Weakest best actress lineup in... decades?

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

I rarely watch movies these days but like seeing Bates back in the mix and I'm happy that Daniel missed for The Irishman. Gotta check out Parasite at some point.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJeromestone

Complete shut out for:
Uncut Gems
Queen & Slim
Hustlers
The Farewell

There are actually more movies nominated this year (1 more, anyway) than last.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Lipp

Can we have an almost there for J Lo when Bafta didn't go there and a recent article on her Razzie nom tally and being a powerful sexual female in the film I knew this was no longer a sure thing.I'd have booted out Johansson,Dern or Robbie for her.

I saw the Two Popes yesterday and Hopkins certainly deserves it,Pryce is good but it's not showy but well done after a snub last year.

No Eddie Murphy is a big shame he's on fire in the film

I was very pleased to see them pass on Taron Egerton that film and his acting is an unholy mess, the 70's and 80's were colourful, this was steeped in green & brown,no way could i believe he was the Elton I grew up,if you want to see Elton in action see You Tube.

So nice to see Banderas Cannes helped and he has a lot of Academy friends and the performance is a beauty but he won't win

Kathy Bates nomination is very welcome that Press Conference scene had been listed as a scene of the yr and she's a veteran playing a doting Mum so i'd say that's the slightly a surprise..

They liked LW but not enough for Greta to get in.Is Saorsie the knew Kate Winslet or what,is she a threat now to Renee or Scarlett as they r in better liked films

Is Scarlett the next Sigourney Weaver.

Shame about the horror bias which led to no Lupita whose doing much more in a 1 of a kind role than the transformers are doing.

Pitt,Dern are your supporting winners Leads i'm not sure now.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Good things about the nominations:
Jarin Blaschke for The Lighthouse in Cinematography
The Edge of Democracy
Antonio
Florence Pugh
Saoirse receives 4 nods at age 25
Tom Hanks breaks his drought
6 nods for Parasite, including production design and editing
Matthew A. Cherry nominated for Hair Love

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterjules

I remain perplexed by the Irishman love. Did we all watch the same movie? Again, I don't think it's bad, just aggressively unambitious to the point of near inertia.

I blame the seemingly uninspired nominations on the reduced voting time frame. They need to change it back next year. I literally can just see members voting on who they know, because they haven't watched all their screeners. "Anthony Hopkins? Check. Kathy Bates? Check."

Is that what we have to blame for this? God, these nominations are so stale that it makes total sense that voters names of things and people with which they're most familiar. It feels like steps back from the last few years.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

I'm dreading the half-assed, deflecting response the Academy is going to give regarding these noms. Did they conveniently forget to send ballots to all of the new members? I can't fathom these retrograde nominations.

Shame shame shame on the academy
I hope you annonce film bitch awards nominations soon , we all need a remedy

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAmirfarhang

Academy: Let's fool people into thinking Antonio Banderas is a person of color so they'll shut up about diversity. lol

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermareko

I just read the post from Nathaniel about the identity stealing,Well Done, your right this year went off the boil with too much back and forth nastiness,I come here everyday and have done for almost 20 yrs and I was put off to,post your feelings but not get into cat fights because someone disagrees or isn't as up to date with internet trends and subjects as you.

Your a gr8 host Nat bring on the FB'S..

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

I also think the Apollo 11 omission is a good thing. The critical hosannas for that film were mind-boggling to me. Assembling a compilation of already-existing footage seems much easier than creating a wholly original work like American Factory, The Edge of Democracy, or For Sama.

Peggy Sue:

And what's so frustrating about that is that it DIDN'T HAVE TO BE!!
They picked the most lazy, safe 5 choices of the Best Actress pool out there.

UGH

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Troy this does feel very 90s/early 00s. The maddening thing for me is that all of the best picture nominees that I've seen (still haven't gotten to 1917 or Parasite) are good but not great. I can think of at least 5 movies I've seen this year that are better than all the nominees. Not under-the-radar films either - ones seen and acclaimed by critics and audiences.

I have another theory besides the truncated voting schedule, one less likely but still... - the new diverse and younger body of Academy members aren't voting. Perhaps its apathy, busy schedules, or a disdain toward awards themselves.

Regardless of the root cause, what is the solution? Bake-offs for all categories?

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

To me the snub pattern has more to do with genre/release/box office than diversity per se. Performances from earlier in the year (Egerton, Awkwafina) didn’t make the cut, despite last minute surges. Genre performances (Lupita, the cast of Parasite) were shut out as Toni Collette was last year, and even Dafoe was this year. They didn’t go for pulpier subject matter (Lopez, Sandler) despite critical love for those performances.

(I also think Lopez and Sandler are complicated figures in the Hollywood pantheon for unique reasons. There’s a ton of bad movies and cash grabs between them to suddenly convert into first-time Oscar nominees. Is the Academy snobby? Absolutely.)

I mean, look at Erivo—she coasted to a nomination. I don’t see her as a token diversity nominee OR someone the film community feels passionate about this year. She just proves that Oscar loves a crusty, paint-by-numbers biopic whether it features Winston Churchill or Harriet Tubman. They’re kind of equal opportunity in that way. If Lupita had played Harriet Tubman she’d be 100 percent in.

Also, the Ronan and Pugh nominations were far from a sure thing. But endless thinkpieces about the sexism around Little Women probably scared voters into doubling down. Ironically, at the expense of Lopez, Lupita and others! The feminist Little Women drumbeat ultimately made the nominations...whiter.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJF

Following up my last comment, imagine a 4/5 long time gone welcome back supporting actress! Like Bates + 3. Oh how one wishes. Or you know, a single Asian actress would be better.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterBrick

Only one earlier comment on this - how does the phenomenal editing job done to make "1917" look like a single take manage to miss a nomination for Best Editing?

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCarl

Rocketman should have been nominated for Costume Design.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Snubbing J-Lo is disgusting. Is one of the best characters of the year. A woman in total power of her body and her mind.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Y'all,

We are living in a world where fucking BREAKTHROUGH (!) has an Oscar nomination and HUSTLERS and THE FAREWELL have zero (!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The end is near.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

100% agree, JF. A large portion of the Academy is very stodgy in their tastes and you end up with a roster of noms like the ones announced this AM. Lupita Nyongo was robbed, as was Toni Collette last year. A shame.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRob

Interesting that the two films that currently seem like the frontrunners—1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood—were both snubbed in Best Film Editing. I don’t think it’ll hurt either of them too much, but it is worth noting anyway.

The nominations overall are at best uninspired and at worst a huge missed opportunity to spread the wealth in what was honestly a really strong year for movies.

But I suppose it’s at least somewhat exciting that there are five movies with a real chance of winning Best Picture, which granted will probably change once the guilds have their say, but I can’t remember the last time there were this many actual contenders this late into the race. The most exciting prospect to me is that it’s actually possible Parasite could win depending on how the guilds and BAFTA turn out (so happy it got in for Editing and Production Design).

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterEdwin

Let it be known that the Oscars only like black women if they are playing slaves. Disgraceful.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMe

“To me the snub pattern has more to do with genre/release/box office than diversity per se.”

Oh, yeah! It’s pure coincidence that actors of color in more deserving performances and vehicles were snubbed in favor of their white counterparts that cruised to nominations. Also purely coincidence that the genres favored by the Oscars (like biopics, war dramas etc.) rarely feature PoC!

"I mean, look at Erivo—she coasted to a nomination. I don’t see her as a token diversity nominee OR someone the film community feels passionate about this year. She just proves that Oscar loves a crusty, paint-by-numbers biopic...”

Just say slaves and go.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

Robbie getting in for Bombshell is genuinely baffling. Like that performance is legitimately bad.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterLC

Yes, these nominations are a bit underwhelming, with hardly any surprises. But it's still Oscar nomination day, people! Cheer up! We can still have our favourites, no matter what.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterEdward L.

What a weird set of nominees. They really seem to be into their throwbacks in general, but they are not about those movie stars. I feel genuinely sad for Lopez, she really wanted it and really seemed to appreciate having a moment where she was being recognized for her craft (on top of it just being a masterful star turn). Resumes shouldn't be barriers to nominations when your work is among the best of the year, so when critics are touting Lopez and Adam Sandler, why shouldn't they have the same consideration others get? If we're punishing actors for bad films and cash grabs, Anthony Hopkins wouldn't ever be nominated again.

Maybe the underwhelming nominees will lead to some interesting or least surprising winners. Is Saoirse Ronan a threat for Actress? What film will end up benefitting most from the preferential voting system? This thing is going six rounds, minimum. Can Joker actually win? Whatever else it may be for some, it is a very successful/well made film that seems to have rallied a great deal of support around it. It would definitely be one of the most controversial and debated winners of all time, and maybe that's just the kind of thing the stodgy old Academy needs to stir up.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterVal

man the Academy REALLY hates Beyonce.

First Dreamgirls, now her Lion King song? :-(

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMallinckrodt

Mallinclrodt - It’s not just the Oscars; it’s all the award shows. Because they are what? Say it with me... predominately white institutions. A mediocre Beck album over BEYONCÉ, 25 over Lemonade, Amy Schumer’s horrible standup show over Lemonade, Carpool fucking Karaoke over HOMECOMING and the list goes on and on...

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

Val - Yes, I do think Joker has an actual shot at winning Best Picture. It’ll be hard for it to become an actual frontrunner since it’s not nominated for the DGA or SAG Ensemble awards, but I legitimately think it’s a real threat to win the PGA, and that alone would make it a serious contender. As for it being the kind of controversy/debate the Oscars need to regenerate interest in the show, it absolutely would be one of the most debated winners in history, but I don’t think the type of controversy that would stir up would benefit the Academy at all. It’d get people talking, but I think overall it would hurt the Academy’s image (even more than it’s already been hurt by the lack of diversity year after year) to award Best Picture to Joker.

And I do think it’s possible it wins.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterEdwin

Jojo Rabbit for Best Pic? Got an editing nod. Preferential voting makes it possible even without Directing nod.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterParanoid Android

Sad:
Atlantics missing out in International Film
Song missing out in supporting actor
JLo getting snubbed
So many noms for Jo Jo Rabbit
Lupita missing out in Best Actress
The Farewell getting shutout
No women directors

Happy:
Parasite with 6 nominations including editing!
Bandaras got in at Best Actor!
No nominations for Rocketman

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAndre

A24 had such a great year and only 1 nomination...they really need to work on their campaigning.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAndre

Hustlers shut out! So happy about! Writer/director blew it. Acting was okay but not deserving of recognition. Marketing team made that movie.

Cheering for either 1917 or Jo Jo Rabbit (but still need to see Parasite).

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJosh

I think it’s easy to say the academy is being stodgy when it comes to Lupita. However, the same academy in the same year nominated Phoenix and Joker leads the nominations count.

I think it’s important to consider who and on what the academy is willing to take a risk on.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

Happy:
- Just one nod for Rocketman. Yes, It was bit better than that disaster called Bohemian Rhapsody last year. Giving four Oscars to that pile a junk is the greatest travesty I've ever seen after following the Oscars since 1984. A simple song nomination is more than enough for Rocketman.
- Academy is not afraid to give Netfilx films nominations.
- Parasite for picture and director.
- Florence Pugh
- J'ai perdu mon corps as animated feature
- Snubbing JLo. The most overrated film and performance of the year imho. Not bad, but completely overrated during other awards.

Sad:
- Kathy Bates
- Snubbing Portrait de la jeune fille en feu for director, actress, supporting actress and cinematography
- No Baumbach and/or Gerwin as director. (Philips, Tarantino and Mendes could have easily been replaced by Sciamma, Gerwin and Baumbach. Joker and OUATIH were solidly directed but nothing extremely noteworthy as how they were directed. 1917 is more the Roger Deakins Show than the Sam Mendes Show.)
- No art direction nod for Knives Out.
- And my biggest disappointed this whole season, no love for Florence Pugh in Midsommar and its cinemathography anywhere.
- No nomination for Song Kang-ho, although it was also leading performance. So I get it compared to the heavy-weights that are in now.
- Cynthia Erivo nominated for an extremely weak film
- Totally snubbing The Farewell including best supporting actress

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRalph

thrilled for the LITTLE WOMEN noms though i did feel it deserved more. just to think, a week ago i really thought we’d have a majority actor of color lineup in best actress (3 of 5 legitimate possibilities there). and i thought we could even get three parasite supporting nominations if they went full de taviera surprise. ampas ain’t gonna change that fast... smdh.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

Beyaccount...are you the other "Me"?

Lol, stop whining. You're a Beyonce fan and you're talking about representing quality work? Celebrity bullshit. And you disregard a thought-out and thoughtful response like that to say wah?

Val; absolutely terrific call-out of Anthony Hopkins. He's already considered a legend so when he spends the best part of the new century going for the cash grab, he can get away with it (not agreeing he should). Travolta in same camp but not quite; he's somewhere between Hopkins and Lopez, tho closer to Hopkins. Don't be surprised that, if he does something decent again, he may get recognition.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Why would anyone be sad Beyonce got nothing, those Lion King songs don't hold a candle to the 1994 versions.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Beyoncé getting consideration as a real artist is really scary and a lot scarier than the lack of love for diversity. She's not the poster child; she's a celebrity.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMe

My favourite nomination was Antonio Banderas. I was so happy when it was announced.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRobMiles

We called them singers when I was growing up now everyones an Artist it's just laughable.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

I just don't believe that actors nominate actors, cinematographers nominate cinematographers etc. considering that Joker was nominated for costume design (WHAT?) among other nominations. If would be like that the number of pictures nominated would be bigger and the diversity richer.

That's why i find Oscars boring and Is the reason I haven't watched the show since 2007

What i really I'm waiting is the Film Bitch awards. When you're gonna start to publish the nominations?

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCésar Gaytán

J-Lo's snub angers me to NO END! They did her so damn dirty!!! I'm not watching "Richard Fucking Jewell" ever in my lifetime! All those years the Oscars trotted her out to present Original Score and Song, and for what? For POC representation?

MESSAGE TO J-LO: Snub every invitation the Academy offers to present their white people only trophies, kill it at the Super Bowl halftime show next month, and bang A-Rod all during the Oscars telecast! Get your "Big O" the old-fashioned way, hunty! Ur welcome.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDorian

Sucks that J-Lo and Eddie Murphy didn't get nominated but also Greta Gerwig not getting Best Director is fucking bullshit. The lack of love for Avengers: Endgame is also upsetting as that was a film that is better than it should've been.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

I don't think Cynthia Erivo coasted to anything. She earned that nomination. Beyond the acting, she did things physically and vocally that I can't imagine any other actor doing more convincingly or better. I can't say that of everyone else in the acting categories. Yes, she is better than her movie, but so is Phoenix and that doesn't seem to be stopping him from winning.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

France now passes Japan with most foreign-language best animated feature nominations:
The Triplets of Belleville
Ernest & Celestine
Persepolis
The Illusionist
A Cat in Paris
My Life as a Zucchini
I Lost My Body (being the 7th)

vs Japan's 6:
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
The Wind Rises
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
When Marnie Was There
Mirai

Spain gets it's second this year with Klaus and becomes only third country with multiple nominations.
Chico and Rita was it's lone previous nomination.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterGil

Oops, wrong topic thread.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterGil

Yeah Lopez is an incredible dancer but her music is pure garbage.

And very creepy advice about A-Rod...yes, Alex Rodriguez. He's more #SoWhite than the Oscars this year.

Lol some of you don't know jack, goodness.
