The Guardian Ken Russell was nearly finished with a new screenplay adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, to be made as a risque musical. Will it still be made with a new director?

Empire wonders if paranormal romance Smoke and Bone about an angel and a demon that fall in love will be the next big movie franchise? Have any of you read it?
Inside Movies Deliverance actor Bill McKinney has passed away.
Wipe Your Feet "Watching Melancholia is like..." I love the movie but this is totally LOL.

IndieWire Mike Leigh will head the jury at February's Berlinale. (This year's jury picked Oscar buzzing Iranian film A Separation as the best of the fest. Good luck topping that one!)

Finally, EW has released the first photo of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

I don't want to be bitchy about it since we've seen so little -- the trailer hits next week -- but doesn't it seem like revisionist fairy tale revisions and dark leathery bad-ass costuming are getting a little, shall we say, generic these days? How will this distinguish itself?

And when will Jeremy Renner star in a drama again after all this time spent Bourne Avenging Impossible Missions With Witch Hunters ? Does he want to be Samuel L Jackson that badly? Seems like a waster after his dramatic brilliance in The Hurt Locker.

100% share your Renner worries.

Samuel L. Jackson at least looks as if he belongs into action-orientated movies. But that short man with the cute babyface, big eyes, and an even bigger nose?
Nevertheless, I assume that Renner in the usual Hollywood blockbuster stuff might be much more fun than Jeremy Renner trying to impersonate The King of Cool. Renner as Steve McQueen. That's role-blind casting at it's best, particularly since Daniel Craig should be available.

Oops: at its best. Some people need to edit.

Seems Renner went a little crazy with the fame and his agent indulged every minute of it. Three big franchise roles in one year (four if you count obvious franchise wannabe Hansel and Gretel)? The guy's going to wear out his welcome.

"Watching Melancholia is like listening to a radio play that was originally written in Swedish, then translated into German, and finally into English. In the dark. With a stranger who won’t stop weeping and touching your leg. In a room that smells like cigars."

LOL

I think sometimes you gotta go through a phase where you take some "movie star roles". It helps you to say relevant. You gotta branch out of the indie world sometimes. Just ask Edward Norton!

Jeremy Renner on a supermarket sweep mad dash for cash. I bet it's temporary, b/c he has the excuse of so many lean years, and he came in big-time for The Town, right? But it's not always temporary w/ some of these folks, is it?

Hansel and Gretel the Witch Hunters? WTF? have these people not read the original tale - written, or handed down orally no doubt, during a time when child abandonment was quite common due to poverty. There's parental abandonment, there's abuse and imprisonment, the threat of cannibalism, there's the sibling bond, it's quite a dark tale (made darker by the fact that these are very YOUNG children having to find a way to protect themselves in a very violent and cruel world). PUH-LEASE. Why not just give the thing a different name and let it be it's own entity and be done with it?

Agreed on Renner, though I think it's understandable that after all those years without electricity, he wants to cash in as long as he's young enough. It's just a phase...
I saw the "hansel & gretel"-trailer btw.looks like this will be the trashiest movie of 2012. in the best case scenario, it'll be a terribly guilty pleasure. let's hope famke janssen saves the day!

Talking about fairy tales revisions, there's this gallery with Spanish actors as classic fairy tale characters:
