Randomness: Wolverine and The Railway Bling Ring

Here's a collection of items that I couldn't be arsed* to talk about separately so I'm grouping them together. Join the conversation in the comments.

What is this?

It's the Pinoy poster for Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring. I hate the font and I have no idea why they've redressed Emma Watson in trashy whore drag (she does not wear this in the movie) but I love the idea of designer labels sharing billing with the stars. That's more than a little clever. Do you like? [Thanks to Ipe for bringing this to my attention]

Here's the latest promotional image from The Wolverine.

Post Man of Steel it is suddenly tremendously weird that Wolverine has less body hair than Superman, though he's still much veinier. Given my love for Hugh Jackman you'd think I'd be looking forward to this movie but it's literally the superhero movie of 2013 that I've thought the least about which I blame fully on the terribleness of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. If this one is only twice as good it will still be bad so they'd better step it way way up.

Remember that long stretch of time in 2012 when my podcast mates started claiming that I had made up the existence of Quartet with Maggie Smith? That the movie did not, in fact, exist. Well it finally opened proving me right and even though it was quite bad it was a minor hit (Maggie's renewed drawing power) but each year there's a movie like it that feels half imagined. Here's the latest promotional image from the stealth Railway Man which may or may not exist given its lack of distributor or release date and the full calendar of its stars.

I hate that hair on Nicole Kidman but given all the greatness she's delivered lately via ad campaigns, on red carpets, in The Paperboy and on my freaking telephone, we will follow her anywhere... yes, even into frumpy hair and possibly dull "supportive spouse" roles.

But were you able to follow her into Trespass? If I had to throw one movie from her filmography out of the airlock, that'd be the one.

Nicole looks like Marcia Gay Harden in that pic, but gawd, Colin Firth also NEEDS a good movie so I'm hoping for this one.

PS QUARTET wasn't awful but should have aired instead on PBS Sunday night while folks are waiting for the next season of Downton Abbey. It would reach and satisfy its target audience. Now, THE LONE RANGER was awful!!!!

I actually think Emma Watson did wear that (minus the coat) very briefly in the movie. There's a scene where they're selling purses and stuff at the beach, and she's in a beach chair drinking coffee, and I think that's what she's wearing. It leads me to believe the picture of her they're using on the poster is an on set photo taken by a papparazzi between takes?

In fact, that's exactly what it is: http://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/article-1334305482723-1292ab77000005dc-942509_466x661.jpg

ok so this is random, "déjà vu" & old news but I just think it's weird & WRONG that Geena Rowlands, Judy Davis & GLENN CLOSE are "Oscarless" when Hillary Swank as 2, Sally Field "Ditto" & mostly to my HORROR SANDRA FUCK$#@& Bullocks as one...

July 8, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

@stjeans yep, that really was random :P

Tresspass was a role Rene Russo or Madeleine Stowe used to play in the 90's/

Sofia Coppola is an Academy Award winning writer .......

Nat, did Quartet just open there? Here in Montréal, it opened back in January, and stayed around for months and months. (Actually, the second-run Dollar Cinéma is still playing it.) You're right; it wasn't all that good...and establishes firmly, in my opinion, that Dustin Hoffman has no business directing.

mark -- true that! we assume it was a favor Nicole was doing for a director who gave her an early key role.

bill -- it had an oscar qualifying release and then came out sometime in the early portino of the year and played for a long time too. did strong business for the arthouse

I don't mind that hair on Nicole. I don't mind anything on Nicole, though.

At first glance, I thought that Railway Man would be like Paradise Road, a movie about WWII in South East Asia, a topic that Australians strongly connect to, but American audiences just don't get.

But seeing the writers of the film, I'm intrigued. The writer wrote Welcome to Sarejevo, Tristam Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang sequels. I'm trying to wrap my head around what this war story would look like. My guess is that is will be a really interesting well-written story, that shows off its actors. So maybe this will be a solid supporting role for Kidman.

Kidman's role also got enlarged from the original novel, so hopefully it'll be a juicy wife role!

I don't think RAILWAY MAN will get a 2012 release. Given it's status as an Australia coproduction, I'd expect to see more press for it from local Australian media if it were less than 6 months away. They like to get excited about these sort of big star movies and this is the first still we've seen.

Nicole hopefully will have an interesting career in her 50's. but right now she is hotter off cinema than she is on it.

July 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHelen Sharp

Glenn - considering it's 2013, I don't think it will get a 2012 release either. ;)
