Film Bitch Awards: Breakthrough Performers, Small Gem Performances, Memorable Scenes

In a mad race to finish the Film Bitch Awards before the Oscars, we've posted five more categories!  Breakthrough of the Year features rising stars from the US (Stephanie Hsu, Brandon Perea), UK (Bella Ramsey), Finland (Aamu Milonoff), and Mexico (Diego Calva). It's not strictly an acting award (like the others) but more about which new stars we're most eager to see in another picture... immediately.

Best Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role is also up for the scene stealers who do a lot with a very little like Lia Williams who is so self-regarding and droll as the poet Edith Sitwell in Benediction.

Finally the Best Scenes page is in process now featuring Best Opening Scene (Triangle of Sadness "H&M / Balenciaga" has to be there), Best Ending (The Fabelmans horizon line naturally), Credit Sequence (Jackass Forever's dick kaiju terrorizes) and also a Dozen Memorable Scenes that don't fit into the other various scene categories.

Enjoy!

Surprised to not see mention of Chloe East in "The Fabelmans" - was it just too small for a breakthrough, technically too many scenes for limited/cameo? She's wonderful, at any rate.

Is it terrible that Brandon Perea may be my favorite thing about Nope? Thrilled to see him listed here. He's so much fun.

And some others are swell, but to me it's tough to top the opening scene of Tar and the ending scene of Great Freedom. For credits - gotta go with After Yang's family dance competition.

Samantha Morton in Whale gave my favorite performance of the year (Male/Female, Lead/Supporting/Limited/Cameo, what have you).

I’m glad you acknowledged several Babylon scenes. I mostly alone in this but I think it was a much better love/hate letter to cinema than The Fabelmans

Uuuuuugh Nathaniel the final credits of Corsage are golden medal in my list. I also would put a couple of Holy Spider scenes as the best of the year.

Perea is the sexpot of the year

@Amy Camus-agree about Morton in The Whale

Is Samantha Morton really a cameo her 1 scene lasts over 10 minutes.

Great Call on Brandon Perea,Nope has been the most overlooked film of the season.

I could understand that you consider Diego Calva as breakthrough even when his first role was seven years ago, but yes, "Babylon" is his first acting achievement, but Tenoch Huerta? Really?

His real breakthrough performance was in "Nesio" from 2008, since then he have been work in several films and tv series.

I know most people think that Hollywood is the center of the film industry but there is a lot of countries that makes movies and pretend that someone only exists when starts to work in Hollywood is ridiculous.

What infuriates me most about it is the lot of hate he have been received from people of his own country questioning his talent and that doesn't know his previous work and underestimates him precisely for that tendency to be conceive to Hollywood as the only that matters

Is a little disappointing to watch that exists a lot of online sites about films but all of them put the conversation in the same films and not in the rest that really was made from around the world

She Said and Holy Spider could each easily fill the actress in limited/ cameo role alone I think. So many great performances. Does anyone know the actress who plays the woman Zoe Kazan tries to interview outside her mothers front door? She was exceptional, fear, rage frustration in her face with hardly any dialogue. I looked at IMDB and I think maybe it’s Roxanne Hope Radja.

Best Film Bitch Award
Recognition for Samatha Morton in She Said, simply one of the year's best performances.

Most Surprising Snub from Film Bitch Awards
Not even a semi-finalist nod for American Society of Cinematographers first feature film winner Mandy Walker for Elvis. Great list of 11 male cinematographers, though.

Did you see PEARL? End credits really should be on that great list. I still think about it almost everyday (up to and including the tease of the Hollywood sign)

Samantha Morton in SHE SAID >>>> Judd Hirsch in FABLEMANS. Though in Hirsch's defense, Morton in SHE SAID is probably better than at least half of all the Oscar acting nominees this year. Anyways... great pick!

I'm happy/sad to see Stephanie Hsu in Best Breakthrough. Happy, because DUH she knocked it out of the park! But sad since now we know she's not shortlisted for Best Supporting Actress (my pick for the year).

So HOT: Diego Calva & Brandon Perea
