I can't believe how few people noticed Meryl literally screaming with delight after Viola's clip played. Few things warm my heart as much as seeing actresses fangirl over other actresses, and I love how crazy Meryl and Chastain (an ardent vocal supporter on social media and of other underrepresented actresses) are about Viola.
Wait, are the previous year's winners expected to hand out the respective prizes at EVERY major award show? I thought that was just an Oscar thing - and I was surprised to see the Dallas Buyers guys handing out actress awards at the Globes.
It seems a little silly for, say, Julianne Moore to receive her award from Matthew McConaughey every time.
I think Streep typically shows up for all these award shows, and some award presentations we've never heard of before. She did Gotham Awards this year plus she just presented Rob Marshall with an award (along with Tracey Ullman and Christine Baranski).
Philip- I agree there is a homegrown feel to the Arquette's performance- a grounding that maybe a more successful actress may not have been able to hide behind because she is so well known? But still - she is not reaching for the stars in her performance. A sweep? To me- the "homegrown" feel to her performance struck me as someone who did not really know how to act in front of a camera and uncomfortable. Much like her awards speeches have been.
It is tradition for last year's Best Actor to present to this year's Best Actress and vice versa. Dates way back and is gender switched to prevent last year's winner presenting to themselves (passing the crown so to speak). This wasn't so odd for many years when the Oscars were the only film awards televised but now, it seems that everyone is getting their awards on the tube so it does feel a little silly if you have a year where someone sweeps. I don't think anyone would care if they mixed it up, but you would still want last year's winner to show.
Arquette gave a performance that few would be able to match. Brilliant work.
We disagree once again Henry.
Arquette's acting style can be an acquired taste, but I felt she was perfect for this role and an anchor for the film. That said, I don't find her work in Boyhood extraordinary or particularly award-worthy. I appreciate her more as a human being than as an actress after seeing the film, but I wouldn't give her an Oscar for that.
For a long while, I thought I'm the only person (or among a handful) who feels that Arquette's work in Boyhood was not exactly worthy of all the awards she has been garnering. Don't get me wrong - she's completely believable in the role. It's just that I feel the various voting bodies have been too content (or lazy) to vote otherwise or better yet nominate other actresses apart from those in the final Oscar shortlist. I also feel the same way about Moore's performance in Still Alice. Much as I'm happy for her upcoming win, I don't think many will look back and say 'yeah,that was tour de force' but rather 'she won for her body of work'.
@Henry. If people like Blanchett and Day Lewis lived in LA, sure. But they don't. Expecting someone to hand over a prize (multiple times!) when it involves 20-30 hours on a plane each time is unreasonable. Especially when they have both young families and busy careers. Once, for the big one, is fine.
