Do tell. The movie landscape has been a bit bleak this summer, hasn't it? Any requests?

NATHANIEL - Have you seen HOLDING THE MAN yet?
It is because when every movie is a tentpole film, none of them are tentpoles.
On my mind this morning is wondering when the first Filipino film will break out here in the US. I was watching Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown episode in Manila and that alone would make for a great film. The plight of overseas foreign workers would certainly make for an interesting movie. The Philippines' amazing landscape has been used in classic films (Apocalypse Now) but it has yet to be featured prominently and well by Filipino filmmakers.
Hey Nathaniel, do you think you could make a post about multi nominated (not including one timers to make it easier) actors who've already won an Oscar this century, and evaluate their chances of winning a 2nd Oscar in your opinion?
I have been thinking about female directors and second chances, or the lack of. Karyn Kusama came to mind this week after Wonder Woman becoming such a hit. Karen did this great indie and went to do a big Blockbuster that was a stinker, but unlike male directors who share the same fate never got a new chance to play the game and works mostly in TV. A common story sadly. Do you think Jenkins breaking records and ALL that she's accomplished will change the state of things at least a bit?
Are you planning anything special for the Blu-Ray release of SILKWOOD next month? Been waiting for this for a LONG time. Now if only THE HOURS would show up soon!
What do you think of Ariana Grande becoming an honory citizen of my home city Manchester.
Thinking about "Rough Night", which will be released this week... God, how I miss Scarlett not busy avenging the world - a critical hit or not, a commercial success or not, it will be refreshing to see her being just human in "Rough Night", for sure
There's nothing about Rough Night that looks human.
I'm curious about your feelings on The Handmaid's Tale. I honestly think it would make a great choice for HMWYBS. If I could hand an Emmy to any one right now I'd give it to Elizabeth Moss for her amazing work on the show.
Out of the films from Cannes which are you most excited to see make their stateside debut? Mine are probably The Beguiled, How to Talk to Girls at Parties (I don't care if the reviews are bad), and 120 BPM.
Hi Nathaniel! Why is The Crown running for Drama Series and not for Limited Series like Feud or Big Little Lies? All of the above will or could have second seasons and they roughly have the same number of episodes.
Brad: I mean, if your definition of human is tied to scale more than style of characterization, than, yes, Rough Night looks plenty human.
With the hubbub around Tom Cruise and The Mummy, it got me thinking about Cruise. He probably finished second in the Oscar voting all three times he was nominated. I wonder how fascinating it would be to have Oscar voting be made public.
For example, how close was the Moonlight-La La Land vote? Was Isabella Huppert close to upsetting Emma Stone? Did Andrew Garfield receive any votes?
Marcos: What I'd say the rules are right now for Limited Series is this: Any show with 10 episodes or less that either A: Flat ends after that 10 episodes or less or B: Is An American Horror Story or American Crime Story style "Long Form Anthology" in that same amount of time. Pitching there likely means Big Little Lies won't get a Season 2 (fitting A) and we already knew Feud was going to be a long form anthology show (fitting B). The Crown has the low episode count, but its not over yet AND is going to follow the same characters next season. So, it goes in Drama Series.
This week I watched 'Starman' for the first time. Jeff Bridges was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar that year. To me, that has to be one of the most bizarre acting nominations - not that he wasn't good, but because of his unique character, the genre, his performance and the film itself. It just seems really unusual. There must be other factors that played that year (box office, love of actor, love of the film, critical acclaim?) - things that don't register watching the film in 2017.
Are there any acting nominations that stand out to you, that make you wonder, how in the world did THAT happen?
Not much on my 'cinematic' mind but I just finished the latest season of Orange is the New Black and I'm just emotional devastated.
Also, can that show win a special ensemble Emmy? The cast is (almost) unanimously brilliant and I can't believe so few individual cast members have received nominations/wins.
I was remembering a while ago that whole "de-glam" era of Best Actress Oscar winners which lasted for just about a decade. There hasn't been a trend like that for some time now.
There's not a lot of things to see other than Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Beguiled, and maybe another viewing of Wonder Woman. Really, I just want to stay home.
Pa -- this is a good idea!
Adam -- i have not.
Ben -- i've come to believe that all nominees in a category get some votes... else how would they have been nominated in the first place (as weird as that is in some instances)
Brian -- i'm going to try to write something about that series since it ends today. Short answer is that i thought it was totally fascinating and superbly acted (not just from Moss but across the board) even though i have a few issues here and there... I tend to really hate voiceover for example which the show relies really heavily on.
Jeff -- i wasn't because I'd forgotten. But that's a great idea since it's my second or third or first favorite Meryl Streep performance and an all around great movie.
Gena's birthday is next week and you could celebrate by finally seeing A Woman Under The Influence!!!!
thevoid99: The new Edgar Wright is also in two weeks?
Chris Pine. Do you think he could get an Oscar nomination one day?
Also, will you be updating your charts soon? Love your site!
I still haven't let go of the fact that Gugu Mbatha-Raw played Plumette in Beauty and the Beast when she clearly should've been Belle.
Have you seen "The Big Chill" (One of my all time favorites), and which of the 3 (or which of the 7) performances is your favorite?
I always liked Mary Kay Place the most, and I have a soft spot for Kevin Kline, as we went to the same high school (Go Rebels!)
I'm fearful of and annoyed at how typically crowded the end of the year looks, especially with the news of Woody Allen's newest being released in December.
Or maybe I just need the new Todd Haynes now and Call Me By Your Name would really be an IDEAL summer film.
The Tonys has me thinking that Jennifer Ehle and Laura Linney need to play sisters on the big screen now.
Update your review section and finish the Film Bitch awards if you haven't. I need my fix baby. But yeah ehh I'm looking forward to Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri, Murder on the Orient Express and for the first time; a Thor movie. Dark World was probably the weakest film in the MCU l, but teaming up with Hulk and Taika Waititi helming sounds like a lethal combo. I want mother! To hurry up and come our because Noah didn't feel like a Darren Aronofsky film at all so I miss him. And always willing to give JLAW a chance to wow me as she has the Academy. Pretty dry year so far tho.
Volvagia: Thanks for the explanation! That was crystal clear!
Nathaniel - Normally voiceover can bug me, but in this case with how its used I actually quite like it. I like being inside June's head.
Victoria and Abdul! How good does Judi look? CoughYesNoMaybeSoCough
Nathaniel - Do you think which movies will likely be SAG contenders for Best Film Ensemble nominees?
Ben, I agree. I bet Sylvester Stallone lost to Mark Rylance by only a small handful of votes two years ago.
"Gena's birthday is next week and you could celebrate by finally seeing A Woman Under The Influence!!!!"
I support this. It's just bonkers that you still haven't seen it!
Do you have a Filmstruck membership? A Woman Under the Influence was just added to streaming there. I was going to rewatch it.
Marcos -- Volvagia's explanation was just his personal opinion though. That's not actually the Emmy rules (which keep changing!)
Suzanne -- i do but I have so many memberships i keep forgetting to use them.
Brookesboy - YES!
Watching my kid watch "Little Shop of Horrors" for the first time was the highlight of my week.
When is the next episode of Hit Me With Your Best Shot going to be?!?!?!? I was sick and then away so couldn't do Wonder Woman or The Parent Trap, but that series is one of my favorite things on the internet, both to participate in and just to read!
Pfeiffer, Pfeiffer, Pfeiffer, Pfeiffer, Pfeiffer, Pfeiffer!!!!!!
With so much love out there for Wonder Woman, does that give the film any better odds of picking up an Academy nod in the tech categories like special effects or costumes?
I can't believe Elizabeth Banks did not know Steven Spielberg directed The Color Purple.
