Box Office: "Wakanda Forever" Domination
By Ben Miller
To the surprise of absolutely no one, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ruled the weekend box office with a $181 million opening. Believe it or not, that's second-best on the year to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel knows how to make money. The second Black Panther entry arrived to good reviews (84% on Rotten Tomatoes) and zero counterprogramming. It also added another $150 million internationally. The film is expected to be the number two grossing film of the year in a few weeks (behind Top Gun: Maverick).

On the limited side, only Steven Spielberg tried to take on the Marvel machine, and it turned out pretty well. His autobiographical film The Fabelmans only played on four screens but still managed over $160k. The per theater average matches Wakanda Forever with over $40k.
The MCU is expected to dominated again next weekend. The acclaimed She Said releases wide as well as some platforming limited releases like The Menu, The Inspection, and Bones and All.
What did you see this weekend? Though I didn't see Wakanda Forever, I was able to take in the aforementioned Bones and All, while also finally catching up to Triangle of Sadness.

I saw Banshees of Inisherin and loved it. I would be happy if Farrell and Gleeson took home a lot of awards this season, they were both great.
I also watched Weird on the Roku Channel and didn't laugh once. I also felt icky about watching a movie that made Madonna and Michael Jackson into villains for the sake of a joke.
my old school - fascinating story but the shared experience of remembering it is what makes this doco really sing. the ‘south pacific’ recollection is fascinating. loved it
weird: the al yankovic story - i just went with the sheer nuttiness of it all and thoroughly enjoyed it
I saw the following
Barbarian an icky horror that made me hide behind my hands a few times
Run Sweetheart Run starts off well but gets wilder and wilder the further it goes on.
The Naked Edge Deborah Kerr 61 whodunnit thriller quite enjoyable
The Morning After the film that gave us a weird Fonda 7th Oscar nomination
See How They Run okay but seemed underpowered
Marie 1985 true story Sissy Spacek her usual solid self
Marriage Italian Style Sophia deserved that Oscar nomination
Two for the Road a Hepburn movie that didn't click with me
par -- I keep meaning to watch that (bu tkeep not watching it) -- i mean WEIRD
mr ripley -- YOU WERE BUSY
ben -- ooh, dying to hear what you thought of TRIANGLE OF SADNESS
everyone --i'm sorry i didn't review BLACK PANTHER. I've been a mess lately. Hoping to get back on the horse soon.
I saw Wakanda Forever. Imagery, imagination, and spectacle, wow.
Angela Bassett was magisterial, Tenoch Huerta was magnetic. Lupita Nyong’o is so beautiful in photos that I forget she is even lovelier onscreen, with such screen presence, warm and intelligent.
There were plot points that I hadn’t expected and surprised me. It’s always impressive to pull that off in the context of a Marvel movie.
A couple of re-watches in a Mickey Mouse short and Police Story 2 and 2 first-timers in a short film by Jean-Pierre Melville and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with the latter in Dolby ATMOS. It is a great film that really explore the ugliness of colonialism and world politics and why it is never a good idea to share resources with other countries knowing that they will fuck things up.
In theaters, I saw BLACK PANTHER 2 like everyone else did, but I also checked out TRIANGLE OF SADNESS finally and randomly UTAMA (Bolivia's Oscar submission). I contain multitudes.
People who complain there's only superhero films out there... like, keep looking. There's always something else out there!
I saw Decision to Leave and feel bamboozled because, while it had some nice moments, it really wasn't that good. Can no one land the plane in under 2 hours because that movie was 45 minutes too long. That being said, I cannot stop thinking about Tang Wei in that blue coat at the end.
I caught a sneak of The Fabelmans. Really well put together, which is to be expected from Spielberg. But gosh, it's not that interesting and the script has some clunky cringy dialogue. And while I get that Michelle Williams is winning Best Actress, and yay for her, it's a shame because I found her performance to be really uneven (she has one scene where she just completely missed the mark for me). She's been much better in so many other things. Gabriel LaBelle and Paul Dano were the MVPs for me.
@Nathaniel
I went into Triangle of Sadness ready to hate it. Wasn't feeling the model part. Was mostly on-board with the ship. Got all-the-way on-board with the island.
I was a big fan of De Leon and Harrelson, but was surprised how much I loved Dean.
4.0/5.0
Had a pretty full movie week for a delightful change!
Bardo -- hated it. (and I've liked all of Inarritu's past work, so I did not go in ready to hate watch like most seem to have!)
Navalny - that scene on the phone is about as riveting as real time docs get
Holy Spider - love a thriller that has a lot more to say about society
Deep Water - okay, the story doesn't hold up in the in, but Ben is so cute
Utama - loved it -- see it on a big screen for the great cinematography and topography and because it is slow but will reward you if you are not on your phone!
Descendant -- loved
Poppy Field -- had higher hopes for a gay romanian film, but they are still in the we can make gay art if it is self-loathing phase of gay liberation
GDT's Pinocchio -- wonderful animation and updates to the story, though Pinocchio as a character is wildly uneven
FIrebird - quite standard, really
Anais in Love - movie of the week! So whimsical and French in the best way.
Aline -- enjoyed since I love Celine, but it should have been more audacious
Wakanda Forever -- did a great job paying tribute to Chadwick, and Bassett is QUEEN.
