5 Things We Learned from the New CATS Trailer
by Chris Feil
After meow-ny long and empty weeks, we were finally treated to another trailer for Tom Hooper's Andrew Lloyd Webber's T.S. Eliot's CATS. And you might say that it was a little bit of a disappointment after the first look sent the internet into a giant flame of gleeful schadenfreude (or maybe we're all still waking up from the release of its catnap-inducing original song candidate "Beautiful Ghosts"). This quick tease featured no singing and was a bit too fast-paced to glimpse any of the dancing. But the final trailer did give us a few bits of new information to be both earnestly and ironically excited about:
- It's apparently the "Most Joyous Event of the Holiday Season". Like the previous "You Will Believe" tagline, this also sounds like a threat.
- LOTS more dialogue than expected highly suggests that the film will try to lean into some semblance of a plot or overexplain its "new life" conceit.
- The cats have boobs and love to shake them.
- The trippiest element may be the proportions of the cats to their environment. See: kitty door flap, trash cans, shoe sizes, entire miniature ice cream parlor, etc.
- Idris Elba might be the slithering, villainous, sexy (?) MVP.

I learned that the Razzie Awards will have a field day with this project...
You know your Mother will love it.
The film still looks bizarre but this is a better trailer. There is less emphasis on the musical aspects and more on the comedy and spectacle. "Cats" really should have been an animated film
Are they trying to sell this to the non musical loving crowd?
I know I'm hearing four different variations of a Jason Derulo yelp. I don't understand it and why he's only yelling.
Jaragon: it is (whilst also not)...

It looks worse than the previous film. I ain't gonna see this shit but I am so looking forward to Taylor Swift and Jason Derulo to win their first Razzies. Maybe this way, they learn to stick to making shitty music and not act in films or even write (though I doubt Derulo can write a sentence) songs for films.
I saw it on Broadway and in San Francisco.... hated it both times.
Probably will not see the film.
Thevoid99, of course the black man woouldn’t be able to write a sentence.
Oh, thevoid99, the infantile rage of finding out that a film was made for people with taste different from your own. I can see why you're so angry.
I am not saying the trailer is good, but the sets are certainly big, and there seems to be a lot of leaping. I've never seen the Broadway show, and yet, I think this is going to make as much money as "Les Miserables". (family choice for holiday cinema going) Just a hunch.
Love good musicals - this looks unfortunately really ridiculous. Most annoying: Rebel Wilson doing another of the 100 exactly similar clumsy performances she did already - now as a cat ... I feel a hairball rising up my throat ..
This film is an insult to all cats.
Nice post ! grateful for your blog post. You will find a lot of approaches after visiting your post

Will probably end up seeing it for the dancing and spectacle but the comedy was cringe-worthy each time they tried to land a joke. “HA! THINGS CATS DO!” or “INTERNET CAT MEME REFERENCE” was basically the punchline each time.
I didn't write the "Of course the black man woouldn’t be able to write a sentence"
I'm still not sure this film exists.
Good point first Joan Castleman. Other Joan Castleman, um, good for you? The real Joan Castleman made an astute observation consistent with their commenting history. Leave them be and get your jollies elsewhere. We got your back here real J.C.
Oh my...
This is a disaster waiting to happen.
The Internet is gonna have a field day with this as soon as it opens.
Whoever greenlighted this must have been on drugs.
I was a wee child living in Astoria during part of Cat's crazy big as hell reign. As I got older I learned it was apparently not that good. But the idea of the film was pretty awful.
Then I saw the trailer.
It was all worse than all that surrounded Aladdin.
@Jaragon, I agree 100% with you. Animation is the perfect field to tell a story with singing and dancing cats.
When I knew this movie was going to be done, I immediately thought about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rrXR6n0RTY&list=PL6OdihDlxJqZIZPXY-RikpOU7zC_AyUHV&index=4
What i learned with this second trailer is that apparently a chubby cat is goofier than a thin one.
This looks like an empty expensive spectacle. It's also Cats, which makes it eminently skippable.
Idris Elba's role is always attractive, he's an amazing actor.
