In retrospect it was very silly of me not to predict him. He's involved with like every movie and so so so talented.

winner:Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity
BEST ACTRESS
Presented by Daniel Day Lewis.
winner Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
BEST ACTOR
Presented by Jennifer Lawrence
winner: Matthew McConaughey thanks God, thanks his father who has passed, thanks himself. This is bizarre. He thanks himself for being his own hero.
BEST PICTURE
Presented by Will Smith
winner: 12 Years a Slave
THAT'S IT! Much more in the next 48 hours as we dig a little deeper. I scored 19/24 in my predictions which is not great because I missed a couple of obvious things (I had a hunch that there'd be an upset in foreign film - wrong! and I overthought Editing & Costumes) since I thought it would be a volatile night. I was wrong but I had a blast watching. I hope you had a great night, too.

Will Smith presenter of Best Picture?
I don't consider him on the same level as Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks or Sidney Poitier.
This was the only really disappointing segment of the entire show.
Other wise it was a good show.
And best of all the overrated American Hustle scored ZERO oscars.
par -- ME. HAHA. i did terrible.
Mark & Marcelo -- yeah, McConaughey. that was a strange speech but they always are. seems kinda weird to thank yourself as your own hero though.
This year got no supense of big upset. Best pic was not a suprise winner. Matt is an Oscar winner before Leo. That's the way the cookie crumbles.
nathaniel - yeah, but I don't really get the concept of "having a hero" (I don't have one at least). so a weird anecdote about how you didn't have one when someone asked, but you thought your future self could be it is just a (again weird) variation on the "be the best person you can be, always try to improve etc". I just don't get that this is something to get mad at. but maybe people were just rooting for leo, chiwetel...
Academy Award winner Brad Pitt. Wonderful.
The best ceremony since 2003… I love Ellen, she is so funny… and the show was amazing.
But… “Gravity” should win Best Picture.
Everybody's whining there were no surprises. Well, Get a Horse and Gravity for editing were surprises. I think Spike Jonze over David O. Russell for screenplay counts as a surprise. And up until the moment it was announced, you still didn't know whether Gravity or 12 Years was going to take the top prize, so they kept the suspense the whole way through. That's pretty good if you ask me.
@Shawshank, agreed, and if there was a surprise in any of the main categories, you know everyone would have been so mad. Say, Amy Adams won? Wow, can you even imagine the internet?
I didn't want any surprises. I had McQueen, Cuaron, Jonze, Lubezki, and Nyong'o walking out of her Oscar winners and they got all of 'em. Fuck the surprises. Crash beating Brokeback, SURPRISE!
So glad for 12 Years a Slave. I was worried as Gravity was winning and winning. 2 out of 3 of my Oscar wishes and 5 out of 6 of my favs. My only fav not to win was Leo.
It was a kinda strange buddy buddy sorta of evening with Ellen chillin' with her pals in the front 3 rows. Lupita's speech was amazing. She is wonderful graceful and gracious. The Best Original Song winners' speech was the most entertaining. Cate was brilliant as usual and we all have to keep reminding ourselves that this is her first Best Actress in a Leading Role. She actually didn't win for Elizabeth right? That year Gwyneth won for Shakespeare in Love. still shaking my head at that one.
Mathew Mc I just cant relate. I still haven't seen that movie. I dont think it's out in Australia yet? Leo followed closely by Chiwetel were my favs. Frozen's 2 wins will be popular in my household. My girls are just home from school and watching the recording fast forwarding through all the blah blah and ads.
And yay for my home girl Cathy Martin. Now the most Oscar honoured Australian in History!!!
I'm not going to hate on MM for winning (even though that speech was weird) because I felt he was extremely well suited to the role in DBC and I don't really see another role like that coming along for him that easily. All the others are far more versatile and will have more chances (even Dern) so if its on the cards for Matt to win, I'm glad it was for this.
Personally, I felt the show sucked until Pink. From there to the end it worked pretty well, but altogether it felt under rehearsed, under produced and thrown together. Most of the presenters sounded like they had never read the copy before. I mean, what are you thinking going out to introduce a singer and you can't even pronounce their name?
Just thinking about Matt Mc's speech. It's almost a parody of the self-centred Hollywood, back slapping, self congratulatory insular mentally that nights like to tonight are all about. It's kind of cool for us ordinary folk to watch as Ellen orders Pizza and tweets mega star group shots. But when one of them gets up and hero worships his future self (or something...) well that's just going a little too far.
But can we talk about Kim Novak for a minute? And Darlene Love's random church mother solo? And Whoopi Goldberg wearing a bed sheet? I loved all of these things.
Troy - oh we will talk about it all. but i'm sleeping first
I thought maybe for once there would be justice and Leonardo, would not get robbed again. Matthew was great but did not deserve the win. Other than that a good lineup.
To be honest, I thought it was a pretty dull show, but most of the winners worked out well for all involved. 12 Years is the film in the best position not to suffer any backlash from winning Best Picture; Cuaron is a very respectable choice for Best Director; Blanchett's win is unquestionably deserved; Lawrence and Russell were better off not winning for Supporting Actress and Screenplay, respectively. Russell will win an Oscar eventually, in a less contentious year, and Lawrence doesn't need a second.
I do wonder about Lupita's career prospects, though. Will the people who voted for her and gave her a standing ovation actually hire her? She has nothing on the horizon. And then there's McConaughey - 5 years from now he could be one of our most acclaimed film actors, but I also could see him turning into Nicolas Cage. His transformation was so rapid that there's really no telling what will happen with him.
My girls are watching Lupita's speech. Line of the night... "No matter where you're from, your dreams are valid". What a wonderful role model.
Not a single surprise! But still super happy for Her and 12 Years a Slave. Also super glad Lupita won. She was so happy.
And I can't get over how BAD Idina Menzel was. She was so pissed at the end of the song. She knew she fucked up.-
Okay Nate--- get busy on. April Fools oscar predix 2015. Yay...
don't forget the smackdown!
The highs: Darlene Love being fierce, Lupita Nyong'o sincere speech, Pharell's and Pink's performances, Cate Blanchett's speech, Kate Hudson's and Goldie Hawn's looks (I loved both their dresses, a shame they did not present together), the Chrises (Evans and Hemsworth) in tuxes, and 12YAS taking top honor (weee!).
The lows: Capt. Phillips going home empty handed, McConaughey's terrible speech, the idiots who produced the show passing on the MAJOR moment that would have been Poitier announcing Best Picture to 12YAS, all the terrible montages, and the Bette Middler number (redundant and her voice is shot).
The lolz: Travolta introducing Adele Azeem, who then proceeds to give the worst rendition of Let It Go ever (Demi Lovato fans have been vindicated, y'all!), Whoopi's hilarious outfit, J-Law falling yet again on the Red Carpet, Cate Blanchett's unexpected and mean yet superfunny zinger at Sandra Bullock's performance during her speech. Ellen had some great moments. Overall a fun show!
hmmm… what happened to andrew garfield? thought he was suppose to present.
BORING awards winner, but great show.
No thanks to the voters,
Greatest gratitude to the performers and especially ELLEN!
Adele Dazim has had me rolling on the floor laughing tonight. No joke. Me and my roommates laughed for an hour straight and watched it over and over. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Thanks, John Travolta.
I'm very happy for Lupita and 12 Years.
Matthew Mc's speech made me cringe so hard. Ew. What a gross guy. Completely turned me off from him.
Very glad for Lupita. She really deserved it. Ellen was a great host.
But I'm very disappointed about foreign film category. Definitely, The Broken Circle Breakdown and The Hunt were robbed, and I consider that The Great Beauty is the worst winner since No Man's Land and the worst italian winner since Mediterraneo in 1992. Very disappointed!
i think it was one of those rare shows where most of the entertainment came from the winners and the audience, (selfies, dancing, pizza, etc.) I loved Darlene Love breaking into song, songwriters for let it go doing a jingle, Leto and his Mother, and the fabulous Lupita & Cate speeches.
I was sorry for Kim Novak who botoxed her face into a complete frozen state, making her appearance the butt of jokes. Really awkward moment, instead of being a nice tribute to a legend.
I agree with others that Sidney Portier should have done best picture, not Will Smith (!!)
I think Ellen's main contribution was to turn make it all more like a slumber party, with the non-winners -Amy Adams, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, showing what great sports they are. I loved their dancing, and joking around. I still think the whole tribute to the wizard of oz was weird, and Pink doesn't do it for me, but John Travolta's mis pronounciation will go down as the worst lack of class-even more aggravating than Michael's speech.
Finally Amy Adams and Leo Dicaprio must wing next time!!!
Sweet... Spike Jonze won Best Original Screenplay for a film that seems to touch upon his marriage with Sofia Coppola... Phoenix saying about Rooney Mara and I'm paraphrasing from memory "We grew up together, she came from a family where nothing was good enough, We created an environment where she could play, and she got more and more confident..." and then she became a great filmmaker... that last one was mine. In the movie HER she becomes a succesful novelist...
Sofia Coppola won Best Original Screenplay exactly 10 years ago for a film that
was more than inspired by Spike and her's marriage (on the rocks)
Gotta say, it's a bit disappointing when the only real surprising upset was Mr Hublot beating Get a Horse! in my favorite category.
And as somebody that lives in McConaughey's old hometown of Longview, I gotta say that his speech just exuded that particular East Texas vibe. You can take the star out of Longview, but you can't take Longview out of the star.
oh boy. why not let judy's three kids intro that very nice segment w pink. and ellen was pretty awful making fun of liza - who clearly spent the evening in a state of confusion. John Travolta - a "major fan" of musicals and he's never heard of Idina Menzel? Adele Mahzeed - my favorite moment. WTF is Kate Hudson doing there and a bunch of other no-talent schlubbs. WTF has goldie hawn done to her face - she now looks like she did in the "fist wives club" w all the botox. sorry ellen - too much pictures 'n pizza.
Ellen was fine, but to call Liza a drag queen to her face was gross. She's lucky she is part of the community, because just imagine the reaction if that was sad by Seth MacFarlane.
Novak haters are gross. Bunch of Scottie Fergusons.
No surprising winners, just satisfying winners.
I am not into the Hustle shut-out snark, though. Amy and the costumes would've been fine winners at least.
#TeamSofia
WTF with that Oz tribute if you invited Judy's kids there. The best part of it was definitely Whoopi giving the tribute. Her descriptions and genuine personal feelings make many things an enjoyable listen.
Ridley and McQueen. A new development or were they just good at hiding this animosity? That all said, McQueen clicking his heels was a nice, unexpected moment.
Matthew and Jared's speeches were a mess.
Love Cate's speech on the industry of female-led movies though when she got to her fellow nominees, I sensed she only felt positive toward Adams and then padded on the other nominees. She seemed to just like Amy and then made an inside-joke about Julia Roberts (Did Cate also not buy that category fraud?). Anyway, would love if she and Adams are head to head again next year for Big Eyes and Carol.
Lupita was the best. So much elegance and gravitas.
Overall, a fine ceremony that could have been trimmed without dumb theme montages and the Oz tribute. Considering how poorly done those montages were, maybe avoiding 1939 as a whole was an altogether good decision.
Celebrating 1939 as a whole had to be avoided - there is no way the Acaademy would ever celebrate Gone With the Wind in the same year that 12 Years a Slave was up for best picture.
Hattie McDaniel's win was groundbreaking and well deserved but any clip of Mammy in the same show as a clip of Patsey could only cause somber reflection on how far the movie industry has come and how long it has taken.
