'Moonlight' Rising

by Chris Feil

We've been excited at The Film Experience for Barry Jenkins's Moonlight, the follow-up to his 2008 tiny but magnificent debut Medicine for Melancholy (which is available on Netflix - you're welcome). You're going to want to catch up to that film if you haven't because if the buzz is to be believed on Moonlight, the writer/director has something special coming our way.

This week the film was announced as part of the lineups of both New York Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival. In Toronto, it will compete in the Platform section meant to launch auteurs to the next stage of their career. If the just released trailer is any indication, Moonlight has the goods to do just that - take a look at this stunner:

Consider our breath offically taken. Not only does the trailer make good on the buzz we've been hearing for Naomie Harris's performance, but the images are full throttle gut-punchers running the spectrum from sexy to devastating. If the film itself is as visually arresting and emotionally investing as these short two minutes, then we are in for something special indeed. A24 also has Mike Mills's 20th Century Women coming this Oscar season, but their success with Room last year shows what they can do with a modest emotional powerhouse like this.

Moonlight opens on October 21. Which moment from the trailer took your breath away?

The whole thing took my breath away. But Trevante Rhodes and Andre Holland looking at each other - my heart stopped. Those looks pierce the heart, so much longing.

Looks superb. The shot of Naomie Harris in old age makeup, smoking a cigarette and crying potentially cemented an Oscar nomination.

How incredible if this takes off with Oscar. A story about black, gay men. Even in 2016, it would be fantastic.

Pretty amazing. I'm ready to hate on every critic who doesn't like before I've even seen it :p

Was in hysterics about it yesterday. Black gay men never had an epic before. Nothing prior to Moonlight had this level of aesthetics. Brad Pitt is a genuine ally. Unfortunate our world remains patriarchal and white supremacist. Because who wants to rely on allies to get things done? Harris should be a lock in supporting actress. Which prior to this project felt vague. The emphasis on blue makes me wish they used the whole title of In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.

I think it looks terrific! I am so excited to see Andre Holland in a potentially major big-screen role. He's a significant talent. Yay for A24!

Does anyone recognize the score? I feel I've heard it elsewhere but can't place it.

Yes. This looks fantastic. That shot of the man with his hands over his face (in the bathroom?) was especially haunting.

Looks totally wonderful... Thanks for the Netflix call out to his other movie... Will watch as soon as possible.

I don't know how some of you on this blog can see so many movies .. I really lack the time.

Is 20th Century Women an episodic film? That is; is it three different stories, or is it one story involving three women. Because I can't think of actors or actresses being nominated in episodic films. Maybe somebody remembers one. Everybody seems to be predicting Annette Benning for Best Actress, but if the film is episodic then she should run for Supporting, right?

August 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarcos

Bening doesn't settle for supporting hence her Best Actress nomination for The Kids Are All Right. And you have nothing to say about Moonlight? I wanna live in that movie just from watching the trailer.

August 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Well that just looks amazing. Can't wait.

right now Benning should take whatever she is handed... she has been an absentee actress for a lot of here career...

I did watch Medicine for Melancholy tonight with my wife, and we both thought it was wonderful...

Bening in her 50's is competitive for a Best Actress statuette. Thanks Julianne Moore for making it possible for both Davis and Bening to be potential winners in this category.
