The Avengers opens ON. MY. BIRTHDAY.
That is all.
i just sat through Qou Vadis. Anyone else seen it?
First production still of Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained is brilliant. Didn't know I could be more excited for that movie than I was.
Going to see Five Year Engagement this weekend. Tom, I vaguely remember seeing Quo Vadis years ago on TV. It does have Peter Ustinov as Nero, right? He was wonderful.
Finally saw 'Game Change' last night, and Julianne Moore nailed it! Oh so much fun :)
I'm looking forward to The Avengers, but not drooling. This doesn't make me a bad person, so why is it I'm getting burned at the stake for this opinion? Especially since I'm the only one of my friends who reads comics.
@Deborah Lipp: "Magic Mike" opens on my birthday, though that's not something I brag about.
I'm an avid Red Box patron, and each time I visit either the website or my neighborhood kiosk I am taken aback at how many straight-to-video titles I see featuring supposed A-list or marque actors. I feel like at one time that used to be a lot less frequent, but it appears to be more often now. Is it easy money? Are they films that couldn't find distribution? I don't get it.
Saw the trailer for Hope Springs with Streep, Jones, and Carell. Looks perfect for the AARP crowd but I'm not a member yet. Looking forward to Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, or dare I say, Men in Black 3, or even a rewatch of It's Complicated with an orange-ish Baldwin. What's up with Streep's hairdo in the new flick? Didn't her guy just win an Oscar?
This year's Oscar nominees could be made up mostly of the nominees two years ago (Bening, Lawrence, Williams, Kidman, Hawkes, Renner, Ruffalo, Weaver, Bonham Carter, Adams). If nothing else, they all took baity projects after their nomination.
All the movies yet to come out look especially intriguing, but maybe that's just how every year seems in April.
I wish Famke Janssen had a better career.
Ugly men in movies get to have hot women but could an ugly gay man in a movie be allowed to have a hot partner if it wasn't a sugar daddy / prostitute situation?
Hope Springs trailer looks funny! Glad to finally watch a Streep movie trailer and not really care if she gets an Oscar nomination or not :)
Martha Marcy May Marlene is in movie theaters in Germany since 5th or 12th of April, depending on what source one trusts. But in no cinema near me. Only in one out of an estimated 20+ theaters in the next big city 140 kms from here. I would have loved to go see it, but no chance to see it if you live on the countryside here. *Argh*
watch out for Meryl in August Osage County in 2013. A surefire Oscar player.
I can't wait to see Meryl in August: Osage County. I loved the play. Who's directing the movie?
Saw The Hunger Games last weekend with my teenage niece. I'm glad she loved it. I wanted to, but I feel it's one of those movies that need previous love for the books to fully love it. I liked it as a whole, but in the end I felt it was just another movie I'd soon forget. One pet peeve: the other (extras) contestants really look as teenagers, because they really are?, and even though Lawrence is just 21, it shows when next to the other ones. I don't know why that didn't bother the fans.
I also wondered what's the target audience for Streep's new movie. I mean, which target audience wants to picture Tommy Lee Jones having sex? Yes, seniors also have sex, that's great. But if I had to choose, I'd rather see Warren Beatty or even Kevin Costner as sexually active senior citizens. Also, how much shoulder shrugging and eye rolling is there in that trailer?
Cannes! Cannes! Cannes! The Competition (Cronenberg. Haneke. Daniels...). The jury (Gaultier, McGregor, Devos...). Kidman, Huppert, Binoche (all possible Best Actress Winner) God! I wish I could go there...
Sound of My Voice isn't opening at a theater near me tomorrow and I'm booked through the weekend so I can't journey into NYC just to see it. I will be very upset if this doesn't expand next week. Come on, per theater averages. Pack them theaters.
I said Chloe Moretz is a child prostitute and I mean it

I've seen some Leslie Howard movies and, I don't know if I'm the only one who thinks it, Howard and Tom Hiddleston are very alike. Since I've been in love with both since the very first time I saw them, I would die for a Howard biopic starred by Hiddleston. I also think Hiddlestone is a fine actor waiting for a great role, what do you think?
Saw the trailer for Hope Springs with Streep, Jones, and Carell. Looks kinda funny but a bit clunky. Streep and Jones make a surprisingly believable pair. Not sure what's going on with Streep's wig though!
Also I'm so excited to go see The Avengers tomorrow-although it shall be in french so I look forward to seeing what the voice over guys sound like.
I caught up with Game Change, too, and loved it. Not just Juliane Moore but Ed Harris!
I'm also actually looking forward to Dark Shadows, and I hope it rehabilitates the Depp/Burton alliance.
Damsels in Distress this weekend, then Avengers up next. Not a bad slate so far this year - 21 Jump Street, The Hunger Games, The Cabin in the Woods and Haywire were all very good. In fact, I'd rewatch any of them in a heartbeat.
Hate to say it, but if the buzz for Avengers is getting on your nerves (and yes, Whedon fans everywhere will be losing it - as will I), you are clearly not ready for the Batman buzz. I've been psyched since 2008, and I think most of the world is with me. Resign to it now and just ride the wave. (Hopefully the film isn't crushed under expectation, but as a Nolan devotee, I'm sure he can pull it off.)
Nat, I'm anxiously awaiting your Smash recaps for the past couple Uma episodes!
So a few posts back, I asked about In Contention- I thought that they hadn't been updating the blog in a month because the latest post I could see was from March 26. Now though, I'm on vacation and from a new internet address, I can access a full month's worth of posts that my computer hadn't been showing me. I have no idea why my computer wasn't showing the updated page! #ComputersAreWeird
I just watched The Avengers and loved it! Then again, I'm kind of a hardcore marvel nerd... I also watched Traffic last night and that is a pretty great movie too.
Nathaniel -- Are you going to post your responses to the last Q & A, which I believe was back in November? Just wondering . . . .
Joss fanboy. Avengers is the only thing on my cinematic mind, but no one wants to hear that. So uh... I'm so happy Fringe was renewed for a fifth and final season!
A double feature of Darling Companion and The Raven? Strange, indeed, yet I did it!
The other day, I watched "Léon - The Professional" starring Jean Reno and... a 12 years old Natalie Portman, making her big-screen debut and delivering what I think to be one of her best acting performances.
Watching Portman so young made me think about how other former child-actresses like Kirsten Dunst ("Interview with the Vampire: the Vampire Chronicles"), Scarlett Johansson ("The Horse Whisperer"), Jake Gyllenhaal ("October Sky") or Christian Bale ("Empire of the Sun") managed the success of their early careers and became successful A-list actors and actresses of today with enviable bodies of work.
I have to see "The Avengers" this weekend!
And I cannot wait to see "Dark Shadows"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, well now all these comments inspired me to watch the Hope Springs trailer. Is it weird that my first reaction is, "OMG! Elisabeth Shue!" I don't think she's the greatest actress or anything, but I've always liked her and found her to be such an interesting presence in movies. Yes, she's pretty and blonde, but there's something more interesting about her that elevates her above being just the "pretty blonde." But she's had such a weird career post-Oscar nomination, despite working consistently. I don't watch her on "CSI" so I hope she has a decent role in this movie, although it looks like she might just be in 1 or 2 scenes.
Nat, don't you worry that Hathaway's part is way too small in Les Miz for her to even be nominated, let a lone win? She basically disappears for the latter three-fourths of the show...
Has anyone noticed that the older you get, the more you think previously unattractive people are actually attractive? I'm not talking about people who grow up really and then look better, but rather the change within oneself.
I remember seeing Ruby Keeler in a couple of movies when I was a kid and just thinking she was the most awkward, unattractive dancer/singer ever. But I just recently rewatched Goldiggers of 1933 and, hmm, Ruby was kinda cute in her way. Ditto early Liza.
So did I change? Does this happen to anyone else?
I was just thinking about how you might respond to the new Hick trailer -- particularly with how Sasha introduced it on Awards Daily.
@3rtful,
That ain't never gonna happen!
Just saw the recently restored Come back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean with the glorious Sandy Dennis! Sandy. Dennis. Sandy Dennis is on my mind.
why no casting announcements on August Osage County beyond Streep & Roberts?
Been loving Kerry Washington's new TV series "Scandal" so much that it makes me wanna check out her latest theatrical film, "A Thousand Words" w/Eddie Murphy which JUST opened in the discount theater in my city!
There's a documentary festival which is a big deal here in Toronto. Stressed out and I don't know how I'm going to get through the next few and very expensive days. Consuming my second caffeinated drink!
Who knows about Meryl's hair in Hope Springs. If you think of it, it could just be a symptom of the slovenliness that might partly account for the state of her marriage. In any case, it's so nice to see her again. The woman is so creative. Even the body language is perfect!
Nathaniel,
Why are you being such a wimp about your year-in-advance Best Actress predictions? You're usually not so hesitant. As my colorful relatives used to say, "it's time to shit or get off the pot." Commit.
Regards,
Jonathan
