The latest in a long line of attempts to keep the Terminator franchise going opened below expectations and will have trouble breaking even given its enormous budget. They shouldn't have messed with the mandatory ass shot! In other news Harriet performed above expectations which bodes well for Cynthia Erivo's Oscar campaign which had been losing some lustre after decent but hardly inspiring reviews for the film. Parasite continues to be a smash hit in limited release and is in a ton of markets now on 461 screens.  It'll be the second highest-grossing subtitled picture this year within a week (with only The Farewell left to conquer)

Parasite... blown away by it!!! Was also so encouraged to see it in a packed theater in a mainstream cinema... nice to see there are people out there who want to see thought provoking film rather than typical stuff being blown up

Saw Luce a very confused message movie, bit on the nose, cast is great,Spencer is a less volatile Ma,Watts impresses most.

Scary Stories a picture book in search of a plot with horrible teen acting.

Eli a seen it before horror with a neat twist and the villain wins. This is not what i expected Lili Taylor to be doing after seeing she was a 90's indie darling.

Dolemite is my Name great fun,and a great insight into a genre I know little about,if only Murphy could squeeze into Best Actor it would be well earned.

Terminator movies after T2 are unnecessary fan fiction retreads.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Parasite - excellent, but I thought it got a little too busy towards the end, and there seemed to be 5 conclusions, before it settled on one, which at least was a very satisfying one. Fantastic producton design, cinematograhy, editing and musical score. The acting was fine across the board, although no real standout, a true ensemble. The Mother is still my favorite Bong Joon Ho film.

The Lighthouse - All that talent operating at top capacity and yet it is unwatchable! You couldn't pay me to watch that thing again.

Though I saw Harriet in a sold out screening, I believe the bio pic is headed for a future in upper elementary school classrooms. I do feel Cynthia Erivo's earnest portrayal is relatively authentic, especially her physicality. I had no doubt this woman could run 90 miles to freedom.

I struggled with some of the politically correct dialogue. At one point Tubman is admonishing the leaders of the Underground Railroad for their ignorance of the truth of slavery. She specifically points out the "rape of girls before their first blood." Does an illiterate former slave in the early 1800s know the word rape? Perhaps so, but that line and others like it broke my concentration.

"Harriet" should not go anywhere near the Oscars.

A re-watch of A League of Their Own and just now, a first-timer in Unknown Pleasures.

Parasite: Solid movie. Cho Yeo-jeong, who plays Mrs. Park, was the VIP for me and deserves to be in consideration for awards. According to the wiki page, she has been nominated for a few but in best actress category. I thought she was supporting, since the film isn't really about her, but if best actress choices are slim this year maybe that is her best bet.

Judy: People in the theatre were audibly sobbing when the movie ended. Renee was very good as was Jessie Buckley as her assistant/babysitter. The movie tends to drag on longer then it should, but overall it's a good movie.

I saw Pain & Glory and I LOVED IT SO MUCH!

My new dream is to live in an Almodovar home.

And as perfect as Antonio is, are people failing to notice Asier Exteandia? I thought he was fantastic, too.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

I also saw Pain & Glory and also loved it so much! What a complex, moving film, and Banderas has never been better. Both Asier Exteandia and Leonardo Sbaraglia give terrific supporting actor performances -- if this were an English speaking movie, they'd be possible nominees.

My two favorite movies this year are Spanish with gay themes -- this and "End of the Century."

I don't quite get the acclaim for "Parasite." Lots of ideas in need of a good script editor, and just so depressing.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterdtsf

Must confess HARRIET box-office numbers impressed me. It shows how admiration and love for a movie are two different things. Guess Erivo is back to Best Actress big game. A lot of people saying Best Actress is weak this year, but it's getting bloodier week after week... Zellweger, Johansson, Theron, Awkwafina, Woodard, Ronan, Nyong'o and now Erivo once again... C'mon! It's getting fun!

BTW, paying attention to PARASITE and JOJO RABBIT's box office numbers. It seems Oscar chances are materializing at the box office

Finally saw Cold War and holy cow! what a movie. Got me riled up again about the lesser Roma winning all the international plaudits 🙄

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJames from Ames

I saw “Harriet”.
I was a bit bemused by it at first, then I realized that they were going for accessibility. The familiar format, already embedded in everyone’s head, so the points it makes get directly stored in memory. Then memory muses over the ideas, not the filmic aspects.

I admire Kasi Lemmons as a filmmaker. It takes guts to go for plain speaking, and resist the bells and whistles that would give you individual kudos for being clever. But this is the first movie about Harriet, and the foundational one. Subsequent movies can be more idiosyncratic.

I also liked the way it reclaimed the “god narrative”. So that if you were a woman who considered herself a Christian, “Harriet” could be your kind of movie, a movie where women say “no” and don’t have to do what men tell them. Rather than thinking that those creepy “christian” movies are “your” movies, and you have to accept all the oppressive patriarchal baggage that comes with them.

I saw "Joker" and walked out of it. Yes I HATED it. "Taxi Driver" with a clown. I was not impressed by the one note performance either- yes he will probably get an Oscar nomination because the Academy loves it when good looking actors make themselves ugly. And what exactly is the point of this thing- to make us feel sorry for the villain. He kills three young men in cold blood but hey it's ok because they are white frat boy types.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

JoJo Rabbit -- I don't think this movie is for everyone. It has a weird tone throughout and ultimately, the story is very thin. The young male lead is quite good for a child performance.

Echo in the Canyon and Tell Me Who I Am on Netflix. Both very good.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTom Ford

I saw

THE KING: first 50 min really rush and we feel that a lot of information is missing. Next 90 min? Great! Loved everything, but the cinematography, Joel Edgerton and Lily-Rose Depp were the standout for me! Lily, what a great actress u are!

LUCE: very confusing film, but great acting! I want Octavia nominated because she deserves everything, but Naomi was the A++ of all!!

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJay

I saw Parasite. Very very good. Maybe even great. Can't wait to see it again.

Also, kudos to Neon for actually releasing it.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

Finally watch Joker, Joaquin Phoenix is great (but Benny Emmanuel in Chicuarotes is still my favorite 'evil clown' this year) and the movie starts slow, continues great to the clímax...and the ending part ruins everything to me.

To recover myself i watch online Katy la Oruga and surprises me how good it is. Is a shame that the animated mexican films these days are so lame.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCésar Gaytán

"The Lighthouse," which is the second film this year that does a really good job of trapping you in men's rapidly unraveling psyches (after "Joker" of course). And Dafoe should be right up there with Phoenix for awards consideration.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

Pain & Glory - good but not great. The final third of the film kind of slacked for no good reason.
Maleficent - what a waste of talent. Much worse than the first one I may add.
Taiwanese movie (not sure of the official translation - but here goes: Limited Sky) - terrific indie film that says a lot in the non-human scenes.
Fourplay - .merely a staged film with 4 principal actors, predictable in terms of story.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJans

The Lighthouse- technically impressive of course as was the acting. Can't say I loved it though? more admired/liked? Maybe it was the really uncomfortable row of seats i was in with no leg room? Or maybe that meant the movie was working on me as claustrophobically intended? Or maybe it was too PTSD-inducing (bringing back memories of being trapped in a small town with a Mormon Missionary companion I grew to loathe-- h/t to my sister in law for helping me realize this).

Casino- at the Castro again. Really disappointed. Seemed so familiar and the extreme constant use of narration/exposition for the entire first hour of this 3 hour slog almost killed me. Ironically, this "Scorcese week" selection convinced me NOT to see The Irishman (I had been on the fence) next week.

November 3, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSFOTroy

I saw Marriage Story. Liked but did not love it. Felt super "sitcomy" in places. The serving of the divorce papers scene - yikes. And the movie so favors the Adam Driver character it's ridiculous. That being said it does contain what most certainly will be my favorite scene of the year. Also, Laura Dern is fun bit it is basically Renata 2.0.

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

It is nice to see that both Parasite and P&G are doing great, even if it is a bit painful P&G is being eclipsed by Parasite

So far, I saw P&G twice and I love it, so far my #1 film of the year and can easily remain at that position when all is said and done (that ENDING, WOW).

Seeing Parasite tomorrow, for the first time. I normally have a better (way better) track record of loving films with Bong Joon-Ho than with Almodovar (which is kind of 50/50 to me, a master that is so bloated with ego than can easily sink his own stories, like in The Flower of my Secret or I'm so Excited). So I expect to love it, specially given all the raves that came before.

That being said, I would love that both Parasite and Pain and Glory WOULD BE nominated for Picture, Director, Actor (yeah, both films), Original Screenplay, Film Editing, Cinematography, Score, International Film... so that would be the battle of the Oscar night, and how awesome would it be, if the two biggest winners of the night, were foreign language films?

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJesus

PARASITE - Loved this.
ZOMBIELAND - A rewatch, and still quote enjoyable although I’m not as enamoured with it as I was back then.
OUIJA HOUSE - A little slow in the beginning but once the reveal happens it’s a cool concept. Not sure if they pulled it off but hey, another Tara Reid film in my repertoire.

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P.

Parasite - Masterpiece, so glad I went in blind. I can't wait to see it again.

Zombieland: Double Tap - same movie as the first. Redundant, but enjoyable. Zoey Deutch is a treasure.

The King - Too self-serious for its own good, but Timothee continues to show his range and the last hour is quite gripping. Lovely cinematography - wish I'd seen it on the big screen, but noooooo Netflix.

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterchasm301

I actually lowered my expectations for HARRIET before I saw it, but ended up really liking it. Someone in the comments said it was the foundational movie and I totally get that. Let's have a Harriet Tubman every every few years please. I say that in jest, but a bit seriously because this movie really FELT like a superhero movie and you know what... YES. Harriet Tubman is a goddamn superhero.

Not a film, but I ended up seeing TINA TURNER musical on Broadway this weekend too and I love that for it and HARRIET, there were black women who were enthusiastically vocal with what they were watching and tbh I don't think there was a better way to see both.

I saw four buzzy titles. In order from favorite to least favorite:

Parasite - My favorite of the year so far. Incredibly entertaining and also fun to analyze. The production design is amazing (apparently the entire poor neighborhood was a set created so that the storm could be realized). I think it could win Best Original Screenplay - Talk to Her did so, and we've had other Foreign Language nominees. (And I think it deserves to win over the other frontrunner....)

The Lighthouse - I was surprised I liked this as much as I did. But, like Parasite, I thought it was very funny in parts, and the cinematography is stunning. This is my favorite Willem Dafoe performance of the past 3 years, and I would be psyched to see him nominated for it. But I sort of doubt something this weird can be nominated for Oscars in such a crowded year even if they love Dafoe.

Marriage Story - Disappointing. I agree with Michael R that it was sitcommy in parts, and some scenes rang false to me. The three main actors were great, but Dern in particular was not given enough to do. I will be interested to see the mass reaction to this when it debuts on Netflix.

Harriet - I would have liked to have learned about Tubman's work as a spy for the Union. Easily my least favorite of the movies/performances that have been discussed as potential Best Actress contenders.

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Parasite: blown away by it. I love how the audience is manipulated to try to feel one way and it completely goes the opposite direction. I want to see it again, but at the same time I don't want to ruin that first-time viewing high.

The Lighthouse: MASSIVELY annoyed that half the dialogue was incomprehensible. IMO, it was trying to shard to be an artsy film with the B&W color, and the square orientation. It was a frustrating movie and I wanted it to end sooner. I never want to see this again!

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn

For me it is a very exciting time to be going to the movies, so many quality films coming out. I saw two movies during the week and two more during the weekend and enjoyed all of them.

Western Stars - enjoyed way more than I thought I would. I'm a medium Springsteen fan, but found myself loving the music. Some of the songs and mini films between songs naturally worked better than others, but on the whole it was well done.

The Lighthouse - I think this film is more enjoyable in retrospect than in the moment because it is an uncomfortable sit. Glad I saw it, but never want to sit through it again. It had a couple of scenes where I laughed out loud. Two very strong performances and I appreciate the originality and vision of the material even if it doesn't entirely hit the mark.

Jojo Rabbit - went in with tempered expectations because I thought the trailer was a bit weak. However, thoroughly enjoyed it. It was equal parts touching and amusing. I appreciated an original take on the Nazi experience, which at this point feels difficult to pull off. Great acting turns from the children.

Pain and Glory - Antonio Banderas is phenomenal and really enjoyed the look/colors of the film (and I want to live in his apartment). It was a slow film, but pace was not an issue because it was so engaging.

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMike C

I saw The Irishman, which was elegiac and tragic. It's not a movie that is full of bravado, but it's a meditative one that reflects on aging and mortality. It's very much informed by the age and history of its legendary director and actors.

I also saw The King which was fine, but rather monotone. It's a CliffsNotes version of the Henry V story that doesn't excavate a new perspective on Prince Hal.

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

Heard that Netflix is only releasing The IIrishman in the top ten markets theatrically before it streams. This saddens me to no end.

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

I saw DIAMINTINO on DVD and I thought it was a lot of fun. Sometimes you just need super ridiculous and charming. Plus the leading man seemed pretty much shirtless throughout which certainly helped.

Then I finally saw JUDY at the movie theater. I was pretty much the only one there, which was fine. I liked it I guess, but it didn't really grab me considering I am the complete target audience for it. Renee was fine (I've never had a problem with her), but she was more Renee than Judy really. Surprisingly, I thought it worked best in the singing/music scenes. Renee did only an approximation of her singing, but it was enough. I wish the movie was better directed though. It seemed very by the numbers, ditto the screenplay.

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDave in Hollywood

I saw Harriet. The movie blew my mind that Harriet Tubman was a true Christian and said no to slavery. Erivo is added to my Oscar list of best actresses for this year
Next weekend I want to see the lighthouse and jojo rabbit.

Terminator dark fate was okay, nothing special

November 4, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Saw THE KING in a surprisingly packed theatre considering it's already on Netflix. Loved Chalamet and Edgerton and cinematography.

Then saw PAIN AND GLORY officially number two of the year (after the sublime Marriage Story). Antonio Banderas needs a nomination, that was outstanding work
