We Can't Wait! #14: Knight of Cups

Team Experience is counting down our 15 most anticipated for 2015. Here's Jose...

Who & What: Knight of Cups is The Terrence Malick Show ft. Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Freida Pinto, Antonio Banderas and Joel Kinnaman (and whoever else made it out of the cutting room). The story, as far as we can tell, involves a screenwriter (Christian Bale) and the temptations, celebrity and excess of Hollywood. The title comes from a story about a royal prince who drinks from a cup falls into a deep sleep, forgetting his mission and that he is the son of a king.  We've already discussed the trailer and here's the teaser poster...

Why We’re Excited About It: Remember a time when Terrence Malick took decade-long breaks between films? Suddenly after The Tree of Life he treated us to news that he would be making up to three new consecutive films within the next five years? This is why we're excited. The more Malick, the merrier..

What If It All Goes Wrong? What can go wrong in a film shot by Emmanuel Lubezki and featuring, wait for it, Fabio (!!!) among the credited cast? Well, they were filming it a full three years ago whatever that might mean. Malick isn't everyone's cup of tea and To the Wonder, was certainly divisive and if you have a low tolerance for wheat or allegories, you already know you're skipping this one.

When: December 11th. Does this mean Broad Green Pictures thinks it'll actually win Oscars?

I'll maybe wait for the download.

Earth to Jose. What's wrong with Fabio? He won a Slashie!

"This award means you think I am the best actor slash model, and not the other way around."

December? I thought this was coming out in April or May. Anyway, I'm 1 and 1 with Malick - Liked The New World, disliked Tree Of Life - but this looks sort of interesting, so I'll more than likely see it if I can.

I hated Tree of Life, so even if this gets good reviews like that one did, i'm skipping it. Just not my thing and am sad that three actors I like are involved in this instead of something else.

I'm a fool for Bale and Blanchett and the last/first time they were in the same movie, it was my favorite of that year and it's still in my top five of its decade. Nuff said. (And then there's Jungle Book: Origins...)

I don't miss Malick films. I'm there no matter what.

Got very very bad reviews in Berlin.

@ Peggy Sue, "got very very bad reviews" by whom?

Only 8 Metacritics have spoken out and it's a 58/100 score *apply elementary math here* => above average.

The December release is not surprising, the the 3 names on the poster not only share 4 Oscars between them but they've all won in the last 4 years or so.

Yeah, it's also a Malick film.

The least malick the merrier.

He is so much better working with long breaks!

Academy award winners Ben Kingsley and Holly Hunter appear not to have large roles in the film.

Yavor: 42% on 12 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. That's NOT promising. Really, really NOT promising. With that low a review count, the likelihood is it'll wind up with, at highest, 20-30%.

Jose! I almost spit out my tea when I read "low tolerance for wheat and allegories!" I love me some Malick but that description is... on point, shall we say.

YES... but dat release date tho ugh.

July would be perfect for something like this. They're just asking for trouble if it's even a mixed reaction because then it'll be considered an Oscar flop and that's the last thing I wanna hear when it comes to a Malick movie.

I proposed we create some actor bingo cards (going by the cast list) and see who actually makes the final cut. It'll be a riot! We can call it The Rachel Weisz Final Cut Bingo Challenge.
