That's Hugh Jackman in character as Jean Valjean on the set of Les Misérables. The most epic musical made in some time hits the screen in just 268 days. Good luck to Tom Hooper and cast. Please let this be great. The stage show deserves it.

Considering Hugh Jackman's past experience of playing characters with amnesia, he could fulfil this role extremely well. I was looking for old stock footage of past Les Misrables movies. It will be interesting to see if Hugh Jackman can trump Liam Neeson's performance.

While I absolutely LOVED Liam Neeson as ValJean, it'll be exciting to see Jackman play this part, and i love the rest of the cast--since they got rid of TSwift, thank God. Can't wait for the movie!

If this is good, the Oscar is his.

I don't know... I think an actor in a musical has an uphill climb. The last one who won was Rex Harrison, and that was 1964. (Even Eddie Murphy couldn't break through in the supporting category, though that was due to other issues.) Note that Ewan McGregor couldn't get a nod for Moulin Rouge, for instance. Factor in the phenomenal season this year will be for leading man roles, and I doubt Jackman will have much of a chance, no matter how good the film is; AMPAS is more likely to award his female costars.

^ Yeah, and Richard Gere couldn't get a nod after winning the Golden Globe and getting a SAG nod.

I think Hugh has a chance though.

Is it bad that the first person I thought of when I saw him was Zach Galifianakis?

March 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

I dunno, its SUCH a baity role for Hugh, and he is so talented I think he has a great shot. The songs are excellent, and he did host the show in 2009, so he has a lot working in his favour.

It would be great to see Hugh Jackman finally get something that's worthy of a first Oscar nomination. But I have a feeling no one is beating Daniel Day-Lewis though. But you never know. Singing! Range! Deglam! Beloved Musical! Drama! Oscar-winning director and cast! 1st Time Nominee! That might do all the work for him.

I would say it's definitely a better shot for Hugh than it was for Richard Gere. After all, Chicago is all about the ladies, and Les Mis is definitely Valjean's story (though Eponine and Fantine get the more memorable songs)

Either way, I'm super excited! He looks incredible.

I dunno.. The King's Speech felt like a play stuffed into an incorrectly shot, overcooked, awards-seeking piece of mediocrity. Harsh, maybe (and I know I'm probably in the minority), but, given my long-time love for Les Miserables, I'm a little bummed to see such a new cinematic director take on something so epic. Why not choose a more seasoned auteur with an impressive filmography? I'm surprised they even hired someone who only recently ventured away from television. TV and film are different mediums with different demands, and it appears that adapting musicals is challenging enough as it is (see Rent, The Phantom of the Opera, Dreamgirls, Sweeney Todd, and Mamma Mia for contemporary examples).

However, Hugh Jackman DOES look absolutely amazing in these photos.

I don't mean to be such a negative Nancy... but I am curious to see if anyone else was as alarmed as I was to see Tom Hooper slated as the director. The fact that Tay Tay Swift was ousted makes me feel somewhat better about his respect for the prestige and reputation of the original.

all i can say is WOW!
I really hope this is going to be amazing.

Didn't Meryl Streep prove that they don't just give actors three Oscars willy nilly? Why are people already crowing about Daniel Day-Lewis winning?

March 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn

I was almost convinced we'd just keep hearing casting news for this movie. They're actually filming it, too?

I like the look: scars, shaven head, hobo beard...well-done, team.

How long until Samantha Barks gets her BFCA/Golden Globe/Oscar nominations? Surely that's as much a definite as J Hud's in Dreamgirls, right?

I hope he gets an Oscar nomination!

B/c he's playing ABRAHAM LINCOLN, Sherlock.

I am even more curios to see (or should I say "hear") how the whole thing will work out, particularly considering that they are not going to pre-record the songs. No lip-syncing. Rather, they'll be doing the singing live and then add the orchestra. I wonder how well they'll manage to eliminate ambient noise! Has anybody heard something about this?

I read that Jackson and Hathaway will most likely team up again for the PT Barnum musical, The Greatest Showman on Earth. The project was developed for Jackman.

@ Mac.

Only five people have ever won three Oscars, and Meryl is the only person to do it in the last thirty years. I have a hard time seeing a second three-time-winner in a two year period.

March 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSC

You know he's likely going to win the Golden Globe for musical/comedy for this, so he'll definitely be a contender.

March 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

Doesn't matter. I think it's DDL's Oscar to lose.
