Months of Meryl: THE RIVER WILD

"Great post and comments. Yes, Streep had to navigate the rough waters of being in her 40's! I do think she smashed through the glass ceiling for women since she persevered and then became an even bigger star in her 50's." - Sister Rona

"One of my favourite movies from my teen years - I'm shocked at how long ago this was released. It was Meryl that sold this movie for me and is the reason I saw it. At the time, and I still feel this way, she is the reason to watch and believe this film." -Filmboymichael

Lost Podcast / Last Jedi

Surprise! The following podcast was lost after a recent move but has been recovered. This podcast was recorded over the Christmas break but the SAG part at least is hyper relevant to this weekend with the Screen Actors Guild Awards hitting tomorrow.

Nathaniel welcomes a particularly grouchy Nick Davis and new guest Teo Bugbee who had just pulled an all nighter to see Star Wars The Last Jedi. We discuss what the hell Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro are doing in it before moving on to SAG's "Outstanding Ensemble" nominees (and other ensemble films we like, too).

Your podcasts are the best and one of the best ways to get through the dark winter months of January and February.

I knew Laura Dern wasn't a traitor once I saw she was wearing an actual halo. What an interesting costume choice.

I'd be thrilled if Get Out. Lady Bird, or Big Sick won (but especially the first two). Also super great: Beatriz at Dinner, The Salesman, and It.

Glad you guys are back again!

Teo is awesome. More Teo, please!

I don't really understand why people consider the casino planet scene a waste of time. It's the place where the film gets interestingly political about the arms merchants who prop up the First Order. It gives us John Boyega at his most charmingly comedic. It lets Kelly Marie Tran shine with more good stuff to do. Benecio gets to be a degenerate weirdo. And it plants the seed of those future-Jedi kids. All in all I prefer that subplot to a lot of the other bloated parts of the movie.

I'm glad that Nick suggested The Meyerowitz Stories for Ensemble. I agree that in that way it's one of the year's best films.
