Film Bitch Awards Best Supporting Actress Prizes (2000-2011)

I'll announce 2012's nominees the second the write-ups are done (working on them this week). But until then another listy flashblack to year's past here at The Film Experience. My opinions have changed somewhat over the years (as many opinions should if we continue to evolve) and perhaps I'll detail which changes those were in the future but mostly I like to think of Awards, both mine and other people's as time capsules of What We Valued At That Moment.

Victor S., those recent concurrent supporting lineups are stellar. But the Supporting Oscar winners in the late 70s kicked some major ass: Supporting Actress 76 to 79: Straight, Redgrave, Smith, Streep; Supporting Actor 76 to 79: Robards, Robards, Walken, Douglas.

I haven't seen a lot of those pre-2004 movies -- only Gosford Park, Chicago, Far From Heaven, Adaptation and Almost Famous. I'm pleasantly surprised to find that I did see all of your 2004 nominees -- though only three I actually saw *in* 2004. Unfortunately, I've never gotten the love for either SIDEWAYS or Madsen's performance; on the other hand, I was mesmerized by Patty Clarkson in DOGVILLE.

Really, 2005 was the first time I really sat up and paid attention, and even then I feel grossly under-prepared (still haven't seen Junebug or North Country), but I've seen 70 movies from that year, so I suppose I know whereof I speak when I make a ballot.

Anyway:

2005 (as of now): CATHERINE KEENER, CAPOTE
also - Brenda Blethyn (Pride & Prejudice), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Happy Endings), Taraji P. Henson (Hustle & Flow), Catherine Keener (The 40-Year-Old Virgin)
Obviously, Keener was my pick of the Oscar nominees

2006: MERYL STREEP, A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION
also - Hope Davis (Infamous), Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls), Sharon Stone (Bobby)
Hudson was near the bottom of my own Top Five, but I thought her Oscar well-deserved. Few people would be willing to play that role in such an unlikable, unsympathetic way.

2007: CATE BLANCHETT, I'M NOT THERE
also - Laura Linney (The Nanny Diaries), Leslie Mann (Knocked Up), Michelle Pfeiffer (Hairspray), Susan Sarandon (In the Valley fo Elah)

2008: AMY ADAMS, DOUBT
This was actually my favorite performance of the year, with Adams carrying the film, rising above the material to deliver an effective performance that reminded me of both my sister and my mother.
also - Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Samantha Morton (Synecdoche, NY), Susan Sarandon (Speed Racer), Tilda Swinton (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)

2009: MO'NIQUE, PRECIOUS
This, too, was my favorite performance of the year, and one that I frequently revisit, if just to bask in her genius.
also - Marion Cotillard (Public Enemies), Julianne Moore (A Single Man), Samantha Morton (The Messenger), Kristin Scott Thomas (Easy Virtue)

2010: MELISSA LEO, THE FIGHTER
also - Amy Adams (The Fighter), Maria Paiato (I Am Love), Sissy Spacek, (Get Low), Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World)

2011: JENNIFER EHLE, CONTAGION
also - Jessica Chastain (The Help), Anne Heche (Cedar Rapids), Carey Mulligan (Shame), Zoe Wanamaker (My Week with Marilyn)

2012: Don't know who'd win yet, but I know for sure who's on my ballot -
Doona Bae, Cloud Atlas
Judi Dench, Skyfall
Megalyn Echikunwoke, Damsels in Distress
Macy Gray, The Paperboy
Spencer Locke, Detention

I LOVE shockingly amazing performances. Like, who would've thought that Mo'Nique, the standup comedienne from The Parkers and Soul Plane, would give the supporting actress performance of the decade (and if it were some sort of tournament, she could probably be a real contender for actress performance of the decade, and even overall performance)??? I just love it. She's nearly everyones choice for 2009 (and rightfully so!).

Also, shout-out to whoever mentioned Anika Noni Rose in Dreamgirls; she's so much more interesting and dynamic than J Hud, in my opinion.

I've always been pretty obsessed with this stuff, but I'm young, so I only started hardcore following performances and such recently ...

2011
Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids
(ru: Octavia Spencer/The Help)

2010
Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom
(ru: Mila Kunis/Black Swan)

2009
Mo'Nique in Precious
(ru: Marion Cotillard/Nine)

2008
Penelope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona
(ru: Viola Davis/Doubt)

~* 2008 is when I really started paying attention *~

2007
Jennifer Garner in Juno

2006
Anika Noni Rose in Dreamgirls

2005
Rachel Weisz in The Constant Gardener

2004
still haven't seen enough, and of the ones i've seen, i wasn't in love enough to give an award

2003
Holly Hunter in Thirteen

2002
Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago
(ru: Toni Collette/The Hours and Queen Latifah/Chicago)

2001
Laura Harring in Mulholland Dr.
(ru: Caroline O'Connor/Moulin Rouge!)

2000
Jennifer Connelly in Requiem for a Dream
(ru: Julie Walters/Billy Elliott)

1999
Toni Collette in The Sixth Sense
(ru: Sarah Michelle Gellar/Cruel Intentions*, Thora Birch/American Beauty, Mina Suvari/American Beauty, Helena Bonham Carter/Fight Club)

1998
Joan Allen in Pleasantville

Ugh I started to take this way too seriously and now I feel like I really need to sit down and sort through these. Now I want to do lead actress too haha.

My Supporting Actress Top Three 2000-2011:

00: Carrie Ann-Moss, Memento. (Silver and Bronze: Frances McDormand, Almost Famous and Jennifer Connelly, Requiem for a Dream.)
01: Gwyneth Paltrow, The Royal Tenenbaums (Silver and Bronze: Amy Smart, Rat Race and Marisa Tomei, In the Bedroom.)
02: Probably Clarkson, Far From Heaven. (Runner-up: ?)
03: Hope Davis, American Splendor. (Silver and Bronze: Kang Hye-Jeong, Oldboy and Maria Simon, Goodbye Lenin!)
04: Virginia Madsen, Sideways. (Silver and Bronze: Naomi Watts, I Heart Huckabees and Daryl Hannah, Kill Bill Vol. 2)
05: Anne Hathaway, Brokeback Mountain. (Silver and Bronze: Helena Bonham-Carter, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit and Catherine Keener, The 40 Year Old Virgin. (Shame the movie refused to actually mine it's concept in the right ways.))
06: Rebecca Hall, The Prestige. (Silver and Bronze: Eva Green, Casino Royale and Toni Collette, Little Miss Sunshine)
07: Keira Knightley, Atonement. (yes, I view her as MUCH closer to supporting than Saorise) (Silver and Bronze: Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There and Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone.)
08: Viola Davis, Doubt (Silver and Bronze: Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler and Samantha Morton, Synecdoche, New York)
09: Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air (Silver and Bronze: Christen Mooney, The Secret of Kells and Mo'Nique, Precious.) (My reasoning on Mo'Nique only being Bronze: There's certainly the surprise element to such a frightening turn, but it's a performance let down by the visual framing.)
10: Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom (Silver and Bronze: Olivia Williams, The Ghost Writer and Leslie Mann, I Love You Philip Morris)
11: Jessica Chastain, The Help (Silver and Bronze: Jennifer Aniston, Horrible Bosses and Octavia Spencer, The Help. They both almost embarass themselves due to being the most bizarrely written characters in their respective films but they both, somehow, wind up pulling it off.)

@Rami. Rosamund Pike was great in Made in Dagenham too. Hope she gets something better than Jack Reacher very soon.

Nathaniel--I'm confused again about the Oscar rules for Lead vs. Supporting Actor/Actress. This has troubled me since 2002 and The Hours. Is it actual screen time? Plot point? Lines of dialogue? In my book, all three were Lead. In an ensemble film like Gosford Park, is everyone "supporting"?

February 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Pam, I've been under the impression that it's the studios and actors together that decide which category they put themselves in for. I could be wrong. Waltz is definitely not Supporting, but it's probably Weinstein thought the Best Actor race was too tight this year.

February 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

For this year, I haven't seen Les Mis or The Sessions. Of the other three actresses, only Sally belongs in this race. Jacki's role was too thin and Amy was miscast.

February 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

I loved to read the shout-outs to the following non-Oscar nominated performances, which I also thought were great, some more obvious, some more obscure:
Olivia Williams, The Ghost Writer
Imelda Staunton, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Michelle Pfeiffer, White Oleander
Jennifer Garner, Juno
Mandy Moore and Eva Amurri, Saved! (I love it most, that that cute but mean little movie is mentioned at all, I wouldn’t put Mandy Moore in any best list, but I was very positively surprised by her – I mean, she was Mandy Moore, the pop starlet, right?)
Lucy Liu, Kill Bill Vol. 1
Joan Allen, Pleasantville (yeah)
Barbara Hershey, Black Swan
Christina Ricci, Monster (yeah yeah yeah, I have always thought she was great, but I’ve read more often how bad or dull she was than someone who shared my opinion)
Tilda Swinton, Forrest Gump II aka The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (the only good thing in that shitty, disappointing movie about two highly unlikeable characters)
Gong Li, Memoirs of a Geisha
Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds
Mila Kunis, Black Swan
Thora Birch, American Beauty (more for Thora herself, she was good in it but not that great, and I’ve always liked her and now where is she?)
Scarlett Johansson, Ghost World (more for the movie itself, don’t remember Scarlett in it, but would nominate Thora for lead)
Kirsten Dunst, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Corinna Harfouch, Downfall
Romola Garai, Atonement (really love her performance, though I love Saoirse’s about ten times more)

Some more thoughts/comments:
I’ve never heard of “Spider”, but I guess I should try to see it, since I always find Miranda Richardson very good to say the least.
@Nathaniel: Kirsten Dunst is supporting in “The Virgin Suicides”? If she is not lead, who is? Maybe nobody? It’s too long that I’ve seen it. There are movies without a lead. See below,
Atonement.
@JT: Scarlett Johansson supporting in “Lost in Translation”? Really?
It’s even hard for me to see Michelle Pfeiffer as supporting in White Oleander. I understand that it’s true, but - not meaning to diminish Alison Lohman’s performance, who is obviously the only real lead, but it’s just because Pfeiffer so owns this movie.
@Volvagia: Keira is definitely supporting in “Atonement” – shame on the Golden Globes, and every effort to sell this movie as a big epic romance thingy - , and Saoirse is closer to lead, but while Briony is definitely the main character, I can’t really see Saoirse as lead because she is only in half the movie. There is no lead actor in this movie, maybe McAvoy comes closest, but I picture his character as only supporting to Briony, who clearly is the only main character. Saoirse was so f***ing deserving of her Oscar nomination at her young age. Much more so than both Anna Paquin and Abby with there respective win/nomination, though I like both of them in their Oscar movies and pretty much everything I’ve seen with them.

I’ve made my own lists, but I don’t feel very good with them. I want to review and change them, but I don’t have enough time on my hands and I’ve seen too few movies in too many years.
Instead of publishing lists or even winners I just want to mention some performances not mentioned before (or by Oscar) that I would probably include any time:

Laurie Metcalf, Scream 2
Cameron Diaz, Being John Malkovich
Beth Grant (winner), Maggie Gyllenhaal and Mary McDonnell, Donnie Darko
Renée Zellweger, White Oleander (though I normally can’t stand her, and though of course Michelle wins)
Chiaki Kuriyama, Kill Bill Vol. 1 (Lucy wins though)
Nicole Kidman, The Golden Compass (though one could argue she’s lead)
Chloe Grace Moretz, Kick-Ass (I know noone’s with me here on this site, but there, I said it)
Jessica Barden, Hanna (Saoirse was my reason for watching it, and good as always, but somehow she drew the attention away from her)
Olivia Williams, Hanna
Elizabeth Banks, The Hunger Games (anyone?)

February 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDominik

m83: A couple of your chosen performances are so big that there's no reasonable way not to view them as leading (Scar Jo in Ghost World and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Scott Pilgrim) and a lot of others are so bleeping small I'd think they'd fit better in a designated category BELOW supporting (Tilda Swinton in Adaptation. and Ben Button, Kierston Wareing in Fish Tank, Olivia Williams in An Education, Anjelica Huston in The Darjeeling Limited, Carrie Preston in Duplicity and Sally Hawkins in Vera Drake)

February 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

volvag -- it just goes to show you how subject these things are. You say "no reasonable way..."? and yet i view both of those performances as 100% supporting (and everyone knows i'm a stickler about all the lead performances that only pretend to be supporting)

pam & brookesboy -- it's the studios and actors who decide FOR WHICH CATEGORY TO CAMPAIGN but Oscar rules say that voters are not bound to any such classification and are free to vote for them in whichever category they see fit (SAG *must* follow the studio's directive which is why you sometimes see a difference between leading and support between SAG & Oscar nominations) i.e. Keisha Castle Hughes "whale rider" submitted as supporting and nominated thusly at SAG but corrected by Oscar and elevated to the lead category where she belonged because Oscar voters were not required to follow the dumb "official" stance that the only main character in that movie was actually a supporting character.

February 7, 2013 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

@Volvagia: "Ghost World" is mainly about Birch and those who gravitate around her, I don't see ScarJo as leading at all. I guess an argument could be made for Winstead given the fact that "Scott Pilgrim" is parts romcom, but I'd probably need a rewatch to assert that.

As for the smaller performances, I don't believe in relegating them in limited/cameo categories. Don't get me wrong, I love that the Film Bitch Awards have such categories, but I don't see the problem with having a 5-minute turn nominated alongside a 30-minute one, especially when there are so many instances where bit players manage to upstage and leave a more lasting impression than everyone else in the movie. Hell, I was this close to giving Sally Hawkins another mention for "An Education", and she's in it for maybe a minute. But what she does in that one minute is rather amazing, if you ask me.

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterm83

Interesting and Diverse list but Fiona Shaw in The Black Dahlia is an awful choice - terrible performance in a god awful movie.
