Hoping Kirsten Dunst gets her first Oscar nod for The Beguiled.
Wondering what Janelle Monae's next cinematic move will be.
Wondering how long it'll take another asian actress to get an Oscar nomination... a native american. A black woman to win leading. etc.
I'm still waiting for Christina Hendricks' big fat stellar movie role. I miss Mad Men so much, and I miss seeing Hendricks every week. I'm kind of nervous about her career. Moss is gonna be ok (like Peggy).
Somewhat thinking about Hollywood really messes up what to do with young actors. Three names leap to mind - Emmy Rossum, Christopher Pine and Luke Evans. Three very beautiful people who were given bland leading role opportunities, and didn't prove their talent until they took a quirky supporting role (Rossum on TV in Shameless, Pine in Into the Woods, and Evans as Gaston in BatB). I'm sure there are lots of other examples, but its what struck my most keenly while watching Evans hit the tone of his performance so precisely, while a lot of other more seasoned actors floundered in voice roles.
Darth Maul's dead...again in a Seven Samurai referencing Star Wars spin off cartoon.
Recalling The Impossible with the flood here in Lima. Just awful.
Wondering when, if ever, Marvel decides to officially place a film of the Marvel Netflix roster, and who they have it be when they do. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones or The Punisher, place your bets now.
How wonderful Signe Hasso is in Douglas Sirk's underrated comedy A Scandal in Paris. Of course not anywhere near All That HEaven Allows in anyway, but still a good warm-up.
A sequel of Enchanted has been announced. I mean, I really LOVE Enchanted, but is there really the need of a sequel?
But then again this has to be the stupiest question in Hollywood.....
CAL - so true about Peggy & Joan
ANA -- :(
JESPER - i haven't heard of that one. Must look it up
Cal Roth:
Hear hear about Christina Hendricks!
- don't know what people see in Elisabeth Moss, though!
Philip H: I don't see it happening - Dunst getting an Oscar nod for The Beguiled.
She didn't seem very convincing in the trailer, her line readings sounded weirdly off - so did her accent.
The should've gotten a nom and won for Marie Antoinette, though.
Because I don't think she'll ever be that good again.
Same with Scarlett Johansson; she should've gotten a nom and won for Lost In Translation - I don't see her ever being that good again - all the endless, shitty superhero movies have dulled her acting skills...
@Ulrich - people see talent in Moss!
Ulrich: Dude, I'm someone who refuses to be unfair to any specific genre, performances or otherwise. I've seen ScarJo in prestige. She's often not good in prestige (the only time where I'd say she WAS was Pearl Earring) and I'd even say that her bottom five performances are mostly the nakedly "prestige" stuff. There's definitely people I wouldn't want entirely or primarily lost to the franchise machine. ScarJo isn't really one of those. "Action Goddess" is probably a better legacy for her (we need more of those, and she's uncommonly good (Marvel Movies, Lucy) at it), even if she NEVER gets an Oscar nomination. And, yes, it is kind of painful to admit this is an actress who gave a better performance in The Perfect Score than in either of her Woody Allen pictures, let alone in the Marvel movies.
I'm wondering if March is the mini-summer. Logan, Kong, Beauty, CHiPs and Power Rangers are like a summer lineup.
Harry Dean Stanton is on my mind.
I'm trying to figure out:
- how I can see his new movie, "Lucky"
- how many people I can drag along with me to see it
- what muse or goddess I have to give offerings of fruit or flowers (Thalia, Euterpe?) so that this wildly original strange and marvellous actor is widely seen?
The ferris wheel casting in Hollywood at the moment, where has half of the actors gone.
Nat - I'm wondering when you'll finish the Film Bitch Awards. The last few categories are always the most fun!
Last night I watched an interview, recorded a few years ago on TCM, with Eva Marie Saint and fell in love with her instantly. What a smart, fun, engaging woman. Searched online to see if she ever wrote a memoir...she didn't so I ordered Angelica Houston's instead.
Adri: I couldn't agree more. I was going to post about Lucky and then saw your comment!
Big Little Lies has me doing a mini-Kidman retrospective. I listened to the You Must Remember This about Bacall and it mentioned Birth and Dogville—just as the debate heats up about "bring back dubbing," and so I'm listening to "Sparkling Diamonds" nonstop. Last night was probably her most gripping episode yet.
How lucky we are to have Nicole Kidman. Consider that at her height she was the most iconoclastic actress in the world AND the most glamorous movie star. You usually don't get to be both. And she's goofy and modest and passionate and fearless and self-aware. While remaining a total girl's girl. And a guy's girl, in that subversive submissive way she talks about directors. She contains such wondrous multitudes.
Not really interested but we have a first important contender for Best Picture with "Beauty and the Beast"... it is, in less than one week, the biggest live-action musical ever, in terms of b.o. The Golden Globes will likely nom it for Picture, Actress and Song, and it will probably being a contender for a PGA nom and Watson automatically launches herself as a BAFTA contender (we all know, BAFTA is just waiting for a good chance, to give awards to the Potter trio).
Also, "Get Out", is in my book, a strong contender for Original Screenplay already, but I am unsure if it'll go beyond that.
On Original Screenplay and Actress, too, I'd say "Colossal"'s chances will be determined once the film opens. I'd say right now, that is going nowhere awards-wise, but I love Vigalondo's work to date, and he's a previous Oscar winner with an unique voice... he could be very well labelled, the spanish Spike Jonze. I'm so eager to see this one.
Next friday, Alex de la Iglesia's latest, "El Bar", opens and it looks amazing, and everything I hear from this one, from people that saw it last friday at the Malaga Film Festival is outstanding. I hope it is as good as his latest, "My Big Night", because I think that one was his true masterpiece.
And a bit disappointed, "T2: Trainspotting" didn't fare better. I have to still wait to see an Osca nom for Ewen Bremner....
Jesus Alonso: Um, no. Beauty and the Beast 2017 is a TEXTBOOK "B.O is it's own reward" case, especially since they've already nominated a pretty much agreed as superior version of this. I'd guess Baby Driver becomes a nominee before I guessed this new release does. The big musical to watch this year is The Greatest Showman.
A corner of Twitter was brimming with angry people over the weekend. They were angry with feminists who were angry that Gal Gadot has shaved armpits in the Wonder Woman trailers.
Guess what Twitter was not brimming with? Angry feminists. I didn't see one single tweet from an angry feminist.
I've looked up some of the articles - there are very many articles about this major controversy by now - and they all exhibit the same angry "feminist" armpit tweets. All five of them. And they aren't even angry.
To me, it doesn't matter. Shaved armpits are okay, bushy ones are okay too as long as they don't block my view of Chris Pine. I'm a bad, bad feminist.
I hate to bring up the Oscars, BUT... I've been thinking about something a lot lately for some reason. If actors were allowed to have one more than one nomination in a given category, can you think of a year in which an actor or actress would likely have been nominated twice? Streep in Out of Africa AND Plenty? Keaton in Annie Hall AND Goodbar? Daniel Day-Lewis in In the Name of the Father AND Age of Innocence? It's interesting to consider. At least for me.
@Jesus Alonso: thinking about Oscar nominations for "Get Out", I would put Betty Gabriel in for Best Supporting Actress. It's an incredibly effective turn that really sets the looming worry of the mood. Gabriel does everything, gestures, emotions, fluttering character changes, so smoothly and eerily. The movie wouldn't have worked nearly as well without her.
@Marcos: Shared joy is a wonderful thing!
adri -- LOVED betty gabriel in Get Out, too.
djdeeday -- it's always so hard to get too. it takes forever. but i'll keep plugging away at in the background.
I am wondering what's going on with the Helen Reddy biopic.
Wondering if Disney is going full steam ahead with a live-action Little Mermaid film after counting their box-office receipts from BATBeast. Not looking forward to anything rehashed, remade, rebooted, re-imagined, recast, re-sexed-but it would be interesting to see the underwater visuals along with an IMAX Ursala sea-creature...
TOM: Of this modern cycle of Disney Remakes, we've gotten:
1. Alice in Wonderland
2. Maleficent, a villain focused revision of Sleeping Beauty. Probably the most interesting of this cycle to date.
3. Cinderella
4. The Jungle Book
5. Pete's Dragon
6. Beauty and the Beast
Before this active "cycle", Disney was tied to remakes of
101 Dalmatians
Pinocchio (The Roberto Benigni Pinocchio, dubbed by Breckin Meyer. Yes, it's tied to Disney. MIRAMAX.)
What I'd guess won't be touched, for various reasons:
Fantasia and Fantasia 2000
Bambi
Any of the Short Compilation Features
Lady and the Tramp
The Aristocats
Fox Robin Hood
The Rescuers
The Fox and the Hound
The Great Mouse Detective
Oliver & Company
Hercules
Tarzan
Dinosaur
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Treasure Planet
Brother Bear
Home on the Range
Bolt
Zootopia
So, throwing out the "probably no point, too much animal focus" or "this isn't good enough" or, in The Aristocats and Brother Bear cases, both, candidates, what are we left with.
Snow White
Dumbo (Yes, they're seriously trying to develop a live-action Dumbo movie)
Peter Pan
The Sword in the Stone
Winnie the Pooh
The Black Cauldron
The Little Mermaid
Aladdin
The Lion King
Pocahontas
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Mulan
The Emperor's New Groove
Lilo & Stitch
Meet the Robinsons
Princess and the Frog
Tangled
Frozen
Big Hero 6
Moana
(20 candidates. Yes, some of these (Frozen and Moana) are almost certainly decades off. But they will go on the docket eventually. As will the upcoming Gigantic, just you watch.)
