Box Office: The Source of that Insidious Hopping
Fact #1: I love Easter, bunnies, Easter bunnies, chocolate bunnies, coloring eggs.
Fact #2: Seeing Hop would ruin the upcoming holiday entirely for me because nothing makes me gag harder than animated CGI characters doing hip anachronistic things like oh, I don't know dreaming of playing in a rock n roll band. Just typing this out gave me salmonella. Mainstream moviegoers felt otherwise throwing their hardearned cash at the British wabbit. It had the best opening weekend since Rango. Where were these crowds when The Rock was doing Tooth Fairy?
01. HOP $37.5 new
02. SOURCE CODE $14.8 new
03. INSIDIOUS $13.2 new
04. DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES $10.0 (cumulative: $38.1)
05. LIMITLESS $9.3 (cumulative: $55.5)
Hop's success frightens me and the only possible joy that can come from it is that maybe someone will give James Marsden another plum comic gig like the one in Enchanted. I would however totally want to see this week's chart topper if it were about Jake Gyllenhaal and the Easter Bunny ibeing thrust back in time repeatedly until they saved Patrick Wilson from demonic possessions in The Source of That Insidious Hopping. Don't you wish you could sometimes watch three movies at once?
Per Screen Average Which movies were you most likely to find crowds at? I've eliminated all the specialty IMAX stuff and everything that's only at one theater because "come on" and here's what'cha got.
01. HOP $10,000ish
02. IN A BETTER WORLD $8,000ish (The Danish Oscar winner is finally on a few screens. Weird to wait an entire month post Oscar win to debut.)
03. WIN WIN $7,000ish (cumulative $1.9 million. Big jump in screen count this past weekend. I almost went today but my friend shifted plans.)
04. JANE EYRE $6,700ish (cumulative $3.4 million. Still going strong. Yay)
05. INSIDIOUS $5,500ish (and this type of movie is always better with a crowd)
What did you see over the weekend? I was entertaining so I didn't get out. Although we did watch the SXSW winner Weekend which was fairly strong as indies go. It definitely knew what it wanted to be and didn't get distracted at being that and that's always a huge plus.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE CROWDS WERE DOING!!!
IF YA SMELLLLALALALALAL WHAT THE ROCK . . . IS COOKIN
Lmao. It's funny that he's starting to go back to wrestling now. I guess he realized that his movie career is kind of tanking, which is too bad because he could be a pretty good actor (being the Tooth Fairy didn't help matters, though).
Anyway, I saw Source Code on Friday. It was a pretty solid film. It doesn't have great depth but it does work on a emotional level and the science of the film makes sense. The only bad thing about the film was Jeffrey Wright's overacting. It felt like he was in a completely different film! I'll say this, though: I found it more enjoyable than Moon.
I respect Moon for what Duncan accomplished with such a small budget - as well as for Rockwell's strong acting work - but as a film, I just didn't find it all that interesting.
@Daniel A: I completely agree with you regarding "Source Code" on all fronts. What was Jeffrey Wright doing? That said, I thoroughly endorse Jake G. as a leading man, as he is always so consistent.
I went to see Source Code. For me it was a bit disappointing because I knew at once who the terrorist was and i did not particularly liked the premise on which the movie rested (accessing someone's conscience once he/she has died). But it has very strong acting (specially for me Vera Farmiga).
I went to go see 'Win Win', I enjoyed it. It was a nice, gentle movie. Very humane view of all the characters - and a great supporting cast (Bobby Canavale, Jeffrey Tambor, Burt Young, Melanie Lynskey).
Saw Source Code. For me it's the first movie to fully appreciate and exploit Gylenhaal's skills as a leading man (which are very specific and, for me, limited) since Zodiac. The rest of the cast is good too. Agreed with the above comments about Wright, though he reminded me a little of Walter Bishop from Fringe, and squinting my eyes so I saw John Noble rather than Jeffrey Wright got me through those scenes ok.
Looking back over this year's films so far, I'm really happy to see the B-level studio-ish entertainment thriving thus far - from The Mechanic and Unknown to The Lincoln Lawyer, Limitless, and now Source Code. These are the kind of unpretentious mid-level thrillers that have been a dying breed over the last few years. Very happy to see them making a comeback (not that the comeback started this year, but it seems like these movies are starting to rev back up as commercial prospects, whereas a few years ago most of these movies would've been first weekend flops).
I saw Insidious and Sucker Punch over the weekend. Insidious was a fun experience because I was in a crowded, screaming theater. Sucker Punch (a movie I was dragged to) made me realize that I still hate Zack Snyder.
I saw Insidious in a crowded theater as well, and that's the only way to enjoy such a movie. Definitely a crowd experience. I absolutely loved it--to think it was produced for such a small budget is astonishing. It gave me faith in the horror genre again.
I saw Source Code and actually found it a really intriguing and satisfying sci-fi film. Jones really excelled in making the time travels fresh and emotionally resonant. Jake and Michelle Monaghan were great and had terrific chemistry and Vera Farmiga was as usual immensely compelling and completely natural on screen. I do agree that Jeffrey Wright was so over the top. It's like the filmmakers took his unused footage from the cutting room floor of The Invasion and stuck it in this film. Tres bizarre.

not a movie , but we watched the HBO mini :MIldred Pierce" what a dreadful adaptation ... the acting, writing are less than average. Winslet is totally miscast and cannot keep her accent quite right ( why did they not use an American actress ) that's what they are saying about Streep doing Thatcher!!!! Melissa Leo is reading her lines ... the little girl playing Veda is Horrific ... Rachel Evan Wood has not entered into the series yet... hope she is better at playing Veda that the 12 year old.
Also, there was no need to drag this movie on for 5 hours... the 3 parts dragged.
