What did you see this weekend? 'Uncharted' and 'Dog' were popular

Tom Holland and Channing Tatum both proved continued drawing power this weekend as the video game adaptation Uncharted opened strong with $51 million over the long weekend and the original comedy Dog opened to $17 million. Meanwhile international feature Oscar nominees Worst Person in the World and Drive My Car continued their arthouse dominance. Full "estimates" chart after the jump...

Despite a lack of stars, the new werewolf horror film with the ultra-generic title Cursed performed decently opening wide to $2 million. Overall the weekend was a hopeful sign that people are starting to go back to the movies. Maybe the summer season will be strong?
One interesting note that you don't see on the top ten charts here is that Encanto, which is already streaming added over a 1000 theaters back in its 13th weekend in the hopes of inching towards $100 million domestic. It won't get there given the Disney+ factor (it's currently at $94.8 and this long holiday weekend didn't move the needle much with only an extra $400k) but we are confident that it would have blossomed into a genuine theatrical blockbuster if Disney weren't so intent on cutting their theatrical profits off at the knees with rushed streaming releases. Remember that while Frozen opened big on a holiday it still took it a month or so before it was clear that it was going to have major legs with very small drops each week.
Next week's box office will probably be a little slower since the movies, like Cyrano and Studio 666, have a lower profile than this weekend's newbies.
What did you see? I went to Jackass Forever with friends (so much fun) and then spent the weekend watching 1957 movies for a podcast appearance.

Middle of Nowhere by Ava DuVernay and a short film on MUBI by Ruben Ostlund.
Finally saw Parallel Mothers, and I loved it, like I knew I would. It amuses me that Colman is nominated the same year as Cruz. Their motherly vibes are so different.
I saw The Worst Person in the World and unsurprisingly loved it. What a talent Reinata Reinsve is!
I saw The Worst Person in the World, which I loved, but would have loved even more if the last half hour had been a little more restrained and Trier hadn't piled on the poignancy in scene after scene after scene. He really milks it. It's still in my tope five of the year. But I have a criticism of the way the actors have been categorized. Anders Danielsen Lie (wow, he was even dreamier than I remembered) is a lead as far as I'm concerned. Herbert Nordrum, who is also brilliant, should be considered the Supporting Actor of the film. Reinsve is, of course, superb.
I saw Spencer, which I liked better than I thought I would - it's not Jackie, but that film is a towering masterpiece, so expecting a repeat is ridiculous. My vote would still be for Cruz for Best Actress, but I haven't seen all 5 of the nominees yet, and I'm glad Stewart was nominated. I really think Timothy Spall and the costumes should have been nominated also.
I also saw Cruella. Fabulous costumes, good makeup and hair. Emma Thompson is breathtakingly good. The film overall was barely tolerable - and way too long.
Amy - funny I had a similar reaction to Danielsen Lie's category placement, but had that thought toward the end of the film where he has significant screen time. I think it's borderline and a case could be made either way. He'd make my list in either category this year - sensational work. Almost stole MVP honors from Reinsve (almost ;))
I watched When a Woman Ascends the Stairs and Wong Kar-Wai's short film The Hand, both of which were brilliant.
I also finished Inventing Anna, which was a lot of fun. I appreciate Shonda's casting acumen - so many great character actors and new faces are used well.
Certainly gives new meaning to the power of the Dog...
... I had to.

If Tatum and Cumberbatch don’t present something together (Best Animated Feature?) it will be a missed opportunity.
I finally caught up with a few Oscar hopefuls: NIGHTMARE ALLEY (finally found the horse I want to back this year - it's excellent) and SPENCER (I fall into the positive camp, and had a great debate with one of the people I saw it with who went the other way). Also saw THE 355 (not as bad as many are making it out to be - how can a movie with Kruger, Cruz, Nyong'o and Chastain EVER be that bad?), DEATH ON THE NILE (good silly fun) and BENEDETTA (wow).

Although I had read descriptions, I hadn’t realized how much of an actor’s piece this was (which I liked). Sonya’s wonderful speech in sign language capped off the actorly satisfaction of “And it was all worth it”.
“The Worst Person in the World”
I liked the reviewer who compared this to director Eric Rohmer’s series of “moral tales” and “comedies and proverbs”. I would classify this as a Cautionary Tale.
“The 355”
Such a great cast deserved a better script. Maybe it will do better on streaming, as it compares favourably to “Red Notice”.

I’d forgotten how much a popcorn movie requires actual popcorn.
I’d only seen the first 2 of this series of 8 (?) films. Tom, Zendaya, Jacob, Marisa, and Jon are all charming. A great core cast, no wonder it has so many fans.
Willem, Alfred, and even Tobey, reminded us how good and solid they were. Andrew Garfield’s interpretation seemed a bit of a misstep, but who knows, I never saw his movies.
The Oscar nominee who impressed was Benedict Cumberbatch with 2 distinct interesting characters, Dr. Strange and his “Power of the Dog” character.
