Kim Stanley. Her last scene in Seance on a Wet Afternoon is the most powerful screen acting I have ever witnessed,

Nathaniel (and others) - just wondering if you've heard of the 20/20 Awards. They're another (relatively) new awards group, whose gimmick is that they revisit the Academy Awards 20 years later and 'reevaluate' the choices.
So they just 'reawarded' the 1991 Oscars (anyone who has their name in the main credits sequence of a movie released through a third party can become a member) - I think it's a fascinating concept.

You can check it out here if you're interested: http://www.2020awards.org/index.php

Hoping my cousin's wedding reception 100ish miles away finishes early so I can have a double bill of Une Femme Douce and Castle in the Sky.

I'm hearing way too many good things about John Carter. Are the ads just being deceitful?!?!

I've been thinking a lot about Penelope Cruz. I used to despise her as an actress (Vanilla Sky, Blow, etc. -- you can't blame me) but her recent work has been so wonderful and I love returning to it. But I'm worried that if not under the direction of great auteurs like Allen and Almodovar her work will go back to being lackluster. I absolutely loved her performance in Elegy and while Nine was a fun part it was essentially a lesser version of her work in Vicky Cristina. I hope for great things for her and I want her to succeed but I'm nervous. Do you think her future is promising? Rob Marshall seems like a nice enough guy but really, Pirates 4? Good paycheck I bet but not worth your time. Really disappointed she missed out on working with Von Trier.

Josh - I immediately checked out the 20/20 project, amazing. Love it. It's intriguing both for the the revisions and the glaring omissions from original nominees. Can't wait to see next year!

My cinematic mind is still drifting through the beautiful imagery of Tree of Life, which I finally saw this past week, and still deciding how I actually feel about it as a film.

I am also going to watch Zulawski's Possession for the first time this weekend. Can't wait!

Planning to see the new Frieda Pinto movie, Trishna for aesthetics pleasure alone. Gorgeous scenery, wondeful music and even more beautiful stars. Riz Ahmed looks like such a dreamcake. So happy to see him in more varied roles and heres hoping we'll be seeing more of him after his win European Shooting Star Award in Berlin.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND THE MAKING OF "PSYCHO"': Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock, Helen Mirren as Alma Reville, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh and James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins

It sounds like one of the most interesting projects for 2013

Ewan MGregor via Chelsea Handler.

I was watching an interview with Julianne Moore on Chelsea Lately and Moore told her something about why she doesn't like redheads, and she replied that she only doesn't like red headed men. I didn't like her that much - I find she speaks too loud to say nothing really interesting or funny- but then, saying you don't like redheaded men to Moore... So, McGregor came to my mind, how can you not like McGregor? I did a video search and I found a video where he talks about gayness, after watching a video where some comedian says he would go gay for him. So now I love him even more.

Also, saw Hugo and I was underwhelmed though not as much as other people. It reminded me why I don't like child actors. Not that they were bad, but carrying an entire movie is not an easy task. I must say that I had in mind some reader's comment (sorry I don't remember who it was) about Chloe Moretz being a demon child, and having that in mind it made her performance more enjoyable. It was also amusing to notice that this is the second time in a row that Ben Kingsley "has to" solve the third act of a Scorsese movie after Shutter Island.

And now I realize I would be a terrible film editor, my comments are way too long.

If Liza Minelli is in the Arrested Development movie, and the part is big enough, it would be a hoot - an absolute hoot - to see her nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

I know this is thought is not very cinematic, but will Nathaniel review Game Change?

I have no faith for the Best Actress category. I'll invest all my hopes into veteran Oscar(less) actresses. This year Supporting Actress could have Jessica Lange (The Vow) I haven't seen the movie but her one scene is suppose to be a big deal. There's Annette Bening playing a comedic trashy mom in Imogene. I don't know anything about the Laura Dern character in The Master but Harvey The Devil is behind the picture, so a best supporting nod for Dern isn't out of the question. Michelle Pfeiffer could receive Golden Globe and BAFTA traction?

Lange, Bening, Dern, Pfeiffer from off the top of my head for Supporting Actress this year.

The post on this blog a couple of days ago made me realize I wanted to read The Hunger Games before the movie came out. I just finished it, and liked it, and now I am really excited to see the movie. I hope it's good. I am realizing that one reason I like to read a book first if I can is because if the book is good, I start to want to see the movie for the story and can forget how heavily hyped it is.

I'm in the mood to watch a great ensemble film (with a bit of comedy) I've never seen before like Gosford Park, Love Actually, Grand Hotel, Pulp Fiction, or the Seven Samurai. Any ideas for movies like this made in the last 5 years that are actually good?

BTW--Ewan McGregor never ages. I can't wait to see Salmon Fishing on the Yemen just to get more of his adorable-ness. Loved loved loved Beginners.

So I rewatched The Black Dahlia for the first time since it came out and good God oh mighty...Mia Kirshner was really snubbed, wasn't she? I realize the film is a wreck, but she's the saving grace for it, doesn't she deserve some credit?

I am thinking that they should break the rules, and re-submit Tilda Swinton's work in "We Need to Talk About Kevin," sort of like the way the Baseball Hall of Fame works. You know, keep submitting her until she gets enough votes for a nomination.

Count 'em....3 straight years of not getting a nomination for Best Actress.

Harvey Weinstein, please pick up the next great Tilda movie.

I often wonder how the actors/writers felt about the implementation of the Hayes Code. Watching a film like Design for Living or Island of Lost Souls (one year before the start of the Code, and both would've been neutered beyond belief) I'm staggered at just how amazing and adult ths films actually are. Design for Living's position: wedded solidity loses out to a threeway with two artists (seriously). In 1933.

I saw Bell, Book and Candle for the first time in years - James Stewart and Kim Novak are in completely different movies and Elsa Lancaster and Jack Lemmon completely stole the show but I still walked away happy, with my cinematic love for NYC in the 50's rekindled.
