93rd Academy Awards. The Winners List.

We'll have a few days of post-mortems here at TFE to discuss everything about the 93rd Oscar ceremony, but due to second vaccine sickness (we barely made it through the ceremony and not finishing it would have been a first since like 1989 so barrelled through in bathrobe with tylenol and a jug of water close by). How'd you fare on your predictions? I've marked what we got wrong and right below. Nomadland was the big winner but it won just 3 Oscars (Picture, Director, Actress). Trial of the Chicago 7 was the only Best Picture nominee to go home emptyhanded so the mistakes you see in the results are mostly due to pessimistic predictions that it would win two Oscars.

I didn't make any predictions but.... that whole Oscars presentation was fucking bullshit.
I was doing so well out of the gate, but ended up missing EIGHT (actor, actress, editing, cinematography, documentary, documentary short, live action short, song). Yikes.
But I loved the presentation. Perfect for emerging from a pandemic.
They really built the show around Chadwick Boseman winning only for Anthony Hopkins winning instead...what an anticlimax that was

I'm seriously amused that Hopkins didn't even bother to show up. Sad trombone ending, though the award was deserved.
Did decently in predix, though whiffed on actor (I did note Hopkins as a possible upset), actress, cinematography, song, and doc short.
Anyway, yay for Youn Yuh-jung, Chloe Zhao, and Nomadland! And Trial of the Chicago 7 going home empty-handed!
I honestly almost feel bad for Anthony Hopkins because through absolutely no fault of his own, it looks based on most reactions that this surprising yet totally deserved win will probably go down as a notoriously anticlimactic—if not altogether disappointing—moment in Oscar history given how much they were clearly building the end of the show around the assumption that Chadwick was winning a posthumous Oscar.
Pleased with the winners overall, but the ceremony itself felt very cheap and tacky. I know circumstances being what they are forced them into a corner, but they couldn't quite pull off whatever they were going for.
I really can’t believe 104 year old legend Olivia de Havilland was relegated to a split second mention on the IN MEMORIAM segment. Wtf was that?!
What the hell was Frances' speech about? She looked every inch uninterested to win as if she were reluctant to accept the award. Mulligan would have been a more grateful winner. Heck, I'm sure the rest would have been too.
I’m just glad Andra Day didn’t win. She came across as so cocky and arrogant during that song quiz segment.
I'm glad that this ceremony should at last kill the annoying misconception that some people have that the ceremony's producers look at the winners in advance, because they were clearly assuming that Boseman would win by putting Best Actor last.
I’d kill to see the vote totals in best actor and actress! lol. I bet Chadwick lost by single digits!
It’s an interesting feeling to be really incredibly disappointed in McDormand’s win despite her performance being my personal favourite.
I think it’s the Three Billboards of it all which sullies this historic 3rd Best Actress Oscar for me. This probably makes no sense but hey.
Weird that I learned that Kim Ki-Duk died through the memoriam. I'm surprised he was even included.

I believe Sir Anthony Hopkins now has the third-largest gap between acting wins in Oscar history, after Helen Hayes (1931-1970) and Katharine Hepburn (1933-1967).
Got 17 out of 23 which is not great. Of course I got all the shorts categories correct though. Go figure.
I missed 7 but that's because I got shocked by the last two of the night (I picked Boseman and Day to win).
But that was still the best I have done in last few years
Feel better! I had my dose 2 sick day yesterday - spent the entire day on the couch with Fanny and Alexander. My first viewing - half dead and sickly was a weird way to experience it.
Anyway, greatly missed clips from the films! That was such a bad decision. The shifting of categories at the end was a huge mistake, but I was rooting for Anthony Hopkins so mixed emotions. I did like that it seemed they gave most of the speeches more time than usual. If you're going to cut things like clips and best original song, it's great to use that on more time for speeches
All truly great performances in four categories win! A tiring season of actors playing overdue narratives and all kinds of cards finally comes to the end. Maybe next time devote all the energy and strength on the actual film performance rather than nonstop awards campaigning?!

There's no real drama in those last presentations - Twitter is overreacting, as always. Anthony Hopkins' win will go down as one of the most deserved in history. In spite of a weak campaign, he managed to win based on the power of his indelible performance. Congrats to the legendary actor !
Sad that Francis wins 3/6 and Meryl wins 3/21.
If nothing else, I'm thrilled Frances is now a 4-time Oscar winner.. Can't say the same about Meryl (evil grin)
I'm thrilled for Sir Anthony Hopkins, he really gave the best male lead performance of the year and in a very demanding role. Mc Dormand was outstanding in Nomadland - probably her best performance to date - but her win to me was completely unnecessary , particularly with 4 great alternative choices on the list (i would personally have voted for Carey Mulligan , but anyone on the lineup would have made a worthy winner). Once again, sad for Glenn Close but happy for Youn = loved her speech and the way she paid tribute to Glenn.
I was grateful that this ceremony was not the dud that others had been. If anything, the speeches at the beginning felt a bit too long and I would've liked just a few more clips. But they did a nice job of giving us some peek behind some of the nominees, especially in the craft categories, and it let me imagine what this might have been like in the very, very early days. Hopkins was a great surprise and I hope it encourages others to see that film.
Most disappointed in the rushed In Memorial and terrible song choice for it, and also the lack of clips for the visual categories like visual effects.
The order of awards was wierd, doing director in the first hour and having BP go third from last is just stupid, it always goes last. They wanted Chadwick moment at the end but, why are were they trying to make the whole ceremony about him, it should be about the movies not one person above them. Also Seen Connery should have been last in the memorial, more of an impact in movies and a greater legend. Overall a disappointing/dull show, outside of Youn's speech which was the biggest highlight.

Imma be honest, Hopkins' win would've been less of a "huh?" if they didn't put Actor as the last catagory.
Oh my God, Mark. Please look up the definition of the word "sad". I don't think it entails that type of scenario. "I got three pieces of chocolate cake from a table that had 21 on them, and I am sad because she got three pieces of cake from a table of 6. And forget anyone who hasn't got a piece of chocolate cake."
I think both actresses are grateful for what they have, and maybe not even about Oscars.
Question: do you think if they hadn’t consolidated sound mixing and sound editing into one general Best Sound category this year, Sound of Metal would have won both sound categories and would therefore have tied with Nomadland for most wins this year?
I personally loved the ceremony and, given the circumstances, thought they really pulled it off. It was weird to do Best Actor last (especially now with the upset) but Hopkins was phenomenal and I'm just SO thrilled for Nomadland.
I know I'm the resident Streep agnostic/antagonist -- but I'm genuinely concerned for her sense of self at the moment. McDormand earned 3 Lead wins so easily. From less than a handful of nods compared to Meryl. Just as it is violent for Close to receive nods when voters have no intentions of making her happen -- this can't sit well with Streep.
If anything McDormand’s win tonight makes it easier to reward Streep her 4th in the future.
I did feel bad for Mulligan and Davis.
Memoriam segment clips did go mostly fast but maybe they got more individuals in the limited time. Rhonda Fleming was in, Linda Manz, Conchata Farrell, Kelly Preston also, 007's Sean Connery, Diana Rigg, but no Honor Blackman nor Jessica Walter (maybe she's more for TV, but I think of her always for "Play Misty For Me").
Everyone seems to be forget about Glenn Close dancing and endearing herself to the voting people. So maybe she'll win a competitive Oscar some day? She saved the night for me lol
I keep thinking that McDormand winning, not Mulligan, will foster a future Oscar when Mulligan will win for a lesser performance (maybe a biopic or period costume drama), and robbing another deserving winner.

I thought the ceremony was pretty good given the unprecedented conditions. I would love for them to get more adventurous in their staging of the ceremony - not every participant needs to be in the same room, especially if that room is that tacky barn of a mall movie theater the Dolby. And I love that they shook up the order, and even more pleased that it ended on such a bizarre moment. I like my Oscars unpredictable. I will remember Hopkins' win for a very long time to come. I feel like the Oscar producers are in a damned-if-you-do/damned-if-you-don't situation: stick to the established traditions and you get called boring; change up the script and people get upset. Either way, Twitter will find SOMETHING to hate.
And as a Glenn Close stan, I am so glad she didn't win this year. And if she ends up getting an honorary award, she'll be in the company of Gena Rowlands, Cicely Tyson, and Angela Lansbury.

I know is too much to ask for but it would be great if they included international talents like Kim Ki-Duk and Michel Piccoli they would also have included in the In Memorian to Gabriel Retes and Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, two essential directors that any mexican who calls to itself cinephile must to know.
GLENN CLOSE is the only winner of the night for me.
She just won a whole new legion of fans with that moment alone.

They both have three for acting, and Streep has never produced a theatrical motion picture. The problem is McDormand's three for leading actress, which just doesn't sit well with me, no matter how great she is.
Boseman was robbed, Davis too.
All three shorts categories went to the weakest film nominated! Argh!

I've felt from the beginning Boseman was a weak frontrunner.
I am shocked that they gave McDormand Oscar #3 for acting, knowing she'd get one for Producing that night, too. In retrospect, I think the two Black women playing real Blues singers ate into each others' support, and Carey Mulligan taking on the Variety critic for sexism--when his review clearly wasn't--might have hurt her. Hey, little things matter when it's a four way horserace. Didn't one of the Price Waterhouse people once admit in an interview that the results are very often closer than most people imagine? I feel there was some vague statement like that a few years back.
MANK winning Best Cinematography? Ugh. It would have been nice to have an all POC winners roster for acting, not because I'm so PC but because once you narrow it down to the best three or four it's really gonna be about other things and we might as well admit that. Still, I would have voted for Ahmed over Boseman. I'm not particularly upset that Hopkins won. He deserves to be in the two timers club. He was magnificent. I also think Davis deserved to be in the two timers club before McDormand, but at the end of the day, it's just an awards show. I loved the train station set, though.
Hopkins winning is one of THE best decisions the Academy has made in a long time
With George Floyd victory last week, I bet the producers decided to switch Best Actress and Best Actor the last two expecting (Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman) to win to top it off. Now, two white winners wining back to back instead (deserving but still), the message is all fucked up. In the end, they look like damned fools and opportunistic lmao.
Apparantly most people get second shot sickness, whether they're old, young, healthy or HIV Positive. Get well soon and hope you enjoyed a stellar Oscar results!
The producers r expecting Chadwick to win, and moving it to the last award to capitalize on the sentimentality, and.........it backfires. As many of u had mentioned, the last award presented is alws Best Picture for a reason!!
As much as McDormand is well-loved & respected in the Industry, three LEAD actress is a bit much, considering the talents in her category. Any of the other four actresses deserves it MORE than her!!
C'mon, I dun believe the voters r not aware tt she is a co-producer on Nomadland and is gonna win Best Picture. Giving her TWO Oscars in one night when Mulligan, Davis, Day & Kirby r thr to choose from is imo, ridiculous!!! She is not even the frontrunner like 3 yrs ago!

I know there are people who are going to say the Oscars are racist because they didn't give Boseman the Oscar. That's B.S. He just wasn't as good as Hopkins and was really no better than Ahmed. But Viola Davis is as good as Meryl Streep all the time and better than Frances McDormand. That SHE lost her #2 so McDormand could get #3, actually #4, seems more disturbing in that regard.
