Another day, another several celebrities with new ad campaigns.  Here's Angelina Jolie for Louis Vitton (reportedly she's not wearing any makeup here and wearing her own clothes) and Tobey Maguire for Prada.

How many of them do you think make more money posing for ads than actually acting? Even the ones who command huge actorly paychecks.

oh yes... a few links

Self Styled Siren a fun post on romantic choices, "sleeve tuggers" and The Phantom of the Opera (1943)
Alt Screen celebrates Buster Keaton in College.
Men's Journal spends manly time with Kyle Chandler.
Cinema Blend a retro poster for Captain America: The First Avenger
Super Mercado a fan poster for "The Case" that movie within the movie Super 8

Off Cinema
The Daily Beast thorough critical rundown of new TV season. Pan Am with Christina Ricci sounds great and they say it's sexy, too.
Basket of Kisses roots for Mad Men hard at the inaugural "Critics Choice" for television.

8th Annual Naked Bike Ride. This looks like it would hurt. They do some naked bike riding in that Flemish movie The Misfortunates. Have any of you seen that? It's surprisingly affecting, despite being relentlessly sozzled and depressed.

Tony Aftermath
The ratings were up 10%. Yay!
BlogStage has video highlights of the Tonys. I added a couple of these to my live blog in case you're just joining us and want to catch up.
La Daily Musto takes off the blindfold on those Tony related "blind items"... this link is for theater obsessives only, though.

thought the Tonys were fine but this shirtless photo of Gene Kelly made her night.
Movie|Line thinks the Oscars should take after the Tony Awards. But some of this oft-heard advice is impossible: You can't get rid of the precursors. Oscar has no say in those. They'd have to collapse on their own. Plus, the technicals should not be cut (though maybe the "short film categories" could go without spoiling that it's a night about cinema. Still I like my Oscars long. But they do need to have more spirited presentation. HIRE NEIL PATRICK HARRIS & HUGH JACKMAN AS A DUO. (see also TFE's live blog for their wonder-twin-powered duet)

I'll never be able to get past Hugh Jackman's narcissism (it's fine for singing and dancing, but not so much hosting), though Neil Patrick Harris brings me joy every time I see him at an awards show - much more so than any awards given out on said shows.

Maybe I'm just biased though - maybe I feel this way only because NPH is openly gay, whereas Hugh Jackman, wherever he goes, feels compelled to hang the Mystery of the Wax Museum off his arm.

Louis Vitton needs a global face who is popular among young people in newly powerful countries like China, India and South America.
Jolie needs money. Her Bosnian movie took her time and her pocket money. She has no movie to star this year but needs $ 3-4mil for her charity every year.
Her MJP project in Canbodia is almost to finalize with total $10mil (10 years peoject)and the school and the clinic she founded in that area will need her money forever . Cambodi is one of poorest countries in Asia and the government cannot afford to do.
By the way, Nicole Kidman this year ad for Omega. Beautiful.
Last year she did an ad for a newly opened shopping mall in Brazil.

@sunny - Jolie "needs" money? That's laughable. I mean yes, she needs a continuous revenue stream like any person, but I bet if she stops working right now, she'll be JUST OKAY. She is after all with Brad Pitt and I'm sure her own savings are just north of holy.shit.that.is.a.lot.

every one knows Angie Jolie is born with natural smoky eyes and behind her, that looks alike a painted and i dislike the ads with celebrities.
In France,we can see Uma Thurman in 3 commercials(Schweppes, one for a car and one for a perfume) but i don't remember when i saw one of her movies .We see George Clooney in a commercial for Nessepresso or benicio Del Toro in an awful commercial for ice cream

i remember a story with Dicaprio:we can't see his commercial outside the original contry(many in Italia,China or Japon) yeah because he needs money

Just yesterday I was wondering when did A list actors become so ubiqutious everywhere? I was thinking about it in relation to the Tony thread (Barkin, McDormand, etc. I exempt Kathleen Turner, of course.). Movie stars are now in theater, advertising campaigns, television shows - what do you suppose happened to the models and actors in those media who can no longer find work? Save some for the fishes, A-listers! Do you really need the money and attention that bad?

I suppose it's a bit reflective of the general socio-economic trend in this country over the last 30 years: the 1% at the top of the pyramid keeping more of everything (goods, money, resources, laws written on their behalf), while the remaining 99% of us make due with less and less; and those at the top think it's only their due.

Ugh! I always find it soo insulting when somebody suggests that the Oscars may be better if they got rid of the technical awards. Why shouldn't a cinematographer/art director/costume designer have his/her moment under the sun just like any celebrity would? they work just as hard or harder and they don't enjoy the fat paychecks. I know that the technical awards don't have mass appeal, and they shouldn't. These are the Oscars not the "Most Famous Celebrity awards". They honor cinema and its craftmanship. If they gave me an Oscar for best art director during a commercial break, I would throw it out on the freeway!...

Good call on Uma Thurman. Scarlett Johansson is another one who *has* to make more money on her seems-like-every-fuckin'-season than her barely-there movie career (which was never Jolie- or Kidman-style lucrative anyway).

I do not believe for a second that Angelina is not wearing makeup in that photo.

I begin to think one day we'll find out Angelina's is an act, much like Joaquim Phoenix a few months ago, and that in fact she's been taping a documentary for years now. I don't buy the non-makeup either which makes me wonder what happened to those women who back in the 90s got that permanent makeup that was hip for two seconds.

Reading about the Tonys and watching videos, I'm absolutely mesmerized (?) by this one of Anything Goes

A-ma-zing what those people do. And if tap dancing gets you those thighs and asses, I'm ordering my tap dancing shoes right now.

Good lord, the Oscars happen once a year. I can't believe that people get so upset that they have to sit through a maximum ninety-second (which the Movieline artice even admits to) speech from the cinematographer. Really, people? Are you so that disturbed that the person onstage only works (*gasp*) behind the scenes? Are they not worthy of your valuable time?

And frankly, the tech and creative people usually keep their speeches much shorter and more gracious. If we should be cutting anyone's speeches because they're a waste of time, it should be the actors. They go at least twice as long as everyone else and usually just embarass themselves.

I agree! Technical awards are also important. Maybe if we all stop watching the precursors, they'll collapse sooner...

Janice - I would never describe Barkin and McDormand as Movie Stars. I wish they were but they're not.

Have you seen Frances mugshots? I think they're amazingly funny!

PS Why Leibovitz pics are now so fake and ugly?

Really? Slattery for his work this season? I don't know. But then, I've never really felt that big a pull towards MAD MEN. I actually prefer THE KILLING, even after the response to the season's second half.

RyanT, Jolie is too independent to depend on Pitt's earning. Every year she and Pitt donate exact same amount of money to their JP Foundation. Anne Hathaway depended too much on her ex-boyfriend's (fraud) money to start their foundation for children in developing countries. Hathaway was inspired by Jolie and wanted to do something like her. Jolie was equally young enough when she first started her charity in Cambodia but she was doing it all by her money. When I donated some money to her charity, UNHCR letter started to come to my home. I realized that she wanted me use money for UNHCR rather than her own project. Since then I donate money for UNHCR.

The Angelina-Louis Vuitton ad is beautiful, but she looks like she has eye make-up???

Speaking of Joaquin Phoenix - do I vaguely recall he was in a Prada ad many years ago???
