Happy Birthday Nicole & NathanielR?

Kidman's first Vanity Fair appearance in 1990 with the "Dead Calm" look

I can still hear her saying it...

Nathaniel. It's Nicole!"

...t'was one of my all time favorite life moments, interviewing her. Today twitter informed me that it was my 7th birthday there. By their count I'm almost old enough to start obsessing on movies. And, as Graham pointed out, that means I joined Twitter on Nicole Kidman's birthday. Was this intentional? I can't recall. For our faux shared anniversary, Catarina challenged me to share my single favorite Nicole Kidman photograph. Just one? I've selected seven in keeping with my twitter age.

My top seven (at the moment) are after the jump but before we get there, I just want to say that this challenge led me to Kidman pictures I'd never seen before like this one with Ed Harris from Bruce Weber! They didn't have any scenes together in The Hours so what was going on here? I'm obviously forgetting a movie as I'm typing.

Ed Harris & Nicole Kidman as photographed by Bruce Weber

Or this one from... I'm not sure where.

MY FAVORITE NICOLE KIDMAN PHOTOGRAPHS

#7.
Simple yet perfect. Love the panties.

#6
Love this whole Jimmy Choo campaign. Possibly because it reminds me of Charlotte Bless which I'm always fine with being reminded of

#5
Was this from Vanity Fair? I can't remember

#4
Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier in Australia
"Get me Demarchelier" / "I have Patrick"

#3
offkilter carnality. slightly possessed. confrontational yet immobile. glamourous yet scary. I love every single thing about this portrait. Complex enough to honor her as a subject. Photographed by Peter Lindbergh who did a whole incredible black and white shoot with her to promote Nine I think it was.

#2
Because no discussion of Nicole is complete without her auteur madness. Actress as muse, disciple, partner, object and subject.
Photographed by Annie Leibovitz

#1
Nicole Kidman by Peggy Sirrota (Sirotta is amazing in general)

The Kidman/Harris picture was probably from around the same time as The Human Stain's release.

LOVE Nicole! Fuck off haters.

MORE! The Top 100 Nicole Kidman Pictures.

Happy birthday to my favorite actress! <3

I liked the previous Jimmy Choo campaign better. She looked incredibly hot with that red bob and David Lynch singing in the background.

I miss the curls!

And that interview you did with her was so adorable and such a great read. Your interviews always are. :)

Haha love the Demarchelier quote from "The Devil Wears Prada"! I quote that all the time. LOVE Nicole too, she's truly fearless.

I always loved the Vogue spread with her on the stage. So statuesque!

But my favorite is a black and white from Baz's Chanel ad.

Talk about over saturation - Kidman, not Streep.... The woman does how many films per year and advertising campaigns!

Love her.

Nicole Kidman is The One.

June 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTB

The Chanel print ad with Baz and the coinciding commercial directed by him were completely flawless. The height of her beauty, to me. And I remember they would even play the long version of the ad in theaters around that time too... you know, the commercials before the trailers? I'd relish in it each time, it was so gorgeous! *sigh*

Another shot of her that I really love that I can't find for the life of me is one from around 1999/2000, possibly for Vogue, where she's wielding some sorta of golden sword in profile and looking particularly amazonian. I think she's in Galliano or something but her hair is in an dramatic Grecian updo and I remember it being beyond amazing.

What amazes me is the fawning and noone mentions the chnage in her entire facialappearence, yes it is old but you allhave to admit itshe looks v v different, love her in general and the surgeries don't bother me but you need toackinowledge as a flaw in her personality.

There are fans here who love her and who in a positive way are celebrating her birthday. They'd rather not analyze her shortcomings today. I'm a fan obviously. I think it's a mistake that she has made in having botox and lip filler. I definitely wish she would not have seen the need to change herself. However, have you seen photos of her at the Shanghai Film Fest with less make up than usual? She definitely looks like the Nicole of the early 2000's (before the changes) so I think she is trying to make amends. Also, what you call "fawning" others would call "admiring" so it's definitely subjective and as Nathaniel has said in the past, she is "divisive" in her films (and imo her personal choices). There have been a few actresses and actors in the history of film who were considered "divisive" at one time or another, among them Katherine Hepburn, so Nicole is not in such bad company.

@mark

I do not care that I have a bastard reputation here. I am going to tell you that those of us who appreciate Kidman wholly -- know how polarizing she is and would appreciate if you left the consistent shit criticisms of her for other parts of the internet.

June 20, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

@3rtful

do as you preach and keep your opinions of Streep to yourself... just saying!

June 20, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterrick

That is MY favorite....

June 20, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

It's hard to top Annie Leibovitz' photos of Nicole and that is one of her best...

June 20, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdawn

@mark--Why should plastic surgery be a "flaw" that women should be ashamed of? Nicole Kidman and any other woman who has plastic surgery aren't doing it for YOU. They are doing it for themselves. Why should they be ashamed for about doing what they need to do to feel good about their own damn body? UGH.

June 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTB

My only gripe is if you are going to look at pics of someone I think it should be mentioned.

June 21, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermark

Happy Birthday Nicole! She is 2 months 10 days older than me. Grew up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney while I grew up on the Southern Beaches. I don't envy her celebrity life but I admire her gutsy drive, determination and passion for her craft.

June 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJoanne

Amzing. Plus, she's the honour of having been protographed by the Great Irving Penn. And not one but twice.

June 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJ.D

The photos are great, except #6.
Too much photoshop. Ugh.

A day too late, but still... Happy Birthday, Nicole! 8)

June 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSonja

She is still my goddess. So gorgeous. She was my first film crush

June 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJosh

That shot with Ed Harris is sexy! I wish it was a still from a movie because I'd watch.

June 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Mark - I just don't get what made you think this was the place for that? This is clearly a Nicole appreciation post. There's no reason for anyone here to talk about her plastic surgery, lol. Also don't see why it's such a "negative" personality flaw. I don't think she looks as good anymore and I wish she didn't do it, but that's exactly what women in society, and particularly the industry, deal with. Without it, they're old and haggard and every one talks about them for it, but once they get it, everyone still talks shit about them and their looks. Lose-lose. So drop it.
