Best Actress "Character" Poll - Please Vote
THIS POST HAS BEEN UPDATED -- PLEASE REVOTE ON PT 2 IF YOU'VE PREVIOUSLY VOTED. POLL FIXED.
I have a cagey request. I am in the brainstorming part of an "in development" project that may or may not show up on this blog and I'm not ready to talk about it yet. So I can't tell you why but I would like ALL of you reading to vote (why are people so shy/lazy about clicking on anonymous polls?).
This poll is not about your favorite performances or actresses or who you think deserved to win (though that will sometimes be affected by the following... ). I'm just wondering... Which MOVIE CHARACTERS you think about the most from the past decade of the Best Actress category.
You are allowed multiple answers on this poll, but please choose no more than 5 characters in each poll.
PART 1 2001-2005
Part 2 2006-2010
THANK YOU FOR VOTING.

Nat -
The second poll won't let you choose more than one option. Just so ya know...
I was about to complain about the 2nd poll being buttons and not tickboxes, but it's already been pointed out!!
BRIDGET JONES!!!!
I have fixed the second poll. sorry about that. Please revote!
Am very intrigued by this, Nathaniel! Hope the thought bubble comes to fruition.
Satine and Clementine FTW.
Annette Bening as Nic has to be one of the most underrated Best Actress nominated performances in recent history.
{divide}
OT: Kathy Bates is officially apart of Woody Allen history being in the his biggest money loser Shadows and Fog and his biggest money making Midnight in Paris.
So excited for whatever this project turns into!
I probably reference Clementine / Miranda Priestly once every few days... and, just so everyone knows, screaming out "I'm the Swan Queen" works quite well in conversation-- I guess I must vote for Nina as well.
Interesting poll idea with interesting results, can't wait to see what this potential project is about.
I'll just say I had much harder time voting the second half of the decade than the first...
Peggy Sue -- is that because the characters haven't yet seeped into our lives or you just don't think the second half of the decade was as strong?
The second half is much better, indeed. Anyway, I just realized that I voted for all Winslet roles. She always picks the best roles.
Best role of the decade: Raimunda. She is strong, has her own life, has a dark past (rape, incest, family breakdown), gives all her love to her daughter and sister, has a golden heart, an incredibly sense of humor, is always astoinishingly and effortlessly sexy, and fights for her life and for happiness.
But maybe Raimunda is the best role because she had a lot of things going on inside her, but, you know, Hanna is a hulluva role, too, in the opposite direction. She is plain, simple-minded, has nothing else than basic emotions and then has to grow from her absolute nothingness.
(I've seen this performance again, and although I don't like the movie, it piss me off the people say Winlset didn't deserve the Oscar and that was only a make-up won. It's a great performance).
My favorite unnominated role is still Erika, in The Piano Teacher. best role and performance of the decade, or maybe the last two decades.
My clearly most idiosyncratic pick - Wendy Savage. Love that character, performance, movie.
Most idiosyncratic non-pick - Satine. I like her just fine (even if the rest of Moulin Rouge! irritated me more often than not), but there are about 5 other Kidman characters I think more about. Always wished she'd gotten the 2001 nomination for The Others.
With three performances, Judi Dench could still not beat Marion Cotillard with one nom percentages wise (so far).
Upon further review, I now believe Nicole Kidman may have a future in this business.
Surprisingly, though, the poll made me realize that I think about her real character Virginia Woolf more than I think about her imaginary one, Satine. And I think about the quiet, indominable strength of Ree more than I think about any of them, probably due to how recent the exposure was versus the other characters.
Even if nothing comes of the project-in-progress, do please let us know what you were considering. The curiosity will eat at me unmercifully until I know.
Hahahah Nathaniel, legitimately my first thought when looking at the second poll was "Oh! Where's Poppy from Happy-Go-Lucky? She'd always be my first choice, how come she's missing from this poll?" But then, ah yes. The great injustice.
The same can be said about Anna in Birth, who came immediately to mind before I sadly remembered that Nicole Kidman, for shame, wasn't even nominated for that performance.
i am a little surprised myself at the characters i think about a lot not always aligning with performances i deeply love if i were voting (i.e. zellweger and swank roles pretty persistent in memory for a complicated number of reasons)
No matter how much I LOVE Kidman in Birth, that nomination would be impossible. She would have to top herself fot that amazing performance in Dogville.
Not happy with selection.
Where is Beatrix Kiddo AKA Uma Thurman??!?!?!? Geez
Nathaniel, you forgot Tracy from Thirteen.
LOL :( I know I'll never let that go, but as you all are talking about roles you think about before realizing they weren't nominated, that's one of them. Evan Rachel Wood was just such a revelation...and I loved the movie a lot. And for her to be only 14 or 15 and be acting like that, it was just superb. Totally deserved an Oscar nod.
Also voted for all Winslet Performances...
Top 3:
Clementine
Satine
Nina Sayers
Great idea btw.
Philip -- agreed. and as for "beatrix" in Kill Bill as random12 complains about -- i would have given her the actual Oscar. But alas she was not nominated so therefore not eligible for this poll.
Miranda Priestly is easily the best invented character over the past decade. Flawless.
I ve been all day thinking about this poll!! LOVE the idea!! Maybe because I m always thinking about female film characters, this is amazing... I could be all my life thinking about Fiona s eyes, about Ree Dolly and how she is the modern Antigone, about all the life inside Raimunda, about Connie Summer (what an AMAZING character!!! People, vote for her it s an order!!), about Kym s wounds, she is such a beautiful person! it s sick of me to say this, but I love her. And of course, all the amazing gallery of Nics characters (to me, waaaay better than Winslets). Her Virginia Woolf obsesses me even more than the real writer, when her sister leaves the house... Im in love of those silent tears. And Nina... Oh my God, Nina, you are just perfect, words can´t express everything you make me feel. And from the day you were on your first screen you became an iconic cinema legend.
Thank you, Natahaniel for feeding my obsessions!! Really curious about this project, I would love to know your choices!! It also happens to me that I have performances that I don´t like in my mind for quite a long time (Blanchett´s Elizabeth 2, for example, but imitating her is so funny!)
Satine, Cathy, Vera, Clementine, Lizzie
Barbara, Miranda, Sarah, Nina, Jenny
I strongly disagree about Miranda. There's nothing special about the part - the whole credit goes to Streep's spectacular performance. She made an iconic character out of nothing.
I actually found the second half incredibly dull. I ended up voting for just three (I voted for all of Nic's parts, I find that her characters have been most indelible for me.)
