Thoughts on Ozu? I don't think I've ever seen him covered here.
What TV show, current or recent, would be well served by a feature film? What show should absolutely not have a movie?
I hate to ask, but are you terrified by the prospects of President Trump? I know I am.
Queen Madonna is just finishing up her Rebel Heart world tour within the month. What would you like to see her take on next creatively? Acting? Directing? Biography?
Do you listen to the commentaries on DVDs? If so what is your favorite one, and if you could be a part of a film's "fans commentary" for a movie, which would it be?
Which 2008 Kate Winslet performance do you prefer - Revolutionary Road or The Reader?
You've spoken in the past about your dislike for narration in movies, a view with which I normally agree. That being said, do any movies come to mind in which you thought the narration was actually an asset to the film? The two that come immediately to mind for me are ELECTION and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
Who do you believe is more worthy of an acting Oscar between Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Johnny Depp, and who do you think is more likely to win one?
Why do female movie stars now largely seem to be in their 20's or 60's? There seems to be a resistance to embrace middle-aged stars (apart from Sandra Bullock or Charlize Theron). Cate Blanchett seems like a nice lady, but she makes niche movies and she can't open a film as a lead. Would be curious to hear your thoughts on this phenomenon.
This there a Oscar winner living or dead that you think is underrated or unappreciated? Someone who had a brief pass with glory but deserved a lifetime of it?
The Oscars, Bafta, SAG, all seem to have an inherent bias (snobbery) against comic performances. Great comic films and performances rarely get nominated, and even more rarely do they win.
Why? Why is drama valued more highly than comedy?
Since you've talked to more directors and actors than I have - have they ever offered any insight, justification, or exasperation for why this prejudice exists?
(this may be one of the great imponderable questions of our time - I would love to hear your thoughts even if you don't have a real answer.)
I am on Spring Break from school right now and I was wondering, Nat, what are your favourite classroom/school set movies?
You mentioned on Facebook you just saw 'The King and I' on Broadway. What did you think?! Do you think Kelli O'Hara could ever make it on the big screen?
I saw Man on a Ledge on tv the other night and have decided I want to see Jamie Bell in more (better) stuff. Do you think he could "break out" again (and how might he do it) or will he always be Billy Elliot?
How do you know that a movie's editing is good? Do you ever think of what is left in the cutting room floor of a movie?
Who will tie Geraldine Page when she receives her 8th Oscar nomination? Blanchett, Dench, Fonda or Winslet? Blanchett or Winslet would be my pick, though there are so many actresses tied with six right now: Burstyn, Close, Lange, Redgrave, Smith, and Spacek. Adams and Lawrence are hot on their heels though....
Will Samuel L. Jackson ever get another great role that is not in a Marvel movie or a Quentin Tarantino movie? I'm rooting for him and his career.
What do you think of Sandy Dennis?
Is Kathy Bates similar to Shelley Winters?
Is it too soon to award Glenn Close an honorary Oscar?
Are you confused by the enthusiastic push of Jennifer Lawrence as an all-time great based on accelerated award season recognition?
Who was your favorite among Charlie's Angels?
Where is streaming and virtual reality taking the movies? Will actors and movie stars become increasingly less important or unique as entertainment becomes designed for the quick buck and/or presentation on various platforms/gadgets?
Which actor/actress will be the first openly gay Academy Award winner?
How would you recast Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep in a new film project? There must be an another story worthy of their talents so they can re-team in a new film.
Alt: if you put Meryl on a strict diet of auteurs, who would you pair her with for her next 3 films?
James - I hope me!
While we are all terrified of a certain former reality TV host becoming a Presidential nominee (He Who Shall Not Be Named), I was wondering if you could make a case for 5 film/TV characters past or present you would most want to be a Presidential nominee (in the fantasy would where fictitious characters are real and all is right with the world)?
What's your favorite movie to watch on a sick day?
IDK if you're a big sports fan but with March Madness around the corner, what are your favorite sports themed films?
What is your favourite Australian film?
Of these 3 films scored by the great Ryuichi Sakamoto ( yes he scored The Revenant but I do not care for that movie and that wasn't his best musical work either), The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and The Sheltering Sky, which Film has aged well the and is the best of the bunch ? You can rate them based on a mixture of personal bias and an objective critical eye. And do you think The Last Emperor deserved Best Picture that year?
Bradford Young just finished capturing Michelle Pfeiffer on film in "Beat-Up Little Seagull". Can you remember the first film that left you mesmerized by the combination of an actress's image, and how the cinematographer brought her to light?
Which documentary subject of 2015 could you see working best for a feature film? I'm choosing to ignore the Nina Simone film, since it looks...not good.
