Oscar Nominations for 2011 (2012 Ceremony)

We've finally arrived. So many shockers this year in the nominations including nine best pictures. Most people assumed, given the complicated math required to become a Best Picture nominee, that the number would be closer to five than ten. A nine nominee total indicates that there wasn't a ton of consensus. Lots of pictures had passionate bases.
Things I was right off the top of my head: If Mara made it she would bump out Tilda. I got Moneyball exactly right in each category. Supporting Actress perfect score. Chico & Rita for animated film!
Things I was wrong about off the top of my head: I overestimated the nomination tally of The Help and underestimated War Horse, Dragon Tattoo and Extremely Loud (but then didn't everyone?).

When they put up the pic of Chastain from The Tree of Life, I thought, "Ooooh." But then, nada.
Anyway, I'm glad Mara slipped in--I was sick of how predictable Best Actress was turning out. But it's a shame it was at the expense of Tilda and not Glenn.
Extremely happy for The Tree of Life's two big noms, Gary Oldman, A Separation's screenplay nod, and the actually surprising animation field.
Sad for Tilda, Fassbender, Brooks, but at least we got some surprises.
Drive got 1 technical!
Albert Brooks was good, but really that performance was just ok in my opinion, other actors have done that type of character much better in the past. It's a surprise he's not in given the predictions, but not a massive one. Jonah Hill was great in Moneyball.

I have to say, for the first time watching the nominations read live, it was a pretty thrilling experience. Although I was disappointed with a few of the surprises, at least it keeps things interesting and exciting. The biggest disappointment for me though, has to be the fact that Shailene Woodley missed out on a nomination. I really enjoyed the Descendants, and Woodley was by far the best part about the movie. The underwater scream still stays in my mind as a lasting image. However, I had a feeling this was coming. She's the Mila Kunis of this year.
The nominations that made me the most happy was to see Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig recognized for their hilarious work on Bridesmaids. It's great to see a movie like Bridesmaids do so well commercially and in the awards season. Here's to hoping Kristen Wiig gets to keep making great movies!
Am I the only one that got slightly confused when they used Chastain's image from 'The Tree if Life' even though she's nominated for 'The Help'? For a couple of seconds I didn't know whether to believe my eyes or my ears!
Brad Pitt, please win the Oscar on February 26!!!

Bad nominations or WORST nominations? This obsession with Stephen Daldry films has got to end, seriously. This is like last year on steroids, every feel good, schlocky picture they could possibly nominate, they did.
Also, when did taking a dump in a sink make you worthy of a best supporting nod?
Well, Tintin got in for Original Score, so not a complete snub?
And did Transformers 3 really get the same number of nominations as Deathly Hallows?
I'm happy Malick got in but I wish they'd kicked Jonah Hill from the Supporting Actor and gone 100% old man. And Gary Oldman! I thought Tinker Tailor woulkd be stronger in the crafts- no Art Direction?!

@Kyle, I would rather they start giving comedic performances some recognition, comedy is very hard to pull off and its hardly ever recognized, so I am ok with McCarthy getting in for this.

nat I assume you're pleased that A Separation also snagged Best Original Screenplay even if it didn't get the Best Pic award you were hoping for.
Replace Clooney with Fassbender and I'd be happy to see any of those guys go home with the Oscar. Only two nominees for best song should make for a shorter cermony, hopefully.
Proof that there is no stopping John Williams, even though he won't win for either film. This is also the first time I've missed seeing a Best Picture nominee prior to the announcement since Letters from Iwo Jima. I guess I'll be seeing Extremely Loud this weekend.

The nine BP nominees thing is very interesting. Evidently Academy voters are generous with their #1s, and if we can get 9 in a year like this I think it should be achievable most years.
Clear sailing for Christopher Plummer.
No one seems to have noticed that THE HELP was snubbed for Adapted Screenplay! Isn't that huge? That's the second biggest shocker after Extremely Loud's Best Picture nomination. It shows that support for THE HELP is weaker than we all thought. In fact outside of the acting categories, THE HELP received no other nominations than Best Picture.
Surprised Glenn Close and Mary J Blige didn't get in for Best Song. So weird.
Also Oscar's official website is funky. It only lists four nominations for Art Direction, forgetting Midnight in Paris (that film's total is 4 nominations as a result, not 3).

@ramification - I'm sure "screenplay" is a "safe" catagory, but I was also glad to see the love for Kristen Wiig's "Bridesmaids" screenplay. (How many graduates of SNL have the words "Oscar nominee" next to their names? Does Bill Murray even have that, for at least one of his amazing performances? I forget.) It'd be nice to see Wiig continuing to do more major work (her turn in Rollerball was very memorable and one of my favorite things about that movie, so underplayed).
Hopefully Rooney Mara can start cracking a smile now. Seriously, has there been a more miserable presence on the red carpet in the last few years?

Janice - Bill Murray was nominated (and should have won) for Lost In Translation. Eddie Murphy is the other SNL alum that comes to mind right away that is part of the club.

Yes, I saw the movie, it was cute at best. The performance was no better than say...Zach Galifinakis in the Hangover. Comedy should be awarded, but only if its warranted. We're not exactly talking about Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein here.
Joan Cusack and Dan Aykroyd are also SNL alumni that have Oscar nominations.
Well, you called it with the Fassbender snub (though, just like in the live chat last Sunday, I'm still not very pleased about it). However, it's partly made up to me by the fact that Tree of Life got three big nominations, and A Separation got the screenplay nod! I mean, hey, knowing the academy, it won't win, but at least it's been recognized for being the phenomenal screenplay that it is. I was also hoping for it to take a Best Picture spot, but hey, this is better than nothing!

(And Murray definitely deserved that nom. He probably should have been nommed Best Supporting for The Royal Tennebaums, IMO. Too bad he seems to have retired from acting? He had such a fantastic run for a while.)

I don't know whether to be happy or sad with these nominations. Loved the surprises, but really upset that Drive only got 1. And I know I was getting my hopes up with Melancholia but it's still a bummer to not see it get any.
Most Disgusting Snub goes to Jonah Hill in replacement of Albert Brooks. Totally just absurd. Jonah Hill? Over a phonemenal actor in an even better film? I can't continue typing or I will just throw my computer against the wall.
Best Actress looks nice! Best Actor is still missing Gosling. He gets the award in my eyes.

I knew the Descendants would get lots of love I don't share. Shocked about Extremely Loud and Von Sydow, but pleased to know the Oscars can still surprise me.
