"Come to bed, Laura Brown"

Programming note: Actressexuals unite! We'll be celebrating The Hours 10th anniversary Friday, January 18th through the 22nd. We'll look back on its Globe winning night, it's Holy Trinity of Actresses and much more. (Suggestions welcome in the comments). Pass it on and join in the fun - we'll link up to any off-blog celebrations of this great film that week, too.

P.S. The Hours is available on Netflix Instant Watch making things much easier for discussions that week!

Obviously upset that hack Zeta-Jones has her statuette.

Awesome.

The Hours means so much to me. One of my favourite of all time. The three ladies are incomparable, the music, the editing... everything' s perfect.
Can't wait for the celebration. Let's get it started

Don't forget its trio of (true) supporting actresses: Toni Collette, Miranda Richardson. Eileen Atkins.

And one of my favorite one-scene roles ever by Jeff Daniels....

So excited for this!! This is my favorite film and Meryl Streep is my #1 actress!! CAN'T WAIT!!

It's not a BAD film, but the thing's not really THAT GREAT and I don't necessarily REGRET it being out of print.

Is there a sharper allegory to the precariousness of sisterhood than The Hours? I loved the book and surprisingly enjoyed the movie more than expected (such elliptical, delicate material to adapt). Laura Brown is so obviously a (co-)lead character though, so it's a shame the category fraud left no room for "Ingrid Magnussen." (Michelle Pfeiffer so-o-o deserved to win an Oscar that year.)

I am totally watching it on Netflix at this very moment (I think they just added it)! Very excited for next week and the chance to talk about this great (and rather unusual ) fiilm.

Amazing film. Never get tired of it. Love it so much

Aside from the main trio, I thought Miranda Richardson was terrific in this film, as well as 'Spider'.

always the years, always the love, always THE HOURS!!

Hi,discuss the 2002 actress fields lead and support or discuss toni colettes single scene wonder.

January 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMARK

Honestly, the dvd commentary with all three of the main actresses was a gift in itself.

@ 3rtful. I loved Julianne too, but i'd still give it to Zeta-Jones. She rocked that role SO HARD. "Hack"? let's not go there.

Can we please do a TFE readers' live tweet of the film? Set up a night for everyone to start watching it together and we'll tweet it out like one big happy family.

Perfect adaptation of a great book with the right director and the perfect cast. Got to mention Stephen Dillane.

PS Zeta-Jones can also be considered category fraud, can't she?

January 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

The only true "supporting" actresses in that category that year were Queen Latifah and Kathy Bates. Streep, Moore and Zeta-Jones were all lead performances. Too bad their placement in supporting prevented Collette and Richardson from getting in. Oh, well.

And the building where Ed Harris lived...full of personal memories!!!

January 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

Miranda Richardson and Toni Collette are the MVPs

January 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersolomon

I love this movie so much.
I can't believe it's not on Blu-Ray, it did very well at the b.o. for the film it was, and won a major Oscar. PUT IT OUT ON BLU-RAY.

January 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSean

Toni Collette was sensational in this!

January 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJosh

Toni Collette stole the film.

YaY for one of the greatest pictures of all time! Master study in acting, directing, writing, editing, composing! And what a cast!!!
Personally have watched it more than 10 times and every time I discover something new about the screenplay and the nuances of the directing.

That image you took of Julianne Moore is breaking my heart. Everything about her in this film is absolutely superlative.

January 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

Toni Collette gave one of the best performance I've ever seen in this. Showstopping, really.

Oscars aside, I loved Moore in this role (Great Moments in Movie Crying) and some parts of Kidman's performance (by no means her best work tho, I will always stand by that) but it's Streep's ultra-mannered fussy work I have a huge problem with - it rings completely false and soapy when it should be shattering and unnerving. Her and Ed Harris totally bring the film down for me, honestly.

I LOVE the beginning and the ending tho but we'll talk more when those posts come around, I guess. ;)
