WGA Nominations - Amy Schumer Twice Over and More...

Don't cry Sadness -- you weren't eligible. You can still dream of OscarOf the guild nominations each year the Writer's Guild, which should be the most fascinating to we writers, is often the least. That's no mark on their taste but on their guilds bizarre exclusionary practices. More than any other guild they eliminated many cherished films each year for "not a member" reasons. So it's worth noting that "snubs" are not ever snubs so much as "probably weren't eligible." situations. And when you really love a film that wasn't nominated you can just tell yourself that even if it isn't true. Why trouble yourself?

If you're just joining us, we previously interviewed Phyllis Nagy who is nominated today for her Patricia Highsmith adaptation Carol. We'll also be sharing an interview with the nominated screenwriter of Spotlight sometime soon. Amy Schumer is the big winner this year nominated for both TV and Film efforts. You can see the WGA nominees in 3 film categories, and 25 other categories (television/newmedia/radio) after the jump...

These awards are pulled directly from their site so I apologize fo the strange coding but today is too busy to recode for our purposes to make it prettier.

For the Oscars, I'm thinking Inside Out and Ex Machina instead of Trainwreck and Sicario in Original Screenplay (Tarantino gets snubbed in what I guess would be a mild surprise), and Room and Brooklyn instead of Steve Jobs and Trumbo in Adapted.

Brooklyn and Inside Out better show up at the Oscars. That is all.

Yay Carol! Phyllis Nagy better get that win here.

Yay Broad City! The second season was not as amazing as the first but this is definitely a nice encouragement for them. Where is season 3?!

I wouldn't say Straight Outta Compton (a movie that was problematic about that it decided to EXCLUDE) had one of the very best scripts of the year, even when you dismiss some of the ineligibles. Ditto Sicario.

Was kinda hoping that Steve Jobs script would be dismissed as the hollow Sorkin rehash it clearly is. Let's hope any of the ineligibles replace it at the Oscars.

Glad to see Bojack Horseman got a nod... but seriously, why are three Simpsons episodes nominated? The show is running on fume molecules and there were so many worthy animated series this year,

Tarantino is in for the Oscars. I think it's in the AMPAS rule book.

I still don't get Trainwreck, nor Amy Schumer. Maybe I'm not in the right demographic?

Yay for any nom for The Americans and Bob's Burgers.

The Carol comeback has commenced.

As much as I want it to be nominated and I'm happy to see it here, Carol's inclusion here doesn't really ease my mind. It feels like it was included because they couldn't incllude Brooklyn or Room, and let's not forget this is the one place that Carol has had trouble getting in everywhere else (it wasn't nominated for the Globe or the Critics Choice, or as someone mentioned the Chicago Film Critics, so I'm feeling that the screenplay is widely considere the film's weak spot, I disagree). I feel Steve Jobs is locked and loaded here to the chagrin of some people around here (I personally love that movie and am a little saddened that it won't be a Best Picture player, but I'm over it), so is The Big Short and The Martian, and we'll see if Brooklyn, or Room, or Carol wiggle into those last two spots (I seriously doubt Trumbo will be nominated at the Oscars, but I could be wrong).

January 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRichter Scale

Amy Schumer is nominated THREE times! For her movie, sketch series, and HBO special. YAY!

January 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Richter Scale - I agree (and I love Steve Jobs, too). I also think Anomalisa could sneak in - they love Charlie Kaufman, he's a three-time nominee (and previous winner, for Eternal Sunshine).

I didn't see Archer under animation, is it not eligible?
