I couldn't leave this post bare any longer. I'm a bit more of a fan than the readers of this site evidently, but I love all three of these actresses and this film too. Veronica Cartwright is incredible!
I gotta disagree with the indifference to this film by readers of this site. I love the film, it's stars, everything! Surprised at the very least there aren't any comments of dissent, but maybe i just like a film that stirs nothing in the rest of the world?!
@Betsy makes a good point. How about a piece by one of the talented FE writers on Veronica Cartwright? It's really sad that she's never gotten an Oscar nod. Had WITCHES been a bigger hit, that might have been the film that delivered her to the awards circuit.
BTW, one of the great jokes in all of American cinema is casting this most famous movie victim in THE INVASION, making her a victim of the body snatchers in not one but two remakes of Don Siegel's Sci-Fi classic. If they do another remake, I hope they bring her back to be terrorized again as a completely new victim.
It's interesting, in a way, how inconsequential Eastwick is to the careers to any of these actresses, given that it came out just as each of their careers was about to ascend to another level, and yet it had nothing to do with the ascent.
To me that's the clearest sign that George Miller had no idea what he had with this trio; a more clued-in director could have brought out so much more from them - and we'd spend the next 30 years ranking the witches.
Mike -- hmmm, i'd argue that it had something to do with their ascension because it was a big hit (top ten of its year) thus giving the studios confidence in their drawing powers. Before then, none of them had headlined a big hit, except Cher (with MASK).
of course maybe you're right though because Sarandon and Pfeiffer would both have hits the following year (and were probably already cast before this) and Moonstruck was so fast on the heels of Witches that Witches gets eclipsed in the Cher story.
This is where my love for all 3 started,it was one of the first grown up films I rented.
Finally!! Damn with writers from so many timezones at TFE it's strange that something as easy as cursory glancing and approving comments to be shown takes so long. Editorial privileges given to diffent timezone writers please Nathaniel, you're harshing the vibe worse than the overblown "bad apples".
I love this movie!! Veronica deserved a BSA nomination. Love Sarandon in this as well.
I love everyone in this movie, and yet, when I saw it back in 1987 or so, I didn't like it. Definitely needs a re-watch.
I really love this movie and it's cast! Hopefully Michelle will be joining her co-stars as an Oscar winner soon. Veronica Cartwright is also fantastic and maybe the film's stealth MVP?
