Who Wore It Best? Todd Haynes Edition

For Carol Week, all I, Dancin' Dan, would like to talk about, is the men.

Well, the man. That would be Kyle Chandler as The Husband, Harge Aird.

He delivers wonderful supporting work that should be garnering awards attention. But all I've been thinking about since seeing him with his slicked-back hair and 50s-style tailored suits is.... well, another man.

THAT man would be Dennis Quaid, who played The Husband in Haynes's other 1950s melodrama masterpiece, Far From Heaven.

Quaid also delivered a wonderful supporting performance that should had gotten more awards attention, and he looked perhaps the best he has ever looked (quite a feat) in Sandy Powell's luxe costumes and era-appropriate slicked-back hair.

So with all that said, WHO WORE IT BEST?

Chandler is awful in his role as fat Alec Baldwin after the divorce.

Dennis Quaid is so freaking good in Far from Heaven - although I had to watch it a couple of times to appreciate him in it.
So although in nearly all elections I vote Kyle Chandker, here my vote is for Quaid.

/3rtful -- being toxic again are we? cheer up it's the holidays.

Mike -- oh man. it killed me that he wasn't nominated that year but at least he got some critics awards.

Denis Quaid wins. Perhaps his best role.

December 21, 2015 | Unregistered Commenteradelutza

Dennis Quaid was great in that role but I tend to favor Kyle Chandler.

December 21, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjoel6

Damn Kyle Chandler can STILL GET IT. Yes please.

December 21, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJase

Kyle Chandler for DAYS, darling.

December 21, 2015 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

Dennis Quaid was a great in that movie

December 21, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Why are both their ties askew?

December 21, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJames

Definitely Dennis Quaid. He really showed us something new in Far From Heaven. I like Kyle Chandler a lot. He was solid in Carol, but it really wasn't much of a role,

December 21, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I think Emmy Award winner Guy Pearce should have been in the running (in a tux at Veda's performance at the Philharmonic).

I'll marry Chandler, but I'll have an affair with Quaid. Then I'll switch. Fair?
But Quaid tho. Damn girl.

The worst part about Dennis Quaid's snub was that completely undeserved filler nomination for John C. Reilly in Chicago. Blech. (I'd also add Ed Harris but I know The Hours is popular around these parts)

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAkash

I love The Hours, I like Far From Heaven.

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Quaid but oh how i'd love to see Haynes do a '50's melodrama about THESE TWO as a secret couple. swoon

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commentereric LL

Dennis Quaid - how he wasn't nominated is still shocking. I don't understand how the Academy passed over him. Newman and Cooper were deserving, but Reilly and Harris were tag-a-long nominations, IMO.

Quaid

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy

Both are great performances in different ways. Quaid fro expertly handling the melodrama and Chandler for making a nice guy out of a character that could've easily been the big bulking villain. Haynes has a way with actors in every sense and to mention another name in relation to these two men in Brian F. O'Byrne's work in Mildred Pierce. While Pearce won just about every award for his work O'Byrne's work was more impressive to me.

Quaid by light years.
That man is gorgeous.
Chandler is somebody whose looks I've always been repulsed by.
And yes, Far From Heaven is a terrific movie. How wasn't Sandy Powell even nominated for it? I remember nearly each and every one of Julianne's costumes in the film and that scarf was sublime.

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterzooeybl

Quaid, because I love the movie and haven't seen Carol yet.

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

Haynes would have worked wonders with the beauty of pre 1956 Montgomery Clift.

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMary

You all are NOT helping! When it comes down to performance, Quaid wins hands down. But when it comes to who wore it best, it's a MUCH tougher call. I have always had a thing for Dennis Quaid, and DAMN if Far From heaven isn't the most swoon-worthy he's ever been, but I cannot deny that Kyle Chandler is just PERFECTION, looks-wise, in Carol. I CAN'T CHOOSE! I need your help! Who looks better?!?

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

Just watched "Far From Heaven" and "All That Heaven Allows" recently.

Quaid is a terrific actor but I found that he stuck out like a modern sore thumb opposite Moore's take on stylized '50s movie acting.

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterrick gould

Performance wise, Kyle Chandler was great but Dennis Quaid all the way. He also rocks that suit better.

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAFK

I'm stressing about this more than I did for my SATs

December 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJoey

zooey -- repulsed by? really? Kyle is so handsome... in an ideal everyman way.

December 22, 2015 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Hahaha. Yes, Nathaniel. I just can't look at him.
But this is not the important part.
What's important is Quaid's deliciousness.
