The next Oscar Night will be March 12th, 2023

We finally have the dates for next Oscar season. Things aren't quite back to normal since we're still not back in early February (which the Academy had been working towards for years, finally getting there the year of Parasite) but at least it's a bit earlier than last season.

Governors Awards (Honorary Oscars) - Saturday, November 19th, 2022
Voting on Categories with Shortlists - December 12th through the 15th, 2022
Shortlists Announcements - Wednesday, December 21st, 2022
Nomination Voting - January 12th through the 17th, 2023
Nominations Announced - Tuesday January 24th, 2023
Nominee Luncheon - Monday, Febriuary 13th, 2023
Final Oscar Voting - March 2nd through the 7th, 2023
95th Annual Academy Awards - Sunday, March 12th, 2023

TRIVIA NOTE: This is the first time ever that Oscar night will be held on March 12th so those of you with March 12th birthdays finally have the ceremony on your birthday. (The dates when the most Oscars throughout history have been held is a tie between March 25th and March 29th each having had five ceremonies.)

We can finally set those countdown clocks. It's just 256 days until Nomination Morning and 303 days until Oscar night.

Having the Oscars on your birthday is not always a great thing - take it from someone who had the Brokeback Mountain/Crash Oscars on their birthday....

If they're smart, they'll lock in someone like Lady Gaga or Lin-Manuel Miranda now as host and hire a producer based on that already-set factor. For years, it seems, they can't get their top choices because people are unavailable by the time an invitation is sent out. I believe there *are* A list stars who would like to do it, maybe not comedians (who have to worry about bombing in front of a billion people), but people who love movies and would take the risk, but they have to be asked before they've signed for something else that month.

Dan H — I kind of think they’re gonna stick with multiple hosts for the foreseeable future. It takes the pressure off any one individual to carry the whole show, plus it allows multiple opportunities to potentially attract more viewers. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Lady Gaga are great picks, and I’ll also throw Dwayne Johnson as another celebrity who is both well liked and charismatic enough to do it well.

Or they could go the other direction and hire Chris Rock…

In 2019, Nathaniel wrote a column suggesting 12 individuals he felt deserved an honorary Oscar. His list included future recipients Liv Ullmann and David Lynch.

A list of deserving possible recipients includes

JEAN HERSHOLT HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Dolly Parton for literacy efforts. Age 76. Since 1995, Parton’s Imagination Library has gifted over 150 million high quality children’s books to kids from birth to age five in the US, England, Ireland, Australia and Canada.

Bette Midler for environmental justice. Age 76. Since 1995, Midler’s New York Restoration Project has successfully insured green space for the city’s most underserved neighborhoods.

HONORARY OSCAR

Director Peter Weir. Age 77. Nominated for Witness, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and Master and Commander: The Far side of the World

Director Zhang Yimou. Age 70. Films nominated for International Film - Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, and Hero.

Actress Jane Alexander. Age 82. Nominated for The Great White Hope, All the President’s Men, Testament and Kramer vs. Kramer.

Actress Glenn Close. Age 75. Nominated for The World According to Garp, The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs, The Wife and Hillbilly Elegy.

Actor Harrison Ford. Age 79. Appeared in Best Picture nominees American Graffiti, The Conversation, Star Wars, Apocalypse Now, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witness, Working Girl, and The Fugitive.

Actor Ed Harris. Age 71. Nominated for Pollock, The Truman Show, Apollo 13 and The Hours.

Actress Marsha Mason. Age 80. Nominated for Cinderella Liberty, The Goodbye Girl, Chapter Two and Only When I Laugh.

I like Finbar's list and would also include the following:

Writer/Director Paul Schrader. Age 75. Nominated for writing First Reformed; wrote Best Picture nominees Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.

Writer/Director Mike Leigh. Age 79. Nominated for for writing and directing Secrets and Lies and Vera Drake and writing Topsy-Turvy, Happy-Go-Lucky, and Another Year.

A few more Honorary Oscar suggestions:

Danny Elfman, just about to turn 69. Four-time Best Original Score nominee, although it seems like he should have been nominated a lot more times than that and definitely should have won by now.

David Cronenberg, age 79. Never nominated for an Oscar in any category, and if that doesn’t change this year with Crimes of the Future, they should start considering him as a potential Honorary Oscar recipient.

This "stick with three" thing is stupid. We used to have one host all the time and, for the most part, they did fine: Hope, Carson, Crystal. Of course that was before social media insanity. But if they picked someone not known as a comedian, as they did with Hugh Jackman (who did a GREAT job), the whole "they're not funny/their jokes sucked and were inappropriate" criticism doesn't factor in. Somebody, and yes, Dwayne Johnson might be that person, has to have the guts to go out there solo and do the gig. They just need to lock them in six months in advance.
