Yes, No, Maybe So: "Hope Springs"

I'm such a ditz. Last week we learned that Meryl Streep really needed more potassium in her diet -- the marketing for her new comedy Hope Springs is obsessed with those bananas -- and perhaps because of my love-hate relationship with those yellow phallic symbols, I completely forgot to post this particular Yes No Maybe So edition after writing it up.

Meryl's potassium deficiency.

Last week I also got a painful charley horse in my left calf and I ate bananas the rest of the week as penance. I think I have a super mild allergy because they always make my mouth feel weird.

PSA

YES

  • Who doesn't love Meryl Streep in comedies?
  • Am I crazy or does Steve Carell have one of the most soothing beautiful voices ever. I want him to talk at me and talk at me and tell me everything will be okay. I love how his big screen persona is so different than his small screen work.
  • Last time David Frankel and Streep worked together they gave us Miranda Priestley so we kinda owe them.
  • Meryl and the Signifying Banana.
  • OMG. Hi, Elisabeth Shue and Mimi Rogers. Meet you in 1987!!!

Great 80s Ladies: Elisabeth Shue, Meryl Streep, Mimi Rogers

MAYBE SO

  • The threesome joke that ends the trailer. I can't decide if it's hilarious in a dumb joke way or just groan-worthy. If all the jokes are cheeky ribbings this will be hard to swallow.

NO

  • The trailer isn't particularly funny and seems a little "you go girl" Lifetime bland.
  • Tommy Lee Jones? In this part?
  • Meryl Streep? With that hair? Seriously why.

Remember when we all first heard about this project and it sounded like a nuanced marital drama and it was going to star Jeff Bridges and I was pissed that Michelle Pfeiffer didn't fight Meryl for the role? This is not at all what I was expecting!

the trailer in question...

  • Are you a Yes No or Maybe So?
  • Ever practiced on a banana?
  • Is this way outside of your comfort zone?

It's a Meryl movie. Automatic yes. I mean golly, I sat through The Iron Lady for pete's sake.

I am so glad that I'm not the only one perturbed by the hair. I mean seriously what is going on there.
I so want this film to be amazing but I fear it will end up being very groan-worthy!!

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSimplySarah

I only hope it's not as awful as "It's Complicated" was! It might be, though....

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBill_the_Bear

I like the trailer. It looks funny and I am so watching this in August. Love Meryl Streep in anything.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndreas

I love Tommy Lee Jones.

I love Tommy Lee Jones going against-type!

I think his natural restraint will pay off big in a broad comedy.

I know this movie is going to be one more in the line of awfully mediocre movies starred by Streep, but TLJ makes this a Yes for me.

OUt of topic: your "Psycho" banner would have been better with this shot from Marion Cotillard

yay Elisabeth Shue!!!!!!!!

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIngrid

Of course - it's Meryl - but I'm not thrilled by the trailer. I do love Steve C but TLJ makes me worry a little. We'll see. And I sort of wish they'd decided to do something entirely different with her look in this movie. Really sort of middle america bland or something. I'm not sure that's right for the character but it would be fun to see Meryl with non-blonde hair again.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbillybil

The movie will probably be great fun ... give Streep a break... she does not have to be dazzling and Oscar-worthy in every movie she is in... let her have some fun for a change and don't analyze everything to death!!!!

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

Man, I miss Elizabeth Shue!

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdavid

I actually prefer seeing Meryl in something like this or It's Complicated. Say whatever you want about the movie, but it looked like Meryl was having fun loosening up for a change in It's Complicated and I enjoyed watching her, which is more than I can say for many of her recent nominated performances (for me, her last great nominated performance is The Devil Wears Prada). This movie doesn't really look that great, mostly because the trailer seemed a little forced to me, but I enjoy TLJ and Steve Carrell in just about everything they do, and it's Meryl Streep, so I'll give it a chance. However, I don't think we're going to get anything as memorable as Miranda Priestly this time around, because in that one I honestly feel the character was written to be memorable no matter who played her (though I don't think anyone could have played her the way Meryl did, she made her not just memorable, but legendary...). I don't see anything like that in this one.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRichter Scale

I agree with Rick...this looks like so much fun...I love the character Meryl is creating here...and the look works for the part.

BTW...oddly enough, Colin Firth and Minnie Driver were in a rom-com called Hope Springs back in the day.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSoSueMe

I love Meryl's look, including the hair. I'm in, but I do fear that the trailer reveals the whole movie. Looks very predictable.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

Totally watching this one. I'm still pissed that The Iron Lady hasn't still been released in my country yet. #thirdworldproblems

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRegina

I'm totaly going to see it, i mean it's Meryl Streep!

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPati

Who hates "It's Complicated" ? Come on... It is Meryl Streep, of course it is a good movie... So, why don't you watch the movie, and then, tell us if it's not good...(it wont be!) (:
Streeper. <3

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterZannella

Eh. After The Iron Lady I will take anything that doesn't scream Oscar!!!!! from Streep. And I even liked Mamma Mia, so there. In general, I loved Meryl Streep way much more in comedies than in the big glossy dramas and that includes - blasphemy! - Sophie's Choice. If I were the Academy I would've given Streep an Oscar for Death Becomes Her, Postcards from The Edge and The Devil Wears Prada --- and maybe Adaptation.
Seriously, can you not see how Douglas Sirk it is to see Meryl running up the hill with a scarf blowing in the wind and yelling on the soundtrack The Winner Taaaakessss It Alllllll?

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteradelutza

Zanella,

What do you mean by (it won't be) after viewing "It's Complicated?" It won't be good or it won't be bad? Confused.

Thanks

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermed

Meryl deserves a break even if it is a bland comedy to gear up for a blockbuster performance in August: Osage County which start filming in the fall. Now that will be something to behold...

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermed

I just love the fact that only Streep would wear that bad hair. Too many other actresses are too vain.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I love how people are like "Give Streep a break!!! Don't overanalyze!!!"

Uh, are you new here? This is done for every movie trailer posted, with all elements taken into account.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermarpa

All I can say is Meryl Streep knows her audience. This movie will be a big hit.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

Good Lord, here we go again...

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCameo Brooch

I am honestly curious why everyone is gearing up for her performance in Osage County. What kind of role will she be playing in that film? All I knew is that it's based on winning stage play, but that's all.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMike

Meryl Streep = YES 100%
and then there's Steve Carell who I also enjoy watching everytime so.... can't complaint, and the trailer is a yes for me as well, really liked the music they chose.

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarl

Nope. If I come across it on TNT in five years, I might wait a few minutes before changing the channel, but that's about all I can promise.

May 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRoark

I'm a Maybe So. She seems to be in her "light comedy mode" a la It's Complicated, which is fine, but not very interesting, for me.

But more importantly: I just don't get the connection banana-potassium. I mean, bananas don't have that much potassium. Look at this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana#Culture
Why is there this rumour?? Who started it?

May 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJames T

Mike

her role in august is oscar baity as hell, shes playing a deathly matriarch prostitute, and if she played it right(which she will) it will be very hard to beat comes oscar time.
Looking forward to her 4th oscar!

May 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlucy

OMG I got an AWFUL charley horse last week myself, in my right calf, and ate FAR too many bananas the next day.

Oh right, the trailer!

Looks a little too similar to It's Complicated for me. That said, I will probably see it if I get a hankering to go to the movies and there's nothing else playing. I like the cast a lot (especially Elisabeth Shue! Yay Elisabeth Shue!), so it feels like a safe option for light entertainment. I just wish that it didn't look so "safe".

May 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

You need to read the play, Mike. Streep's role as Violet Weston has the potential to be one for the record books. And Tracy Letts is a stellar playwright. You won't be disappointed.

Now back to the trailer.

Seems kind of lackluster to me, and I think Jeff Bridges would have brought some needed humor to the role that it doesn't look like Tommy Lee Jones is interested in doing. But I know, it's only a trailer. The film could be great. I'm not counting on it, but I do like that Steve Carell is in this. Miss him so much on "The Office" right now. I think I might finally give that show up next season.

A maybe to the trailer.

May 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSamson

I liked that other Meryl romcom. What the hell was it called? "It's Complicated." Yeah. Liked it but didn't love it enough to remember the name. This looks like that. Like, Netflix not theater.

May 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Lipp

NO.
Winced at this trailer; everything seems forced and so wrong. Don't get me started on Meryl's hair. And, David Frankel's last directing effort (The Big Year) went down in flames in a big bad way, despite a likeable cast.

Very much looking forward instead to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which also stars a bunch of talented 60+ year old thespians, whose characters also talk about sex and starting over. but looks way more engaging and real.

May 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Honestly I can't wait to see this movie, but we still don't know the release date in France! At first I was disappointed that Jeff Bridges wasn't in that movie, but TLJ is great; so I just wait and see.....
I like Miss Streep in comedy (after all one of my fave movie is POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE, and I'm retty sure this one will be a good one, after all do we watch a lot a romantic comedy with an "older" woman?? NO....
I'm 34 and I grew up with Queen M movies ,(I don't remember if I saw her first in Kramer vs. Kramer or Out Of Africa), and I'm really glad that I can still see her on screen!! Where is Misses Sarandon, Weaver, Thompson, Keaton, Close today (I saw a lot of movies too when I was younger, and I loved them all....)???? They are all talented but unfortunately their movies won't be released in France! And I'm glad that my fave actress is still working and making money..... So go Meryl, and please have fun whenever you want...... And I'm still overjoyed regarding this 3rd Oscar!! FINALLY.......... Woooohoooooooo !!!!!!!! (coz In France nobody knows Viola Davis, and a lot of critics, people were sure than Miss Streep will win her overdue Oscar..), and now I can' wait for OSAGE COUNTY, I'm pretty sure she will be a fanastic Violet.. She's Miss Streep........
