First & Last 037 (...and our impatience)

Can you guess the movie from its first and last shot?

I think you know how much I elsker this movie if you've guessed it already. The answer is after the jump...

Yes, that's the Norwegian masterpiece The Worst Person in the World (2021) from Norway's greatest auteur Joachim Trier (Reprise, Thelma, Oslo August 31). It had the terrible luck of being up against Drive My Car in its year at the Oscars or it quite possibly could have given Norway it's first Oscar. I had never noticed until offering up these first and last images that the movie bookends itself with imperfect mirrored shots of Julie (Renate Reinsve). Profile in both, but reversed. She's a new version of herself and it's more than beautifully modulated that her mind is wandering in the first shot and focused at work in the last.

A near-perfect movie and you can stream it on Hulu.

P.S. Renate Reinsve will be back but when? Since Worst Person in the World arrived and exploded she's shot 4 movies, 1 TV series, and has 4 other films in production (one of them a reunion with Joachim Trier!) --some English language and some Norwegian. But nothing has come out yet. Getting impatient!

So good, I almost worry for Trier. He never fails (though Thelma was a little off), but WPITW will be tough to follow up.

This would have gotten my vote for International Feature. I felt on an island all by myself because I wasn’t falling over myself in love with Drive My Car. It was fine…
