload them, specially now that you seem to be trying to do them more regularly? And by the way, thanks for that initiative, love them and would like to listen to them more often.
Alfonso -- last time i checked iTunes had dumped my listing. It's very confusing to set up but i shall try again.
Ugh, this just makes me desperate to see Meek's Cutoff. My local arthouse cinema hasn't even gotten Certified Copy yet. Curses!
Nate, I second the plea for iTunes. Though I like keeping up with the bullet points in the summary above when reading. LOL.
Love the Before Sunset lovefest. Especially the bit about one of the significant others falling asleep and the partner raving about how amazing it was afterwards. I can't remember who said it. Either way, I've had this happen to me many times with my s.o.
Hopefully, we'll get a Cannes wrap-up/Tree of Life discussion episode near the end of the month? :D
It was being spastic Windows 7 Enterprise Key and sent me five different product keys Microsoft Office Standard - none work at all - do I have to unblock on my firewall and try Microsoft Office 2007 again - or reinstall the software?
