DIY YNMS, OK?
Acronym Attack! Yes No Maybe So is not a comprehensive series and we cherry pick the trailers we want to discuss and watch. But sometimes we aren't trying to throw shade by ignoring them. They just get released on the wrong days. For instance, what was with two major trailers debuting the morning of the Emmy nominations? I immediately forgot they existed after reading a headline that they did because you have to pick your showbiz battles.
A bunch of trailers we haven't discussed like Wild, Life After Beth, Big Hero 6 and one that I refuse to watch because I want every frame to be a blessed surprise (Xavier Dolan's Mommy) and more after the jump...
BIG HERO 6... the teaser was a total ripoff of The Incredibles first teaser when Mr Incredible was too fat for his suit. This looks more like its own thing except the big robot guy is very Strong Sad from Homestar Runner no?
WILD... in which Reese ditches the makeup and her life to hike and clear her head and try to return to Oscar's favor
LIFE AFTER BETH ...zombie girlfriend. Did anyone ever catch that indie I suggested called Make Out With Violence a few years back. (Same topic, less comedic)
DRACULA UNTOLD ... who? Never heard of 'em. Nobody has TOLD me. Tell!
ANNABELLE ...prequel to The Conjuring. I guess Chucky franchise left a killer doll vacancy
MOMMY ...Xavier Dolan's Cannes sensation
OUIJA BOARD ... just wanted to see if you were still paying attention. WHY? The Ouija Board is what you put in one scene in a horror movie to be spooky. Not for two hours!

Why does Wild seem terribly self -indulgent? For some reason I am getting a bad "why should I care?" vibe from that trailer?
Big Hero 6: yes. Looks really sweet and funny.
Wild: maybe so. It looks good - soulful, visually lovely, and Reese looks super engaged in the rol - but it looks like such a genetically engineered awards movie. I'm skeptical, but ready to be won over.
Life After Beth - yes! Love this trailer. DeHaan and Plaza seem like a great combo, and I have huge crushes on both of them.
Dracula Untold - maybe so. Actually looks kind of fun, but what are the odds that this is an actual good movie? Pretty slim, right? I'll wait for reviews.
Annabelle - nah. Didn't see The Conjuring, and horror isn't really my thing.
Mommy - hell yes! Can't wait to catch this on the fall festival circuit.
Ouija - hell no! Not if you paid me, unless you paid me a million bucks, in which case, okay.
Phew! I'm exhausted. But that was fun :)
Wild is the first movie Reese has made that I want to see in nearly a decade - and I like her!
That said, if I hadn't read and enjoyed the book, I might be less enthusiastic about the trailer.
Big Hero 6: Maybe. On video or at the drive-in with the kids.
Wild: Liked the book, but I am getting weary of the memoir genre, especially the trend of young-ish, mostly successful people writing about some sad childhood issue and/or about their road to recovery. I'm worried this film adaptation will fall in to the Eat Pray Love camp. Happy for Reese, if this is a way back, but not so sure about awards. An actress without makeup is not automatic grounds for Oscar nominations in my book, nor is portraying real people (w or w/o weird noses--talking to you, Kidman), nor is crying in a snowy field with bloody feet.
Life After Beth: Zombies? I'm in.
Mommy: If I'm close to a big city where it will undoubtedly play in some indie theater.
The others: Probably not until video, if at all.
I was pleasatly surprised by Wild and a little disappointed by Mommy.
Expectations, that double-edged sword.
I'm jumping into say a big YES to MAKE-OUT WITH VIOLENCE.
Big Hero 6:
Yes: Dedicating half the trailer to a single scene. Gives a sense of tone without entirely spoiling narrative flow.
No: My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark? Really? Wouldn't Ellie Goulding's Burn have been, in terms of lyrics at least, more fitting?
Maybe So: Will they be able to keep up the energy?
Wild:
Yes: The cinematography looks really good.
No: Reese LOOKS close to "DULL SURPRISE" in half the clips. (Movies about any form of depression are probably difficult to make trailers about.)
Maybe So: The rest of the supporting cast might pick up the slack, unless her hike is pretty much half the movie.
Dracula Untold:
Yes: Pulp fun. Underexplored period of the whole Dracula thing (Vlad Tepes transition).
No: If the script was good, you'd think a more experienced director would be on hand.
Maybe So: In this year of quality blockbusters, having an actual debut FIND wouldn't be out of place.
I was more excited this week by the teaser trailer for "God Help the Girl".
"Ouija" looks shockingly low rent, even lower than my initial expectations.
Mommy: Yes
Dracula Untold: Oh yeah
After Beth: Maybe
Big Hero 6: Nope
Annabelle: Never
Ouija Board: Never ever
Wild: Every time I see an ad for this, I think I'd rather see Mia Wasikowska in Tracks. I think even if I was in the movie theatre watching Wild, I'd be thinking why aren't I rewatching Tracks instead? I like Reese Witherspoon, but the more I learn about this movie the less I like it. I'd rather see the Australian outback with camels and a heroine who is alone.
"Wild" looks like "Into the Wild".
"Ouija Board" should be rainy Saturday night fun at home, if nothing more.
However, if "Annabelle" is as well done and spooky as "The Conjuring", then it might be a "yes"
Clap Clap!
YES to Mommy
Maybe so on Wild and Big hero 6
NO to the rest
