Official Foreign Film Submissions Thus Far

All the foreign submission charts have been updated to reflect the speedy announcements of new titles. We're now up to 84 (last year's tally was an all time record of 85). Somehow I neglected to include Ireland on the submission charts. They've selected an "audacious" biopic about the singer Joe Heany called Song of Granite. The film uses both documentary footage and narrative sequences. It's in black and white and looks gorgeous in still photos

How was Ireland allowed to submit Song of Granite? Isn't it all in English?

When everything seemed to be settled in Argentina, between La Cordillera (The Summit) and Zama (with Nobody's Watching a possible dark horse) to represent us at the Oscars, there's a last-minute player in the game. Venice Festival's Critics' Week award has gone to first-time director Natalia Garagliola's "Hunting Season". The film is a father-son drama about a hunting guide living in Patagonia who has to contend with a teenage son he practically doesn't know. "Hunting Season" will be released next week, just ahead of the Argentine Academy voting process.

I'm still surprised France has decided on BPM. It seems like such an across the board crowd pleaser. I don't know what other options they're mulling.

Of these I've seen In the Fade (excellent performance by Kruger and a haunting final image) and White Sun (lovely, very baity in terms of Oscar, but very well done). Looking forward to see more...

Just saw The Square...
I liked it... like 3.5 out of 4... Ruben Östlund is an exciting auteur with an interesting voice.
The Square was exciting, because one doesn't know what to expect next...
Kind of Toni Erdmann-esque, minus the warmth and the humor.
But I think that for the Academy it's a bit too artsy.
Without a clear strong ending and the storyline is a little weird - leaving many things unexplained and open.

There is an error in the description of the Panamanian film Illegitimate. It is not a young boxer but a young footballer who discovers that his recently deceased mother is not really his biological mother so he decides to look for who his biological parents are and discovers that his real father is a corrupt politician.

This year (2017) has been a very productive year for the cinema of Panama, have been released five films. As I said before, they are:

Kimura:
Two brothers who have been estranged for years face each other in a fight competition.

La Matamoros:
It's a documentary about Marta Matamoros, a union leader who fought for fair wages and working hours for women.

Ilegitimo:
It is about a young footballer who discovers that his recently deceased mother is not his biological mother. So he decides to find out who his father is and discovers that he is a corrupt politician.

Mas que Hermanos (Beyond Brotherhood):
It is about a brother and sister who have to survive many problems in the streets. Although the cast includes Drew Fuller (Charmed) so I do not know how much English can have the movie.

Donaire y Esplendor:
It is a comedy about a man and a woman who fall in love in times of carnival but their families are rivals (especially their mothers)

I suspect that Donaire y Esplendor will be the one selected since it is the one that has more promotion, more budget and is the most successful.
