I've said it before and I'll say it again: Joe Wright captures beauty in a bottle, and then makes movies about bottles.
Jennifer Ehle was better :)
I have seen the BBC version after Joe Wright's adaption, and while Colin Firth is Colin Firth is Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle had no appeal at all for me.
thanks for the picture - reminder: Time to see the movie again
Don't get me wrong, Keira Knightley was lovely, but overall I just prefer the BBC adaptation and Ehle. Maybe because I saw it before the film had something to do with it....
i still have never seen the BBC. i used to not get the fuss over colin firth at all. although he has done pretty well by himself lately, huh?
love jennifer ehle so i suppose i shouldd
Loved that movie.
Pike is #1 on my list of people I wish were bigger stars; she always ends up as the 2nd female lead to some other rising actress (Keira, Carey, even Sally Hawkins).
I feel like this film does not get proper credit for being so brilliant, just because there have been a few other adaptations. For my money, this is the best Jane Austin adaptation (though I love 'Sense and Sensibility' - never cared for the Firth miniseries) if only based on all the wonderful performances. Everyone is so good, but that scene in the final moments between Knightley and Sutherland... GAH!
(This post cheered me up)
Kiera on the swing = golden. I need to rewatch this too, particularly now that I know who Rosamund Pike and Carey Mulligan are. They're my favorite actresses from 2010 and 2009, respectively.
LOVE. THIS. MOVIE. For all the people who doubt Keira's acting talents, they need to turn to this performance. So, so good. Just as good as Carey Mulligan in An Education, Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married, Michelle Williams in Brokeback Mountain, etc. Incredibly lovely, effortless, and natural. She literally glows in P&P.
This never fails to put an idiotic grin on my face at the end. Exuberant adaptations rarely get any better than this.
I've never seen the BBC version, but this film is just lovely! Maybe I'm biased because I actually adore Keira Knightley, but I thought she was brilliant.
I have to say, after reading the actual book for English class, I thought this film was kind of awful. It was beautiful-looking and charming but I thought it missed the point of the novel. I do prefer Keira Knightley and Rosamund Pike though. But the original Mr and Mrs Bennet are in my opinion closer to the book than Sutherland and Blethyn's adaptation. Although, the BBC was closer to the book than this novel.
So is anyone else like me, constantly firing up the gazebo scene on YouTube just for kicks? And I always love, LOVE, LOVE seeing Rosamund Pike's expression when she realizes Bingley adores her. I'm with you, James C. This is an underrated adaptation, and I don't care if it's blasphemy to say it, but I've always liked it more than the BBC production.
The Firth/Ehle adaptation was brilliant. Keira's version was ghastly. Everyone miscast, especially Sutherland as the father.
Had a big grin on my face when Ehle showed up in Gwyneth Paltrow's Possession.
I enjoyed this version but I disliked Keira as Lizzie. I recently recorded this after it aired on E! and have watched it twice. I have zero idea how Keira got so many nominations for this. There are scenes that had me cringing, like her too-modern and fake reactions (her 'disbelieving' laugh when first seeing Pemberley, her mocking Collins' during his first night with the family) or the scene when Darcy gives her the letter explaining his actions and she's just staaaaaaring. Lord.
On the upside: Pike is beautiful as Jane and Brenda Blethyn is amazingly annoying in a wonderful way (as opposed to an unpleasant way like Jena Malone).
