Playbill very cool news. The tony winning The Color Purple musical will be adapted to screen. Smart of Cynthia Erivo to immediately focus on the screen following her Tony win for that show. Perhaps she can transfer the role now that she has a larger profile in the film industry?

Rebel Wilson was such a flash in the pan - I keep trying to like her (and her new movie looks kinda funny) but she makes it so hard to!
And WEISZ deserves her second nomination! !!
Maybe they get The Color Purple right this time.
I always forget that Annie Lennox won an Oscar.
The original movie is fine flaws and all. No adaption of the story will replicate the book.
I love Annie Lennox! She's said that she's not particularly interested in releasing new albums at this point--I'm hoping she changes her mind. She has a one-in-a-million voice.
"Disobedience deserves a place in awards season."
Yes. Specifically Best Supporting Actor. Please, for the love of god, SOMEONE give Alessandro Nivola recognition at the end of the year. Even one critics award would be fine. I just don't want him to be completely ignored.
Rebel Wilson had such an easy out with this controversy since both PHAT GIRLZ and JUST WRIGHT (the two titles people are bringing up most frequently as counter to Wilson's comment) didn't get theatrical releases in her home of Australia and I imagine most here wouldn't have heard of them. Alas she comes off sounding silly, unprofessional and a dismissive of racial element. But then I'm not a fan anyway, so...
So glad they've announced a COLOR PURPLE musical adaptation. Not everyone has access to Broadway or even travelling shows (that aren't necessarily as good) so I'm happy with this 'remake' and, yes, smart to wait and see if Cynthia could hold her own on screen rather than just on stage. She very much can.
If "The Color Purple" cast anyone but Cynthia Erivo they are stupid. But great news, wonder if they'll get some interesting director for it. Rob Marshall stay away please. Melina Matsoukas would be an amazing left field choice.
V -- ooh. that's an intriguing idea... though we dont know how she is with features, yet.
I would like the ridiculous Rebel Wilson comments (and attempted defence of said comments) to provoke a full article or ideally The Film Experience Mini-Series on...
Last Holiday
starring Queen Latifah
It's probably one of my most-watched romantic comedies of all time (and in the Wayne Wang canon sits proudly alongside Maid In Manhattan, another easily dismissed masterpiece of the genre).
Someone once said of Maggie Smith in Sister Act "she's so good that it appears she's not even acting" and I apply this statement to Queen Latifah in this role. So charismatic and effortless.
