Gay Marriage Equality In New York

This is one of the nights, a history maker, as New York legalized same sex marriage. It's a win-win for everyone... it's just that some people don't know it yet. Eventually they'll make movies about this and everyone will watch and think "Duh! Of course" and imagine themselves fighting the good fight with the protagonists and shake their heads at the small minded antagonists. Ah, those "safely in the past" message movies. But it's all part of the predictable beauty of social progress. Eventually everyone ends up on the same side (which is why one should always cross first and help with the bridge building.)

In the past decade of the movies, we've seen some beautiful transformative and realistic depictions of gay love onscreen. We love to dream about fictional couples here at the Film Experience but the beauty of what's happened tonight in New York is what it will mean for the dreams of real couples, just living their lives together day in and day out.

Much love to all. Happy Pride Weekend!

P.S. The Empire State Building is rainbow tonight -- previously scheduled for Pride but I can't see it due to all the fog. Here's a photo. Sunday's parade is going to be insane.

So proud to be a New Yorker tonight!

Long live NYC! Congratulations and Welcome!
I´m experiencing all over again the same joy, hope, pride and happiness I felt in July last year when equal marriage rights where approved here in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Now is when words like society and community make fully sense. Law is protecting us.
I know that you´ve heard this before, in corny movies or in silly love songs but here I go again: dreams do come true!

Congrats to everyone in New York! This is huge! We here in Canada have been rooting for you guys and I'm thrilled that it happened. It makes my wedding this Sunday all the sweeter.

God knows all and when He speaks, its to generations and the road map for society. Homosexuality is contrary to LOVE. LOVE is pure and it desires the best for that person. LOVE and lust are opposites. GOD is LOVE and lust is a perverted desire for something that is contrary to purity.

GOD intention is for man to live and not die through relationship and multiplication! Homosexuality is unfruitful and purposeless. If you had the last four persons on earth two males and two females, and the two males mated and the two females mated mankind will die. That example clearly shows that homosexuality is not right/purposeful!

jp I speak for everyone when I say you ought to leave this site now calmly.

I live in California and I know what NY just did will effect all of American society for the rest of our lives. I wish I could hug you Nate. Since I don't drink any lquid sugar or milk -- I wish I had a lemmon to go with my water tonight.

My heart is so full, I cannot even bother to care about any negative comments!

And Nate, what a lovely tribute! I sighed when I saw those photos, esp Jules and Nic! Aww, they'd be so joyous about this.

I'm very pleased and I decided to regard this as a tribute from NY to Elizabeth Taylor.
NY is for many people the centre of the world so I hope the change will spread across the globe :)

James T -- that's an awesome way to look at it. Liz didn't have to earn wins in heaven (i'm sure a spectacular diamond encrusted pair were waiting) but one imagines that her halo is growing brighter now.!

Congratulations, New York!

As someone who just committed to move to New York for the next four-seven years, I could not be more excited. Happy Pride to all.

So Nathaniel... when's the wedding? Are we all invited?

(And can anyone tell me what movie that is in the collage with BBM, TKAAR, and Milk?)

June 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

Evan -- that's Yossi & Jagger. a really good little Israeli movie.

"If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere...."

Most likely not the intention the writer orginally had, but let's believe it refers to this and that it is possible.

(sorry if someone has already used it)

I'm praying for NY and all those who don't know the truth about the spirit of homosexuality. Its foundation is the spirit of pride and a disregard for mankind. Submit yourself to God and resist the devil and he will flee. JP

June 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMeghan

Congrats New York! You made it one step closer to equality.

June 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCity_Of_Lights

We in Chicago and Illinois passed civil union equality this past year through our state legislature -- one of only a handful of states to do so through the legislature branch rather than court-ordered marriage change. We salute you, New York, our friend and friendly rival. I ♥ NY!

June 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I'm going to run out and marry a woman. Volunteers?

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Lipp

Only a few people are batting an eye here in Canada, as if gay marriage has been natural for the longest time. Hoping the New York decision/legislation will help bring this equality across the board. Congrats, guys!

Also, It's really sad that I don't know the movie at the bottom right corner.

Paolo -- it's a good one. it's called Yossi & Jagger
