I honestly hate most of these nominations. Like, seriously.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Wow, no JLo!!

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentercb

some of the dullest nominations in living history ...urgghh

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentergizmo

The J.Lo snub is really bad. She will never be a prestige actress, but gave a brilliant performance.

Overall, this list just feels...uninspired.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

9/9 on BP???

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterT-Bone

Wow, they really snubbed all the Asian actors again.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterGolden

Snubbing JLo right away was rough.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermikenewq

TARON EGERTON WAS ROBBED!

"FROZEN 2" WAS ROBBED!

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterFabio Dantas Flappers

Kathy Bates joins the 4-timers club with her fellow 90s Best Actress winners Holly Hunter and Emma Thompson.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Snubbed:
JLo, Rocketman in Costume Design, MakeUp & Sound Mixing
Beyonce (kinda)
Dolemite (Costume)
Once Upon and 1917 in Editing
Apollo 11 (wow!)
Frozen 2
And some shorts (Physics of Sorrow, Fire in Paradise, Stay Close)

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMarcio

No J-lo!!!!!

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

so boring , no asian actors nominated ` farewell/parasite', no Lopez, no left field ( usually deserving ) director nod, just old white guys doing the same thing they have done before, no lupita, no Egerton and does bates need another nom for that performance. After last year and now these noms, urggh my Oscar fever of the last 20 years might be cooling off

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentergizmo

Lopez :(

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterParanoid Android

Man they really have egg on their face (as usual)....

2 nominations for Cynthia Erivo and ScarJo? Really??

Jennifer Lopez snubbed.

The Farewell completely snubbed.

Lupita Nyongo snubbed.

RIDICULOUS

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

No Jlo, no Lupita, no Glasgow :'-(

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterNnnvgnn

So, most perplexing: the almost total absence of "Rocketman?"

W.T.F.

The costumes of "The Irishman" instead? Really? Is it just because of the name Sandy Powell?

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

JUSTICE FOR HUSTLERS

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterThankful4u

Very glad Banderas got a nom, not happy about the omission of Song Kang-ho. I *knew* Little Women would get a best pic nom and I'm glad, but ugh Tood Phillips and no Greta Gerwig for director. Overall feeling is one of disappointment but there have been far worse years. Go Parasite!

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRob

Probably the worst set of nominations the Oscars have had in the past decade. The Farewell being entirely snubbed. The lack of POC across the board in the acting categories. The shut out of even white women from the directing categories. Let the parade of white liberals minority tokenizing Parasite begin I guess.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

Should have had the moderation off for this post at least. Don't let the haters kill the fun of nomination morning. Although my yawns while reading the list made it barely worth waiting for.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Before anybody says it: Antonio Banderas is not a person of color. Thanks.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Kathy Bates - Anthony Hopkins - Todd Phillips - Great.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMelchiades

The Lupita and J.Lo snub feel expected, but pretty awful. It’s also hard to see The Farewell, a beautiful film, snubbed across the board.

These nominations feel like ones that could have been predicted in November based on who studios were pushing. Clearly, the shorter timeline means uninspired nominations.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

Did Jennifer Lopez fully just get shut out?! That is devastating, THE omission I'm already most upset about. What a bleak category

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPeter

Can we all agree where 1917 is supposed to go in an alphabetized list? Putting it as an “N” really screwed with my head.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterGuest SAG Writer

JoJo Rabbit got a love of (technical) love!

So did Joker, both slightly surprising.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMarcio

Disgraceful.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

Can people please be nice in these comments so that we can have the “wait for approval” filter turned back off? This waiting for admin approval before I can read reactions on nominations morning is killing my buzz.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDoug

Here's my theory on the Jennifer Lopez snub:

Ramona is a scheming anti-hero who victimizes old white men for money. This hit too close to home for majority members of the old white male Academy.

They much preferred a sweet, loving supporting mom like Kathy Bates as Richard Jewell's mom.

*sigh*

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commenteradri

No Lopez I knew it was coming.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Wow at the Welcome Back Boys club in supporting actor! Pesci 29 years (since last nom), Pacino 27, Hopkins 22, Hanks 19, and Pitt on a measly 8 (for acting).

Also including this years haul, the only acting nominees to only have one Oscar nomination (Any category) are Pryce, Banderas and Pugh thanks to newbies Scarlett and Erivo snagging two this ceremony.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterBrick

Oh my God...no Jlo ??!!!!.....scarJo with two nominees ??!!! What for ???

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterArturo

So many triple and double nominees!

Triple (writing, directing, producing)

Joon Ho (4x if you count international film)
Tarantino
Mendes
Todd Phillips

Double

Baumbach (writing, producing)
Waititi (writing, producing)
David Heyman (producing 2x)
Johansson (acting 2x)
Cynthia Erivo (acting, song)
Randy Newman

Hey, De Niro made it after all...
So did Bradley Cooper two years in a row...

Bates and Hanks are the only sole nominations in acting!

Other solo nominees:
Knives Out
The Lighthouse
Ad Astra
Avengers
Lion King
Maleficent
Rocketman
Breakthrough (what is this movie?)
Frozen II

There was not one single truly surprising inclusion. Maybe Bates or The Edge of Democracy in Documentary.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterGio

Worst choices in most fifth slots. Sigh. I need a Parasite BP win and a Saoirse Actress upset to make up for this, please.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered Commentereurocheese

AMPAS, you in danger, girl.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMJ

Whaaaat? No Lopez :(

But I love John Cho’s line reading of “I lost my body!” and pronunciation of Korean name. Issa Rae’s “Congratulations to those mem.” is also gold.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRicopolo

OK..

So Joker gets Best Costume Design (no clue as to why).

But it doesn't get Art Direction...wha?

Those steps in the Bronx getting walked on extra for nothing

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Nobody can convince me the movie Kathy Bathes got nominated for is actually real

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJeremy

Banderas was the compromise for the exclusion of Lupita and JLo?

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPP

Happy for Banderas. That's about it. I think the JOKER sweep is telling us something about Hollywood's feelings at the moment. Just not sure what.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDaniella Isaacs

Oh wow Lopez...that was my prediction months ago, but backed off. Tho for the record, while the film was ok (slight thumbs down), Lopez gave a great performance. I think she's lead.

So Joker has better costumes than Rocketman..maybe they just used Elton's old costumes and were ineligible.

🤮

Fake Peggy Sue... you wrote

I only approved this comment because i wanted to respond to it. Why do you have such terrible cognitive dissonance? you are part of the problem, stealing someone else's handle that they've had for years. I know the real Peggy Sue so now I have to check with them every time you post something and it is beyond annoying. PICK YOUR OWN NAME. It's easy. But why try to pretend to be someone else and sully their reputation with off-brand comments? Those of you who have done this have really been the problem.

I dont understand why people do this. I miss the old YEARS when everyone mostly behaved. Have no idea why it changed so suddenly this year.

Doug: 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterSe_bas_tian

It's official: if you're Asian or starring in a horror film, you won't get an Oscar acting nomination no matter how good you are. Shameful.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRon

The most uninspired set of nominees in many, many years. Maybe Parasite will steal the show. At I can see Laura Dern win an Oscar.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

I saw the J.Lo snub coming and it is devastating. I feel so bad for her. She really wanted it. Kathy Bates is a phenomenal actress, but really? For this?

The director's branch has (for the most part) been on a roll the past two years with surprising (but deserving) nominations like Pawlikowski for Cold War and Paul Thomas Anderson for Phantom Thread. The Todd Phillips nod was akin to me rolling my eyes to the back of my head when Mel Gibson was announced as a nominee for Hacksaw Ridge. Ugh.

Lupita Nyong'o fully proves that AMPAS is just NOT INTO HORROR FILMS unless it is a mammoth, cultural zeitgeist hit like Get Out or Silence of the Lambs. With her and Toni Collette for Hereditary, it doesn't matter if you give the best performance of the year - you will be snubbed.

Thrilled for Antonio Banderas. Sad for Taron Egerton.

Did 1917 really need that Screenplay nomination? That would've been the perfect place to reward Lulu Wang for The Farewell.

I blame the seemingly uninspired nominations on the reduced voting time frame. They need to change it back next year. I literally can just see members voting on who they know, because they haven't watched all their screeners. "Anthony Hopkins? Check. Kathy Bates? Check."

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Four films with double digit nominations???? Has that ever happened before in history? I believe not.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRalph

Where is the big change you all keep promising every year with the batch of new voters? This could be easily 1996.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Tbf Anthony Hopkins is terrific in The Two Popes, in a clear lead performance (are the flashbacks the reasoning for Pryce being the designated lead?).

Also, don't feel so bad for Lopez, people. She's a talented actress who has been a shitty music artist and all of what's wrong with celebrity the last 20 years.

January 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMe

I love JLo , but I thought ScarJo deserves both nominations. I haven't seen (or plan to see Richard Jewel) and I love Kathy Bates but I still wish JLo got in over her.
