2 Gays, 1 Remake: Drive My Car

Riding the comedown from the Oscars, Cláudio Alves and Nick Taylor speculate on the remake potential of Best International Film winner, Drive My Car.

CLÁUDIO: April Fools' Day is always a frustrating time to be on Twitter. From nobodies to reputable sources, countless accounts share announcements of fake projects, preposterous stuff that nonetheless feels plausible in our current paradigm. One of those jokey posts reported an American remake of Drive My Car. Though false it rings true; "Foreign" awards season juggernauts are often retrofitted for Hollywood versions. Though they haven't yet seen the light of day, Toni Erdmann, Parasite, and Another Round are all to be remade as English-language features and series.

And yet, outrage couldn't last when someone mentioned a brilliant idea – Oscar Isaac in the Hidetoshi Nishijima role! Maybe because I love great acting, perhaps because I like to imagine Isaac being all sad and hot, my curiosity was piqued. As ever, when the matters of sexy hunks and dream castings arise, I had no choice but to turn to my dear friend Nick Taylor…

How Have International Features Fared in Oscar Screenplay Categories?

By: Christopher James

In a banner year for International cinema, can "The Worst Person in the World" or "Drive My Car" win a Screenplay Oscar? As was discussed in the recent Screenplay Oscar Volley, there is the potential for there to be two international feature winners in Adapted and Original Screenplay this year. Best Picture nominee Drive My Car had an incredibly strong showing on nomination morning, and Adapted Screenplay could be the place where the Oscars chooses to honor writer/director Ryusuke Hamaguchi. If it wins, it will be the first international feature to win Best Adapted Screenplay.

On the Original Screenplay front, Joaquim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World hopes to be a surprise upset. The comedy-drama from Norway may not be in Best Picture, but it has amassed a strong art house following and grown steadily since its opening last month.

Do these movies actually have a shot though? Let’s take a look at the track record for International Feature in the Screenplay categories.

Oscar Volley: Split predictions in Adapted and Original Screenplay!

Team Experience is discussing the various Oscar categories. Here's Matt St. Clair, Christopher James, Lynn Lee and Josh Bierman discussing the screenplays.

MATT ST. CLAIR: Hello all. So, in Best Adapted Screenplay, I think that it remains Jane Campion's to lose but Maggie Gyllenhaal could be The Lost Daughter's sole win here instead, given the clear passion it has. What do you guys think?

CHRISTOPHER JAMES: Thanks for kicking us off, Matt! As in Best Picture, The Power of the Dog is the one to beat. I still think it will ultimately be the big winner of the night, but it is vulnerable...

Best Picture, Black-and-White Edition

by Cláudio Alves

Ever since NEON released a black-and-white version of Parasite during the awards season's peak, we've begun a tradition here at The Film Experience of looking the Best Picture nominees each year, and trying to imagine what they'd look like devoid of color. Naturally, we'll never know that since making a black-and-white movie is much more complex than simply turning the saturation to zero. Matters of design and lighting are involved, as are other elements of pre and post-production. Still, it's fun to peruse movies in search of striking imagery. But of course, beyond personal amusement, there's another component to this exercise…

It's a clean sweep for "Drive My Car" at the Japan Academy Awards

Hidetoshi Nishijima accepting BEST ACTOR for "Drive My Car"

The 45th annual Japan Academy Awards were held last night (aka hours ago -- time differences are confusing!) in Tokyo. 濱口 竜介's Oscar-nominated Drive My Car was honored in all of its categories. The winners are after the jump...
