What did you see over the weekend?

by Nathaniel R

Don't Worry Darling opened at #1 which is impressive for two reasons. The first is that the press was of the "what a hot mess" rather than "what a good movie!" variety. The second, as Rob Watson pointed out on twitter, is that this marks the second consecutive weekend where a film directed by a woman starring a woman opened at #1 playing above expectations...

Gender parity in Hollywood has been a hot button topic for a handful of years now but we're beginning to see real results in what kind of movies open and, now, which are successful.

What did you see these past few days? I was dealing with stuff at home so i turned to my comfort food tv which basically means "supernatural YA stuff" and did Season 2 of Fate: The Winx Saga. I also finished the 1951 movie I had left Death of a Salesman and FINALLY recorded the 1951 Supporting Actress Smackdown so that's coming up soon.

Saw DON'T WORRY DARLING (well-directed and Pugh is excellent, but oof that story) and re-watched AVATAR on IMAX. Still visually stunning and a great primer prior to the sequel because hell if I remember too much about it these days.

A few shorts in I Like Life a Lot as well as a couple of Don Hertzfeldt shorts and Moonage Daydream (great film).

The local one-screen independent cinema had the double of BEAST (fun) and NOPE (another good Peele film, and another film where I read about it in many article afterwards, so it keeps on giving).

And also saw Kosovo's entry for the International Film oscar, LOOKING FOR VENERA and, well, let's just say that they won't be any type of threat to any other country this year...

We loved THE WOMAN KING so much.

SIDNEY on AppleTV+ - okay bio of Sidney Poitier, but felt very Oprah-ish (maybe because she's a talking head and an exec producer)

And because gawd knows I love my British film and TV:

ALI & AVA (Amazon) - Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook at the top of their acting game in this sweet love story by Clio Barnard

AM I BEING UNREASONABLE - Daisy May Cooper is sublime
(this one of several excellent new and newish British/New Zealander/Australian/Irish comedy/dark comedy series starring their writers, e.g., Bad Sisters, The Let-Down, The Other One, Alma's Not Normal, Mean Mums, This Way Up, Starstruck, GameFace; I say keep them coming!)

CROSSFIRE - Keeley Hawes is decent in this utterly ridiculous but entertaining thriller series

Not to give Harry Styles premature credit as a "movie star" (he's not at this time) but the saving grace for DWD's box office is surely his ability to get butts in seats.

Can you imagine if she *did* make this movie with Shia LaBoeuf and similar drama/reviews/chaos played out during promotion? It'd be tanking right now. So ultimately I don't think its debut at #1 says anything about Wilde or the appeal of the film, Harry Styles is just a popular guy with rabid fans.

Saw Moonage Daydream and thought it was incredible and I really hope it wins the Oscar. It has to get nominated first though - oh that wacky Documentary branch!

I saw Moonage Daydream, which was fantastic, and Don't Worry Darling, which was not good at all. I also caught up with Bad Sisters on Apple TV Plus and enjoyed it.

BLONDE - A stylish mess with a very good De Armas.

MOONAGE DAYDREAM - A stylish Doc that actually works immersing the viewer into Bowie's career

Also saw Avatar to prepare for the sequel. Last time I had seen it was 2009, so it was almost totally new to me. And still Spectacular to look at, even if the story is a little thin.

I saw “Don’t Worry Darling” with a larger audience than I’ve been in for a while. And no, no one in the audience was making fun of the movie.

Granted, it’s an okay movie rather than a really good one, but it’s stylish and there’s nothing wrong with the direction and there’s nothing wrong with Harry Styles’ acting.

And like everyone else, it’s “Avatar” for me next, which I am strangely excited about.

We can talk about directors indulging in their obsessions, but at least James Cameron’s obsessions lead to technical innovations that become part of a common vocabulary. And he adds a rip roaring, swashbuckling story to it with good characters.

Best thing I watched this weekend was Hap and Leonard on Netflix-binged all 18 episodes.
After all the raves, I saw Barbarian-solid B flick, nothing exceptional.
And Don't Worry Darling. Great looking film that tried to be a clever Stepford Wives and failed hard.
Surprised people are into re-seeing Avatar. I hated that movie. Fool me once...

I watched On the Riviera with Danny Kaye and Gene Tierney. Gene Tierney's outfits are to-die-for, and the two song-and-dance numbers Popo the Puppet and Happy Ending are so weirdly good that they make the film almost watchable.
